Gotta Catch Up! [Tag: Loyalty/Elikos]

Very similar to the old lower caverns, these ones are a little less than before as well. These Lower Caverns almost exclusively hold storage rooms and living spaces for all the Weyrfolk.

Briefly, Elias expected the literal answer of, "I got here by dragon," but Elikos said more, mentioning Locke's name. Of course, Elias couldn't help but think, though not with malice, but of course somehow Locke was related to this. It seemed that his life often somehow went back to Locke, however minorly it did, but considering they had been in the same orphanage, then found themselves, completely unplanned, in the Weyr too, and now this boy.... this boy that looked so remarkable familiar, was under Locke's wing. He wondered if Locke saw the similarity? Perhaps not.

Then Elikos spoke more, admitting that he did in fact know a Markos, a man that had helped him, perhaps even saved his life. It was hard to not believe it was Markos then. The man who had managed to find Elias and get him out of trouble. It was hard not to wonder more then...

"Anything else ya wanna chatter on about?"

The kid, either way, was long since done with this conversation. He debated how to continue this interaction, but he knew perhaps it would be best to go to Locke soon. But more importantly to him, he needed to contact Markos soon. He wondered what Markos had been keeping to himself.

"I think I'm done, thank you. Take care of that little flitt, they're great lifelong companions." Here, he scratched the chin of one of his own girls. "Do you need help finding your way out?" He didn't know how long Elikos had been here, how familiar he was with the tunnels, probably very likely, but he'd still offer, not wanting to leave a lad alone and potentially lost.

Elikos had no idea what thoughts were going through Elias' head. He only knew what was finally said aloud and it made him snort with disgust and then roll his eyes. He wasn't lost. He was a rat. He prided himself on knowing his way around these dark places even if he'd only arrived at the weyr a short time ago. Sure he'd not explored even half of them yet but he had a solid map of this place or he'd not have come here when followed.

As for the comment about his flit... "I ain't a dimglow." He huffed quietly and squeezed past the man now that 'permission' was granted for him to go. Did he trust that permission? Nope. Did he try to snag the strange pendant again on his way by? Well... he wasn't going to let on if he did.

Stopping at the door, something stopped him and he turned back to take a long look at Elias. Something seemed a little off. He couldn't figure out what it was. Had it been a sound, a look, an instinct? With Itzy cradled in his arms he paused at the door and tried to figure out what it might have been.

He took all of the kid's behavior, the snort and eye roll and the "I ain't a dimglow," as signs that the kid was completely done with this conversation now, more so than he had been a few minutes earlier. He didn't think he could get any other information from him, not that he had anything else he felt he could ask him. The people that likely had the answers, or something close to answers, for the questions he now had were Markos and Locke. Why did his path keep crossing with Locke's even after so many turns since they were orphanage brothers?

He let the boy pass, stepping aside swiftly to let him go without him having to shove past him. He wouldn't blame the boy for his curtness, after all, the Bottoms didn't breed kind or polite children, he knew that as well despite his demeanor these days. He did however, keep a hand in his pocket on the pendant, knowing better than to trust a Bottoms pickpocket after he'd already swiped something from him once. The kid was new to the Weyr, clearly not adjusted yet, and likely clinging to old ways out of comfort and familiarity though he didn't need them anymore.

For a moment, as the kid passed him, Elias stood, running a hand over his hair and the back of his neck, rubbing it a moment with a small sigh as he thought to himself. He wasn't ready to let this go, though he let the boy walk away for now. But it weighed on him what Markos might have been keeping from him for who knows how many turns. Already he was starting to formulate what message he would send to Markos.

"Looks like you get to see Markos again soon little Nia," he said softly to the green flitt, scratching her chin before he moved and saw that Elikos was in the doorway, looking at him. He looked back at the boy, studying his features, his hair color, his eyes... Was he really seeing what he thought? Or was he just being hopeful? What was he hoping for anyway?

"Try and behave, ok? New Atricis is a much safer, more prosperous place than the Bottoms. There's better things you can do with those deft fingers of yours than stealing from pockets." He didn't think the kid would listen, but he could try to reiterate to the boy not to steal anymore. Now he made his own way to the door, hands in his pockets.

"I'll see you around, Elikos." He stepped out through the door, thinking. Elikos. Elias. Markos. It was all too similar, the names were so much the same, like his and Markos' names together, he couldn't let it go. He paused a moment, looking back to Elikos.

"You sure you don't know your parents?"

"Looks... see Markos ..."

When Elikos looked back at the man, he saw him talking to his pet. He couldn't make out all the words, but what he did hear sent his mind bouncing around at their possible meanings. One such idea made him scrunch up his face and narrow his eyes in serious contemplation.

The man looked and could see Markos...in him?

Looking at his hands instinctively, Elikos shrugged off that idea and turned to go. Instead of going though, he took a couple steps back as the man stood and passed him by on his own way gone. The idea he shrugged off came back to itch at his curiosity when again Elias asked his question. Did he know his parents. The slop about not stealing was ignored.

Considering Elias with raised chin and crossed arms, sleeping Itzy cradled in the crook of one elbow, he thought hard. He knew his mother's name. That was all he knew. He'd never met her that he knew of. He'd never figured out who his father might be. Elias' words a moment ago became heavy. The words he'd only partially heard nagged at him. Instead of answering Elias' question about if he knew his parents, he took the assumption he'd understood the meaning of the few words he'd overheard and asked his own questions instead. Which in itself was probably at least half the answer Elias had wondered.

"Ya really think I look like Markos? Heard ya say somethin 'bout looks. Ya think he's m' father?" With that idea voiced, his desire to know began to grow.

He had expected Elikos to blow him off again, after all, he clearly wasn't the most cooperative... and if he was being honest with himself he doubted Locke was helping with that. A twinge of regret for not being there for K'ten and Locke before K'ten's passing hit him again. Maybe Locke would have gone down a different path if he had had more than K'ten as a big part of his life. This wasn't about Locke though, at least not right now, especially when Elikos said something else Elias didn't expect.

"Ya really think I look like Markos? Heard ya say somethin 'bout looks. Ya think he's m' father?"

For a moment, his eyes widened with some surprise. He had never said that, but he sure had been thinking it throughout his interactions with the boy. Perhaps he had misheard him at some point? Or maybe he had said something, or had just made it that obvious.

"I... Yes, I do think you look like him. And your name is similar to mine and his. I don"t know... but I think you could be his son... or at least... he might know something about you." Shards, what had Markos been keeping from Elias and for how long? He realized now just how much he probably didn't know, how much Markos had kept from him. "I"ll need to contact him though, to find out more." Assuming he would tell him, but Elias had an idea on how to broach the subject with his brother.

Did he trust this man named Elias? No. Then why did he open his mouth and blurt out in a voice quiet to be heard but not carry much beyond the man that had spoken, "I wanna see 'im."

Realizing what he'd just said, he narrowed his eyes, lifted his chin almost defiantly and repeated his choice. What Locke would make of this, he could only guess. He had an idea but wasn't this his life? His choice? Elikos could do as he pleased. "If ya know where he is, ya can take me. Righ'?" He dared the man, with his bold set to his frame, to say no.

Itzy shifted in her sleep against his arm and he looked down at her briefly. She would come too. He'd not leave her behind. He knew he was going. This man would take him. He'd not accept anything less. Why he wanted to see the man he'd only met once turns ago, he could not put into words. He just felt strongly that he had to.

"I wanna see 'im."

Those words definitely caught Elias by surprise, and for a moment, he stared at the boy, watching how his body language seemed to dare him to tell him no. He... didn't want to tell him no, of course not, not when he was so suspicious as to what was at play here. Elikos had as much a right to know as Elias did, perhaps more, even, if Elias' suspicions were correct.

He rubbed the back of his neck in thought for a moment, then gave Elikos the best answer he could.

"I can't just go there, at least not right now without planning. Markos' family... well... he was adopted by another family, and his family doesn't like me much. It's complicated, really." He could tell how much he sounded like he was just making excuses though, so he shook his head and tried again.

"I need to send some messages to Markos first, and try to set up a meeting with him somewhere appropriate for us all. He still lives back in Walled Hold, so it needs to be planned." There was also the fact Daywhers didn't between like Dragons did, but that wasn't as big of a problem, as they could possibly get a rider to take them to Walled. People were still visiting there, despite the rumors of political unrest within the Hold's walls.

"I'm going to need some time. But I swear..." he paused a moment, a hand going to his hip, but he didn't have his sword with him. "I swear on my blade, I'll figure out how to get you to see him too."

"....It's complicated, really."

Elikos wanted to smart off and say 'So's your face' but he didn't. When Elias shook his head and spoke again, he kept his arms crossed, his eyes narrowed and his ears listening. In this way, he was showing great restraint.

"I need to send some messages to Markos first, and try to set up a meeting with him somewhere appropriate for us all. He still lives back in Walled Hold, so it needs to be planned."

His expression did not change. He was wondering when the man would just cut to the chase and tell him no. All of the excuses were doing nothing but irritating his already short patience.

"I'm going to need some time. But I swear..." he paused a moment, a hand going to his hip, but he didn't have his sword with him. "I swear on my blade, I'll figure out how to get you to see him too."

One eyebrow raised. It was his only visible sign of his surprise in the moment. Where was the refusal he'd been waiting to hear? Where was the reasons that Elikos would not be going? They were not there. Instead a swear. A swear to do as he wished but it would take time. Thinking on this for a long moment, he exhaled a breath as he came to a decision.

"Swear'n is good 'n all fur some but don't mean nothin' to me. Got somethin' I kin hold 'til you make right on yur words? Somethin' yur gonna want back?" He had an idea of something the man could hand over for the promise to be believed but he wanted to see if the man would offer it or something else.

Elais had at least hoped the lad would accept that, but it seemed he wouldn't, the swear on his blade seemingly meaning nothing to him. Then again, what did he expect? Elias probably would have felt similarly before he had been trained under Petar. And he had to admit, Elikos was a good attempted negotiator, but it was as far as he would get with Elias today.

"I'm afraid not," he answered honestly, shaking his head. "You will just have to take me at my word. It would be foolish of me to hand over my one item of sentimental value to a kid who did try to pick it from my pocket that very day." His lips hinted at a smile then.

"I may have to earn your trust, but the same will have to go for you to me as well. It helps that I already know the rider who brought you here. It's not so easy to lose people in a Weyr, so we'll see each other again, hopefully when I have something for you." His hands went into his pockets habitually then. Already he was trying to think of what would be the best way to do this. Could he bring Markos to the Weyr? Perhaps that would be even more difficult than going to Walled... but was it really safe for him to go to Walled? And with a child he hardly knew at that? He would have to figure it out though. Both he and Elikos needed to know the truth.

Was he pleased with the words Elias spoke? Not at all. Did he understand the reasoning behind them? Yes, begrudgingly. He'd not want to hand over a belonging either. Did Elikos expect to ever see the man again, despite Elias' words to the contrary? No. After they parted ways here and now, there was no reason that the man would hunt him up at Locke's place. He'd never meet this Markos person again. He'd never find out if they were related, which was a new thought growing in his mind. His heart had no place for family, he wouldn't let it even have that flicker of hope. If he wanted a family... no, if he needed a family, he had one with Locke and the kids. He didn't care about nobody else and nobody cared for him. That's just the way life went. It was fine, he told himself.

He always one prone to lying.

"Fine." He grumbled and began to walk away. He'd not even look back. What'd he care? He did not care, he convinced himself. Besides, he had Itzy to take care of and a burning pocket that had 'collected' one or two other trinkets in the chaos where her egg had been given. He had to hide them in one of his caches.
