May your pockets be filled with gold - stand alone

Not the large stone caverns that Weyr people are used to, these are buildings built on the top of the cliff, sometimes referred to as the Weyr Cliff. These buildings are all the same size, with multiple apartments for dragonriders to live in in each building. Because of space constraints, dragons sleep in large pavilions built around the dragonrider apartments.

The little golden starlizard wasn't going to stay little for long. Aranrod was still rather bemused by the creature's presence. She had practically stumbled onto the hatching eggs, but most of them had been destroyed by predators or the elements. The little gold was the first one to hatch, and Aranrod had a meatroll left from her earlier meal.

At least this time, the little hatchling hadn't been meant for someone else. She was from a wild clutch, and would have been wild herself if Aranrod hadn't been so lucky. But there she was, sleeping on a pillow, with the glows in the room only half-open to protect her from the light. Aranrod knew that starlizards could be daytime creatures eventually, but the poor thing had wanted to stay out of the light at first.

Leulaw and Dylandon were both perched on the headboard staring down at their new family member, and Aranrod looked up from her to the two bronzes. They had been the only reason she found out about the starlizard clutch, after all, suddenly diving away from her and Zenith to a cave they were flying over. They had flown back just as quickly, but darted back and forth between the cave and Zenith until she and Aranrod took the hint.

She is so tiny, Zenith commented, though she wasn't in a position to see the newly hatched starlizard where she was. She had seen the little baby gold for a moment when Aranrod brought her out of the cave entrance, but the moment they stepped into sunlight, the hatchling dove into Aranrod's shirt, hiding from the bright light. Even smaller than the little ones we already have.

Aranrod smiled. Zenith had been cheerful about accepting the little bronzes as soon as her rider was permitted to bring them home, and it was good that she was going to be just as cheerful about this little one. "I'm pretty sure that she'll be bigger than them when she's grown," she whispered, though she didn't really think that the little starlizard queen would wake up for several more candlemarks.

Eventually, Aranrod would have to get her new pet adjusted to daytime, but in this way, the constant sleep of hatchlings worked in her favor. When the little gold started spending more time awake, it would be natural for her to prefer the times that the rest of the little fair was already out and about.

The little one needed a name, and Aranrod thought for a while, before deciding. "Danu," she said, not quite certain where she came up with it. It sounded a bit like her mother's name had, but not quite the same, and it just felt right. She stroked the sleeping, and slightly glowing, starlizard.

She was glad, that when she accidentally acquired a golden pet, it hadn't been intended for someone else. Her two bronze boys could have gotten her into so much trouble if her luck had been a little worse. They settled down from their perches then and Aranrod started trying to figure out how to move Danu off the pillow without waking her. She had a feeling this wasn't going to be the last time she had this problem.

It was several sevendays before Aranrod had given in to the inevitable and purchased a new pillow. Unfortunately, Danu had stolen that pillow instead. At least Aranrod got her own pillow back at that point, which was helpful. The golden starlizard was definitely more of a prima donna than Aranrod's two bronze firelizards, though she had expected that.

Aside from expecting pampering as her due, however, Danu was a rather sweet pet, never happy unless she was snuggling up to either Aranrod, Zenith, or one of the bronze boys. It hadn't taken her long to adjust to a diurnal cycle like the other members of her little family, since she really did not like being left behind to sleep while Aranrod went about her daily tasks.

These days it was common to see the woman walking around with Danu on one shoulder and a bronze on the other. Occasionally, Danu would be taking a nap curled up on Zenith, but she generally preferred to spend her time watching Aranrod's activities, and flirting with most of the people Aranrod spoke to. Unlike the bronzes, she disliked delivering messages, though she was certainly capable of doing so. Instead, she liked greeting weyrfolk as if they were her own subjects, coaxing scratches or treats out of anyone who met her eyes.

In short, she was a flirt, and Aranrod sometimes thought Danu was flirting on her behalf. It didn't escape her notice that Danu sought the most attention from people that Aranrod found nice to look at, even if she would normally never have approached them on her own. The golden starlizard had a few people she favored most, though, and Aranrod was grateful that they were also her own good friends.
