Fancy Some Food? - Kate | A'ric

Image
Despite being new, this dining hall is very similar to the one back at old Atricis, giving a familiarity to the new Weyr. It is one large, central cavern carved out from the side of the cliff with many tables of varying sizes and seat numbers. The kitchens are attached, and there is a set of stairs leading down into the lower caverns.

Fancy Some Food? - Kate | A'ric

Wingrider Solai and Green Dragon Tyreth

Solai had only just arrived, but already she found herself falling back into the routine of life. She met with her family, followed by her new Wingleader, Ay'li. After she received her new Wingrider knots with the information about drills in the morning, Solai was escorted to her own apartment.

My own place! Thank fuck! she thought in elation as she fell into her own bed, a big bed, one big enough for her to stretch out upon every night without fear of falling off of it.

You like it, I take it, Tyreth chuckled into her thoughts.

This bed is twice as big as the one Ar'vis let me have.

You made the old one work well enough. Thinking of breaking this one in?

Solai's content smile widened into a grin. Only with a long night of sleep.

Aside from the impressive bed, however, the apartment felt surprisingly hollow. To give her quarters some character, she decorated it with what few positions she brought with her, but she owned so little for all the space the Weyr provided her with. After an hour of walking about in the enclosure, Solai grew tired of it, and realises she needed some fresh air and liveliness. She needed to live, and she also needed some food. With Scarletto gathered upon her shoulder, the young woman made her way to the Dining Hall, curious as to whether or not she would find some familiar faces among the sea of strangers.

She collected a plate of food, including a nice cut of herd beast with a side of tubers and greens, and made sure to get a modest glass of red wine to go with it. Though Solai did not like to get drunk, her parents taught her how to enjoy a vintage with her meal. Now the question came where to sit. She saw no one she knew nearby, but she did catch sight of an open seat. After a quick calculation of her odds, she decided to take the seat provided before another eager bottom claimed it.

"Hey, sorry. Hope you don't mind if I join you," she warned the man at the table. Once settled, she grinned in delight. "I'm absolutely starving." She cut into the meat, and grinned in satisfaction at the amount of juice that spread upon the plate, lapping around her tubers and greens. It was cooked just right. "I'm Solai, rider of green Tyreth, and I've just moved here from Evanoria-" She stuck out a hand, for she knew her manners well enough. "And you..." her voice stopped as she looked to the man, and for the first time, something dawned on her, "Do I know you? I feel like I know you."

Even Scarletto let out a peep from his perch on the back of her seat, curious as to who this man was.

Dark eyes glanced around, and A'ric couldn't help but just, stare off into the distance for a moment. For some reason, he was more tired today than he normally was, and he had already found himself zoning out more than once. It was not something he was proud of. As a Wingleader, he knew he should always keep his focus, even if everything wasn't going right for him, or for Behemoth. The two of them were a team, and they led this Wing, and made sure they always acted like it. Today though, was different. Even with Behemoth pretty much yelling at him to keep his attention on what he was doing, he just couldn't.

Not that things were bad, it was just, today was one of those days where he kind of wished he wasn't a Wingleader. Sure, he loved the honor and the chance to constantly prove himself, but sometimes, he just wished he had more time to himself. More time for Viktor, more time for Kit, more time for Behemoth (besides drills), and more time for hanging with friends. That way of thinking he knew wasn't really the greatest, but it was how he felt. At least he wasn't the Weyrleader anymore for now. That had been a lot of work, and he had been grateful for the opportunity. It was nice to not have as MUCH pressure now. Then again, there was always pressure. It was the pressure that he and Behemoth both put on themselves.

Finally the drills were over, and A'ric went and took a nice hot bath, trying to get himself to relax a little. Taking a few deep breaths, he found himself sinking lower into the water. Honestly, he didn't want to get out, but a rumble in his stomach reminded him that it was getting close to dinner time, and he hadn't really ate anything for lunch. Food had been the last thing on his mind. Knowing the drills they had, he had just wanted to get started and get on with the day.

Eventually, he got out, and got dressed in some clean clothes and then headed down to the dining hall to get some dinner. After getting his food, he sat down at one of the tables and quickly began eating. His attention was only on his food, and he looked up when he heard a voice, and quickly swallowed his food. "No, I dont mind at all." The bronze rider was not one to really care who he sat with at meals. If some of his other friends were there, he would sit with them, if they weren't, he would try and just be friendly to whoever he did sit with.

A small smile spread across his face as she talked about being starving, and then introduced herself. "Nice to meet you. I'm A'ric, rider of Bronze Behemoth. As for knowing me, I don't believe we've met before. But usually everyone knows Behemoth more than me anyway."

Taking a sip of his drink he continued. "I hear Evanoria is nice. I hope you find it nice here as well. It's always nice to have new faces around."

"No, I don't mind at all."

Good, because he would not find himself with much of a choice had he said no. Already she had broken a piece of bread to sop up the juices. As she did so, Scarletto's talons prickled against the wood of her seat in anticipation, knowing any moment she would give him a tender morsel from that tender cut...

"Nice to meet you. I'm A'ric, rider of Bronze Behemoth. As for knowing me, I don't believe we've met before. But usually everyone knows Behemoth more than me anyway."

After a solid shake of his hand, and a quick "Nice to meet you," she enjoyed a juicy bite of her bread. Perhaps she should have waited, but how could she when the bread was rosy with the savoury goodness of her meal, beckoning her for that first bite. It was well worth it for all she had to chew, giving him the chance to speak about Evanoria before she could clarify her previous question.

"I hear Evanoria is nice. I hope you find it nice here as well. It's always nice to have new faces around."

No no, she knew him! Solai was sure of that as she finally swallowed. "It's nice enough," she replied. With her stomach's demands briefly sated for the moment, she eased back into her seat and swirled the content of her glass in thought. "Yeah, but I'm not really that new, and I knew I saw you from somewhere. I saw you Impress. It was Lilith's last clutch." As a child, Solai mourned a friend's death. She remembered calling to Lilith, but the gold had passed into the void. "Shards... that was exactly a decade ago, wasn't it?" It occurred over the summer up in the old Atricis Weyr at the time, and she knew it was ten turns ago, for she neither forgot the gold's passing or the fact she bore two golds of her own in a single clutch. Both were worth remembering. "I remember Behemoth. He was a beast even the day he broke shell. He's very unmistakable."

Now that his stomach was somewhat satisfied, the bronze rider took a sip of his drink. The young man never really paid attention to how hungry he was when he was doing drills and the likes. Everything seemed to go right to the back of his mind when he was busy with stuff like that. Sometimes he would go out with some friends, or meet them at the dining hall. Then he'd always have the biggest plate full of stuff out of anyone, and everyone would wonder why he didn't eat. Sometimes, he thought it was quiet funny, that he could forget to eat. Then again, as Behemoth had pointed out, it was't exactly good to be that hungry.

For a few more moments, A'ric's food went untouched as they exchanged pleasantries and the likes. As he took a sip of his drink, a thoughtful expression came to his face. She had been there when he Impressed? For a moment, he played that day over in his mind, trying to remember if he had said anything to her, or anything like that. Now that she had mentioned it, he did vaguely recall a young girl there, that sort of resembled Solai. The young man honestly didn't know HOW he remembered that now, but he did. Hatchings were such a big deal, that it was almost odd that he could remember anything else besides the actual Hatching.

A decade? Dark eyes looked at Solai for a moment, as if in shock by those words. Well, actually, he pretty much was. Had it really been that long? Behemoth had him had been partners now for like a lifetime it seemed like, but A'ric just assumed that was always a figure of speech that everyone used. "I can't believe it either. It doesn't feel as though its been that long. I mean it feels like its been forever." Pausing a moment, he couldn't help but chuckle. "Yes, Behemoth was, and still is, a beast. He's calmed down a bit more by now though. I think I'm rubbing off on him a little bit. His ego is still as big as ever. Now that we've been Weyrleader, he feels like going back to Wingleader is a demotion. I finally got him to see that t's really not. Sometimes he still doesn't believe me, but for the most part, he keeps quiet about it nowa."

Taking another sip of his drink, he drained it and then looked at Solai. "Im going to get another drink. Want me to bring you back another one?"

Solai gave a smirk. The bronze dragon was oddly quiet...

"Im going to get another drink. Want me to bring you back another one?"

She gave a glance to her wine glass, measuring its content with several swirls, but she was satisfied by the level of it. "I'm fine, but thank you for the offer." Maybe after she finished her meal, she would consider another glass, though one normally sufficed. Her autumn eyes followed the man as he stepped off, giving her a moment to enjoy several more bites... and feeding several choice cuts to Scarletto as well.

As she ate, she thought on what A'ric said about Behemoth. The boisterous bold beast did seem a bit... subdued... While the bronzerider found himself a drink, Solai succumbed to old habits, and reached out to the bronze dragon as she had done to all the dragons of Atricis all those turns ago. Have you really gone as soft and quiet as he says? That seems rather unlike you, Behemoth. As a child, Solai spoke with all the young dragons as they grew, and for a moment she wondered if Behemoth might recognise the mind that spoke to him despite her absence over the last few turns.

You do seem a bit... silent, Behemoth, Tyreth added. Do you no longer feel the need flex your ego, since you know you have the skills to back the boasts? If Behemoth caught the tease in her voice, he would be right.

Yes, she's flirting with you, Solai confirmed with a smirk before she took another dainty sip of her wine, and swished the flavours about. Mmmm... there were hints of rose in this one. You really that surprised?

Honestly, the bronze rider did not know many young women around here who drank more than one glass of wine, or any other alcohol, but at the same time, he didn't really know Solai. Plus, it was always polite to ask if they wanted another when you yourself were going to get one. Smiling and nodding he said, "Alright, I'll be right back then, and we can continue our conversation." The bronze rider did not really want to seem rude, but he wanted to get another drink before the lines got to long once again. Besides, he was enjoying this conversation. It was always nice to make a new friend, right? You could never have enough of them.

I have gone neither soft nor quiet. I simply know how to pick my battles better now. With age comes experience. At least that is what I always hear everyone else saying

I guess you could say that. Although I would still like to prove my skills, if need be

It didn't take him long to cup back with a cup of klah. As he sat back down, dark eyes glanced at Solai and he smiled softly. "So, how long have you been back then? Is everything pretty much as you remember it?" To him, everything felt and looked pretty much the same, but then again, he had not been gone from here for any length of time to be the judge as to if things had changed or not. It would be nice to have someone else's perspective on it. For a moment, he found himself hoping he wasn't sounding to rude, or too straight forward. The bronze rider figure Solai would probably let him know if he was.

I have gone neither soft nor quiet. I simply know how to pick my battles better now. With age comes experience. At least that is what I always hear everyone else saying

That's what I thought, Solai mused in turn.

I guess you could say that. Although I would still like to prove my skills, if need be

Solai felt the whirl of Tyreth's eyes, which only widened the young woman's smile. Well feel free to prove yourself all you like with me. I do love a good challenge. Had he been at her side, he would have felt the teasing smack of her tail against his hide. Instead, he had to settle for the spur of her words instead that served to drive him onward.

Her cut of meat seemed to vanish from her plate in A'ric's absence. It seemed she and Scarletto had worked up quite the appetite after their transfer. Upon his return, she had begun to wet her vegetables with the juice that remained of her tender meat. But shards it had tasted wonderful.

"So, how long have you been back then? Is everything pretty much as you remember it?"

She had just spooned some food into her mouth when he asked her. She raised a finger, giving herself a chance to chew and swallow before she spoke. It was the one courtesy her mother managed to teach her. She gave smiled when she finished and managed to speak. "I guess, but it isn't too. Different dragons, different people. And everyone I've known has changed too. They've Impressed, found lovers, have kids. It's strange, for sure. They weyr just... feels different to me, though I don't know. Maybe it's just me." She gave him a long look, curious as to how he changed over the turns. "I'm sure you know what that's like, change. How has live changed for you since you've been here? Promotions? Lovers? Kids?" It was a personal question, but Solai was bestowed with the gift of blunt curiosity. If he did not want to answer, he could just tell her off, and she would take no offence.

When the green dragon spoke to him once again, A'ric could feel Behemoth's ego swell just a little bit, and the dragon himself gave a rumble of appreciation. Of course, after a moment, he tried to forget about it, but it wasn't quiet that easy. While he had learned to keep his ego in check, from time to time, he still couldn't help but let it get the better of him, even if it was only for a short amount of time. Behemoth found himself puffing his chest out, even if it was just for a moment, and even if no one could actually see it.

A'ric did feel a bit rude that he hadn't noticed that she was eating when he started talking to her again. Patiently he took a drink, waiting for her to finish chewing. Really, he hadn't meant to catch her off guard like that or anything, it had just happened. The bronze rider found himself hoping that it didn't make her feel awkward of uncomfortable or anything like that. Truthfully, he hated it when people tried to talk to him when his mouth was full, mostly because he didn't want them to think he was ignoring them, although if they used their eyes it wouldn't be hard to see. It never ceased to amaze him how dim witted people could be though. For instance, he had held up a finger before like Solai just had, and the people had just kind of starred at him, and he wanted to call them dimglows but managed to keep his tongue in check.

Solai was now done chewing and her voice reached him, drawing his attention back to her. A'ric was quiet pleased to know that the young woman felt that not much had changed. Change was good, he would to delude himself into thinking it wasn't, but it was still nice to know things weren't changing really fast. At her questions, he smiled softly. "Well, Ive been promoted to Wingleader, and then I was Weyrleader for a bit. Now I'm just back to being a Wingleader. As for a lover...well, it's complicated." For a moment, his mind went to Kit, and the fact that he had really developed some feelings for her, but he pretty much knew that she wasn't going to settle down, so for the time being, he wasn't really saying anything to her. "And yes, I have a son now. HIs name is Viktor."

Grinning he said, "What about you? Do you have someone you left behind? Or someone else back here that you met back up with?"

"Well, I've been promoted to Wingleader, and then I was Weyrleader for a bit. Now I'm just back to being a Wingleader. As for a lover...well, it's complicated."

It's complicated was usually a euphemism for either Yes I'm in a relationship, but I don't want to be or I'm in a relationship, but it's not as serious as I want it to be. Considering A'ric's character and the softness in his face, Solai wagered it was the second, though she thought it was a shame really. What a waste.

"And yes, I have a son now. His name is Viktor. What about you? Do you have someone you left behind? Or someone else back here that you met back up with?"

She made a glance at a plate, poking at some of the tubers. "I'm single. Not ready to really settle yet-" she was only eighteen "-I'm just... enjoying life I suppose, living it to it's fullest." She enjoyed a tuber, and swallowed it with ease, before she turned the table back on him. "So... 'complicated' can mean a lot of things. What does it mean for you and this person? You want them, but they don't? Or you they want you, but you don't?" She already knew the answer, but she asked any way. It was not even that she was nosy, but more like a peeve of hers that she needed to pet.

For a moment, A'ric had thought he had managed to turn the tables on her. Honestly, that really had not been his intention, it had just worked out that way. Talking about himself was not something he was fond of doing. Back home, he had always been taught that it was always about the other person, never about you. With that in mind, he always tried to keep the conversation on the other person, but at the same time he didn't want to make them uncomfortable. Making them feel uncomfortable was NOT his intention. The bronze rider knew that he sometimes felt awkward when the conversation was mostly just about him.

When she answered his question he couldn’t help but smile and chuckle just a little. ”Well that’s always a good thing to do. I never wanted to put myself out there or try anything until I impressed to Behemoth. After that it was like I came out of my shell or something like that.”

Taking a sip of his drink, he leaned back in his chair just a little before Solai's voice caught his attention. Not being one to usually blush, he could feel his cheeks getting a little red at the green rider's question. ”Well, honestly it’s the first one. Actually it’s not that I want her and she doesn’t want me, she does, it’s just, she is not really the settling down type. I don’t know if that will change or not but I do have feelings for her, and she is the mother of my son. I just want to give her some time for Victors sake. Maybe she will come around and we can b an actual family.”

As silly as that sounded it was true. ”I know it probably sounds weird to you, helll it even sounds weird to me but there is just, something about her that makes me not want to give up without a fight. I know that might mean getting my heart stepped on, but I honestly think that Kit is worth it.”
