68th Dragon Clutch Touching

A large natural cavern found by the initial expedition. It has been cleared out and filled with sand. Naturally flowing hotspring pools inside the cavern keeps this cavern warm enough for dragon eggs, but also makes it very humid with all the steam from the hotspring waters.

That's right ladies and gentle dragons! Atricis is hosting an official Touching for the upcoming Hatching!

The rules for the touching is very simple and, with all we do, the main point is to simply have fun. Please allow me to go over some of the basics. First of all, only official candidates are allowed to be on the sands for the touching. Those of you with stands candidate might be wondering, "Can my stands candidate sneak into the touching?" The answer is technically, yes they can. However, the staff would like to stress that IC actions = IC consequences. Anyone trying to sneak onto the sands will be given a chance to be caught. If they are, then IC punishment will follow. If you are not comfortable with the idea of your character potentionally being punished, then don't let them sneak in. Official candidates, please keep in mind that getting to touch the eggs is a privilage, not a right. When you enter the sands be sure to show your respects to Queen Andromedath and Bronze Shardamakath. They and their riders will be watching the sands very closely, so keep to your best behavior. Again, I want to stress IC actions = IC consequences. If you do anything that could be construed as harmful or disrespectful to the eggs, then swift action will follow, likely in the form of being asked to leave and additional punishments being given.

Now, onto the OOC information. Below you can see we have some beautifully colored eggs just waiting to be touched and talked to. That's right, talked to. The touching will go in rounds. The first round, you will have your candidates approach an egg and interact with it. Then, there will be a response from Isilsk of that eggs reaction to your candidate. That ends the first round. Next round you can either touch a new egg or continue to stay with that egg if you so wish. More than one candidate can be touching the same egg at a time. This works easiest if everyone assumes that their candidate is the only one touching the egg. A little hint since there are so many eggs, it may helps to make a list of the eggs at the bottom of your posts and mark which one your candidate has gone to already. For example: Egg 1, Egg 2, Egg 3, Egg 4, Egg 5

IC wise this thread is fuzzy timed to a week before the hatching, but since we want everyone to get the chance to touch the eggs as many times as possible, we're posting it now.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to shoot a PM to one of the staff members and remember....HAVE FUN!!

K'rios stood off to the side as the rules were stated. He was there along with the Candidatemaster to help supervise the candidates, to ensure order was kept, and that no rules were broken. He doubted anyone would break the rules, or cause a disruption, given the special circumstances taking place; Andromedath was being generous, considering not all gold mothers were willing to allow touchings to take place with their eggs. He sincerely hoped the candidates didn't take advantage of the queen mother and her bronze mate; he hoped they kept their heads about them, and understood the sensitivity of the moment. Most of all, he hoped they enjoyed this interactive time.

Iktomith gave him a little shit for worrying, but he couldn't help it, it was in his nature at present time. He glanced at Bellatrix and she nodded, as if sensing his thoughts and acknowledging them. They might not have the same thinking at times, but they understood one another, he liked to think. They would discuss things later, as they usually did, and he was glad they could be open with one another about their different methods. Hopefully, this would go well, and if it led to good things, who knew. When the candidates were released to step forward and greet the queen and her mate, he held his breath, and waited to see what would happen.

When it had been announced that eggs would be touched, Varric couldn't believe his ears. He knew sometimes it happened, but not always... he just hadn't expected it this time around! He wasn't going to argue of course, he was going to enjoy it, because it was a chance to see the eggs well before the hatching, and perhaps even prove himself to the queen mother and her mate that he was worthy of her children. Would that help his chances, he wondered, having failed to Impress his first time standing? He didn't know, but it was worth trying this second time, and if it turned out to help, perhaps that would be his answer. Then again, he was still trying to recall that the dragon decided, it was just that right now, his mind was trying to wrap around the fact that they were standing on the hatching grounds, and the eggs were right over there.

Rules were discussed, and explained, and they were told what they had to do to remain on the sands. A part of his mind blanched at the idea of sneaking on later. Who would be stupid enough to do that? He did a lot of dumb shit, but not even he was idiotic enough to try and slip in later on. He never would have, even without this time with the eggs. They were released to step forward, and like everyone else, he paused to bow before Andromedath and Shardamakath. "Dear queen mother, dear bronze sire, thank you for this gift you have allowed us today. I promise, it will not be squandered." To himself, not sure it would be heard, hoping it would not, he added without intending 'At least it will not be by myself...'

As others did the same, he stepped among the eggs, his breath held in wonder, and he tried to decide which one he would visit with first. They all called to him in their own unique way, each shell brightly colored, each seeming to draw him in with their pattern in some manner. Did he want to stop by the one with spots, did he want to stop by the one that looked cracked - were those real cracks, or just artificial, crafted by the shapes bound to it by its colorful shell? He wasn't sure, and he seemed to wander around as others found those they wanted to interact with, and he didn't think he would decide, but one... one kept glimmering, kept saying something to him in whispers...

The Rusted Iron Egg was beautiful, like a piece of metal that had deserved to have fingers graze over it over and over again. He intended to do just that as he moved to sit with it for a moment, for it was an egg that needed to be sat with. He was supposed to talk with it, right? To say a few words, interact with it, things like that? It felt almost foolish speaking to it, but he decided he would give it a try. "Hello? I don't know if you can hear me, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to say something. My name is Varric, and I can't help but wonder what you contain."

This was the moment when the reality of an impending hatching struck strongest, when it coalesced from daydreams and hopes into sharp-edged possibility. Sunaia had long since lost track of the number of times she'd reached this point. In her early years it had been a time of mingled nerves and excitement. Now, after so many turns of failure, she carried the weight of the moment like a pebble in her stomach. She had come to Atricis to heal, yes; she had also come to see if the sands here would be kinder than Telgar's had been. So far that hadn't been the case.

She controlled the shame and dread by thinking of the sweet young lives cradled inside of the eggs. Arranged like jewels on velvet, she had a few seconds to admire the collection of them before it was time for the candidates to pay their respects. Her bow followed a beat behind Varric's. "We're grateful and honoured to have this opportunity, and we promise to take care with your children. Thank you."

Simple but heartfelt, both the words and the way she inclined herself to dam and sire. Then, turning, she surveyed her choices. Dark speckling against pale shell caught her eye and drew her to an egg that was neither the largest nor the smallest in the clutch. The Spilled Ink Egg had a subtle sort of beauty, which became more evident as Sunaia sifted carefully closer-- the darker spots were not all one uniform shade. The way the markings faded the farther they spread from the darkest spatters made for a pretty effect and reminded her so strongly of the records kept by Telgar's Headwoman that the young woman was left smiling. Here, it seemed, was a fragment of nostalgic captured in egg form.

She stole a glance left and right to be certain that no other candidates had closed on this choice yet; she didn't want to keep others from their first favourite. Seeing no one, she reached out to let her fingertips glance over the shell first-- gauging its hardness-- before she ventured to rest her palm against its side.

"Hello, little dreamer. I'm Sunaia," she murmured, "but my family calls me Sunny. You'll be free soon to tell us your name, I think. Won't that be fine?"

Due to his volatile nature, it wasn't often that Laikanu was permitted to attend the Touching of any of his previous clutches. When it came time that the eggs of the current clutch was hard enough to withstand the the event, Laikanu was more than just a little bit excited. Because of the presence of Mils in his life, Laikanurinato was getting into less fights than he had in the past. Sure he still sparred when the chance came along but over all the man's behavior was improving. Bouncing on the balls of his feet the long-term candidate was waiting on the signal to come to greet the Queen and her mate. An old habit by now, but this time Laikanu felt the urge to impress. This was his last, best chance and the last time he had face a queen-mother on these sands, he and Mila hadn't given their best greetings.

With a deep calming breath, the blue eyed man stepped away from his scarred friend to bow deeply before the proud mother. "Many thanks, blessed lady, for this chance to meet your little ones," He began as he returned to his full height. "May this be the first of many enchanting clutches," Laikanu finished before moving off to the side to wait on Mils once more. While he knew that the now shy girl wouldn't remain by his side, Laikanu wanted to make sure that she survived this encounter with a Gold. Moments later the taller candidate had one arm wrapped around the petite girl as he guided her towards a cluster of eggs not too far away. Once there the brunet let one hand fall onto the closest egg that caught his attention. The Dancing Trails Egg was the first to feel his roughened hand as he whispered a soft greeting to the dragonet waiting inside the egg.

If Laikanu was excited to be on the heated Sands, Halimila was nervous, almost fearful, to be facing the eggs once more. Tugging on the simple ribbon-bracelet around her wrist, Mila waited for her brother-figure to finish his lavish greeting to the parents of clutch. Her mind tripped over ideas of how to greet the dam and sire of the eggs that could hold her future. It wasn't easy for the normally cheerful girl to come up with a surefire way to not draw negative attention to herself. At least that's what she thought until she saw Lai's perky smile. A soft chuckle left her then a she realized that her worries were unfounded. There was no pass or fail situation here. This was a happy occasion and it wasn't likely that she would meet the sharp ends of claws here today.

Pulling her skirt to the side in a formal curtsy, Mila flashed a happy smile at the golden lady and her handsome mate. "Thank you for this chance," She said softly feeling hope bloom in her heart once more. "I'm sure they will be amazing," Mila added before she drifted back to her guardian's side. With the same soft smile on her face, Mila tagged along behind the bouncing candidate as he steered them towards his chosen eggs. However, just before he found his first egg to touch, Mila's eye landed on an egg that had her tilting her head a bit. The swirls of blue and green caught her imagination and before her mind caught onto what she was doing, Hali's fingers were tracing one green swirl with a larger smile growing on her cheeks. "Hello little one," Mila said happily as she pressed her palm to the smooth exterior of The Forest River Egg.

A Touching? She had heard of them throughout the past few moons as she learned more and more about being a Candidate, and a potential Dragonrider. The excited whisperings and mutterings of her fellow Candidates helped fuel her thoughts that it was a pleasant surprise that Andromedath was allowing her very first clutch to be Touched. Niomi couldn't help but be a little apprehensive though as they all filed onto the Sands. The last time the girl had step foot upon them, they had been tasked with cleaning them, and she had discovered a few entertaining items. This time, as she moved out across the scorching footing, heat waves visible across it, her eyes moving to the multicolored orbs that housed the dragonets, she couldn't help but be a bit awestruck by it all.

She let a few of the other's give their respects to the Queen first, her own mind racing to try and catch up with the fact she was going to touch a dragon egg, let alone a few of them, or even all of them. She was nervous, and felt almost like she was still a foreigner here. A drudge did not belong on the Sands, should not hope to Impress something as regal and special as a dragon. But then she suddenly found herself standing before the Queen and King, and she froze for the briefest of moments. This wasn't the first time she'd seen the pair, so why was she so tense? Forcing a breath out, she bowed a bit stiffly, her cheeks glowing, she was sure, "Thank you for allowing this great honor, Queen Andromedath, King Shardamakath. The eggs are all wonderful." Now before her face completely burst into flame, she turned and walked for the farthest egg. She didn't even register what color it might be, until she found herself glancing down at its speckled shell.

Pausing beside the Blood Spots Egg, she blinked. The dark spots on it looked a deep crimson, as if covered in blood spatter. It took her a moment before she moved or spoke, swallowing. Why was she so nervous? It was just an egg. But within its mottled shell, it was almost a magical thing. Her entire being would change, wouldn't it, if she Impressed? Taking a breath, she reached out, "Why am I so nervous to touch you? You are just an egg..." Her fingers barely grazed the surface of the shell, and she was mildly surprised at how warm it was, at the grainy yet smooth texture. She half expected the blood spots to feel different than the rest, but it seemed like it was all coloring. Or at least set in hard enough that it might as well have been there from the start. Those hesitant fingertips slowly turned into a palm, and it rested there atop the edge of the shell, "You are going to change someone's life. Maybe mine...That's too big of a responsibility for such a little thing..." Her tone was sad, almost as if lost, and her throat threatened to tighten.

Varren had grown up hearing all kinds of theories about allowing candidates to touch the eggs. Many of them made no sense, of course. The arguments that it decreased the risk of hatchlings being unable to find their bondmate? That was so unusual already, but if the same people were presented either way, Varren didn't see how it could make a difference.

No, he had always thought it was more likely that a Touching helped the hatchling find their person quickly. Fewer injuries that way, especially if it also made the candidates less anxious. So really, by touching every egg, and paying close attention to it, he might be preventing maulings.

He smiled at that thought, a little wryly. He was sure it was more complicated than that, but had he maybe been thinking about that other candidate when he touched the boy's egg back at High Reaches? Had he started up the green's jealousy before she even hatched? Probably not, since dragons supposedly relied on their riders for their memory.

Still, as he bowed to Andromedath and Shardamakath, he had that thought first in his mind. "Thank you for the opportunity," he said, and he thought, I promise to give your babies all of the attention they deserve. He turned, and first approached the Sea Glass Egg, smiling as he looked at it for a moment before touching it.

"You have such a pretty shell," he murmured, letting his hand run across the markings. "We're all waiting for you to break out of it and show us how pretty you are."

Aranrod was trying not to feel like a child let loose at the Gather for the first time. She had never had an opportunity to touch the eggs on the sands before, and she had to admit that she was curious. Did they feel the same as a fire lizard egg? Could you sense the life under your fingertips? She remembered her own excitement over Nali's little egg, but she could touch this time. Even if someone argued later that she Impressed because she touched, wasn't that the point? They were all allowed to!

Still, she knew that she needed to contain her exuberance. The hatchlings weren't ready to meet them YET, after all. She wrapped her fingers together behind her back, bowing to the golden queen as she stepped onto the sands. "Thank you, for letting us meet your babies," she said, not sure if Andromedath heard her voice, but confident the new mother understood her intentions.

She really was like a kid at a Gather for a few moments, but like the ones who stared around not knowing where to go first. So many eggs! She looked at all of them, trying to figure out what order made sense. She privately wondered if the Snake Tracks egg was a zultanite. It was SO BIG compared to some of the others, and that color.... But the color of the egg didn't say much about the color of the dragonet inside. That could be a bronze, a large brown... a garnet maybe?

She allowed herself a moment to fantasize about a garnet dragon. They were high in rank but never tied down to the Weyr by a clutch of eggs. She approached the Snake Tracks egg cheerfully. Maybe a brown, even, and they were such lovable dragons, so easy-going in general. She could see herself riding a brown. She trailed her fingers along the little markings that looked like tracks on the shell before placing her palm gently against the egg. "I can't wait to see what you look like," she whispered. "I bet you're interesting, in there."

Soleius had been doing this for eight turns, now, and he didn't have much longer. At this point, he would only be eligible for this hatching, and maybe one or two more. He couldn't afford to keep assuming that he would eventually Impress, because "eventually" was about to run out. He bowed quietly to the watchful queen, to her bronze mate. This was hardly his first time at a Touching, though obviously not all queens allowed them.

He touched every egg, gently, respectfully, but his thoughts were less on the sands, where they should have been, and more on his brother, and his own future. Perhaps Caerus's decision to become a day wher candidate should have made sense for Soleius as well, but he rather thought that if he did not Impress, he would need to leave the Weyr for at least a few turns before pursuing something like that.

She had been to two Hatching now, and thankfully the second one hadn't overwhelmed her nearly as much as the first. Daela was more prepared the second time around when Soquilith's babies had been breaking free and finding their bonds. The young woman watched each of them with bated breath, both praying to the goddess that her dragon was in one of those eggs, while also dreading the moment when those whirling facets would look upon her. She had been on her tip toes the whole time, ready to stay or bolt at any second though rooted to the ground with hope in her heart.

In the end, there were only shards left behind for her, but the southerner didn't feel the sense of despair that some were feeling, and instead she felt more relieved that anything. Another Hatching had come and gone, and nothing to have to explain to mother, so it was easier this way. At least, so she told herself, though there was the slightest pang of disappointment in her chest that wasn't so easy to get rid of. It followed her until Andromedath had taken to the skies and then whispers of more eggs flooded the Weyr, and soon enough the gold sequestered herself to the Sands to lay her clutch.

Daela had felt herself get a little caught up in the excitement of the Hatching, it was really hard not to when literally everyone around you was constantly talking about it, thinking about, feeling the anticipation and nervousness that foreboded a Hatching as well. The barracks had taken a little adjusting when she'd first arrived, never really having lived in such close quarters with so many people and their emotions were like a river that wouldn't stop flowing around her until sleep claimed her. It just took a different level of tuning, but she was able to quiet the feelings a little better as time went on, as she attended more classes, got to know the people around her.

One person in particular always seemed to stick out like a beacon of...desires, of everything her heart could want, but still she did not give into his wit and prose. Especially after hearing about the rules of candidacy and the promise of celibacy during their tenure in the barracks, though she knew she didn't plan to be in the barracks forever. And so, while he pined for her, Daela had promised and she wasn't the sort to break her promises so easily...though she certainly didn't mind the attention from such a handsome man such as himself. She'd finally found out his name was Varric, but he would always be her handsome stranger, the man who tried to sweep her off her feet.

As the Hatching drew nearer, their lessons revolved around etiquette on and off the Sands, and what was expected of them on the actual day itself. To better prepare them, it seemed the Masters had a different sort of lesson in mind for them, and the candidates were called for the lesson outside the Hatching Sands instead. Bellatrix gave a short explanation of what a Touching was, though many candidates seemed to understand right off the bat and the thrill of excitment surged through the crowd. They would get to...touch the eggs? Why hadn't they for Lennoth or Soquilith's clutches? Was it only for a maiden golds' clutch, or this just special circumstances? Was Andromedath more accepting than the other queens? Whatever their reasoning, Daela wouldn't argue for the chance to get up close and personal with the eggs for a little while.

As they were led onto the sands, Daela always remembered her manners and stepped up before the Queen and her bronze mate, giving a respectful bow of her head and a cursty. "May the goddesses' blessings shine upon you and yours, forever and always." The young woman said politely and gave another curtsy before moving to follow her fellow candidates and stepped gingerly toward the clutch of eggs. The dancer moved with a grace around the eggs, delicate fingers reaching to grace the shell of this one, and then brush against that one, searching for the one that seemed to call to her. Her steps were light and careful around the eggs, around her fellow candidates, and while weaved, she hummed softly, to herself and perhaps to the eggs.

There, sitting at the edge of the clutch, whose shell was the calming colors of pale greens and pinks swirled about, just yearning to be touched, and she weaved toward The Pastel Tranquility Egg. Her steps only faltered for a brief moment as she emerged between the eggs and saw who it was standing nearby, talking soothingly to the egg his rugged hand stroked. Quietly, Daela stepped up toward the egg that had sang to her, though her gaze flickered toward Varric, the barest hint of a smile tugging at her lips. Standing so close, yet so far away, and Dae could almost feel the flutter in her chest, or was that his?

.... or was it coming from the egg? Her eyes widened as she felt something coming from the egg itself, the warmth of it's shell against the palm of her hand. "Well hello there." The southerner said quietly, leaning in a little closer as if to get a better feel for what was inside. "You must be eager to greet the world little one, and you will soon enough." She added with a soft smile as she stroked the pastel shell with delicate fingers.

Just to note....it's much easier having actual conversations, but the babies inside aren't literally talking to your candidate. The things said are more what your candidate is feeling from the shell.

Image - The Rusted Iron Egg to Varric

"Hello? I don't know if you can hear me, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to say something. My name is Varric, and I can't help but wonder what you contain."

The inhabitant inside the shell seems calm and serence, though is that a hint of humor you feel coming from it? As if it would tell you 'It's a dragon laid egg, I would assume that makes me, in fact, a dragon.' It isn't a mean sort of observation, but merely a logical one. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Varric." The inhabitant then falls silent, not because it is bored or does not wish to speak with you anymore, it is merely taking time to get to know you as much as it can with the shell of the egg in the way.
Image - The Spilled Ink Egg to Sunaia

"Hello, little dreamer. I'm Sunaia," she murmured, "but my family calls me Sunny. You'll be free soon to tell us your name, I think. Won't that be fine?"

Upon the first touch of hand on shell there is a little bolt of electricty. The inhabitant in this shell is a lively one, that is for sure. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to shock you. Are you alright? Yes, yes, I would very much like to be out of this shell. I mean, it's alright, but I bet out there is so much better." You get the feeling that this little egg would like to complain more about wanting out, but it is too proud to really complain more.

Unlike your soft greeting, the response you get back from swirl patterened egg is one of excitement. "Hello there! You're a quiet one aren't you? That's alright. You don't have to be talkative. I can talk for us both." A small pause of draconic laughter comes from the egg. "In fact I can probably talk too much. Is it nice out there? I'm afraid I can't see much more than what's on this side of my shell."

"Hello little one,"

As soon as your hand lands on the softly swirled surface of the egg it feels as though the inhabitant is trying its best to get to know you better. There are so many questions to be asked but how does one pick just one to ask first? Especially when it wanted to know everything. As if knowing it has come on a little strong, it pulls back quiet. "Sorry, it's just so exciting to have people talk to you. How are you doing?"

"Why am I so nervous to touch you? You are just an egg...You are going to change someone's life. Maybe mine...That's too big of a responsibility for such a little thing..."

"There there. No need to cry little one." An out pouring of warmth and acceptance wraps around you like a blanket. "Change isn't always bad, you know. I'm certainly up for the challenge and responsibility that will come after I hatch. Until then I am quite content to remain in my shell on the hot sands. You shouldn't be nervous. I'm not nervous. So come on, put on a chipper face and try not to worry so much."

"You have such a pretty shell," he murmured, letting his hand run across the markings. "We're all waiting for you to break out of it and show us how pretty you are."

The first response you get from this egg is as if it is rolling its eyes at you. "Do you expect me to do a song and dance number as well? Perhaps I should start practicing in here....oh wait, that's right. I'm a little cramped in here to do more than wiggle my toes and nose. I tell you what. If I come out dancing, will you join me?" This inhabitant obviously has a bit of bite to it and a droll sense of humor.

"I can't wait to see what you look like," she whispered. "I bet you're interesting, in there."

"Actually, what I am is rather crammed in here. It is sweet of you to say that though." The inhabitant studies you closely, though you can tell that it is trying to do so without giving away too much of itself. It isn't that it is shy or timid, in fact you can feel the strength of character in the shell, but it is obvious that it doesn't wish to be scrutinized nearly as much as it wants to study you.

"You must be eager to greet the world little one, and you will soon enough."

"I am eager for that yes, but I wonder if the world is ready to meet me." The inhabitant inside mused out loud. For a moment it hums silently to itself as it thinks of its entrance into the world. It has to be perfect, just perfect, so the person it picks knows exactly how special they are that they have decided to impress to them. Would it pick you? Well, only it knows who it is going to choose and that juicy little secret is all for itself to enjoy right now.

The shock was startling, that was no lie. On those precious occasions where Sunny had the opportunity to lay hand to shell, she'd never felt such a jolt before. Surprised, she made a sound somewhere between a gasp and a squeak, then quickly glanced around to see if anyone had noticed-- after all, at this touching, there was a chance Mar'lus might attend. Faranth forbid he saw her behaving like a little girl with no experience under her belt. Her cheeks prickled at the thought, the heat-flush of the sands joined by the shimmer of embarrassment.

But the egg's occupant had apologized and it would be rude not to acknowledge it. Sunaia forced a smile to her lips (while tucking her hands safe under her arms). "It's alright, it happens and I'm fine. No harm done, my word on it. I understand your enthusiasm. Just a little more patience and you'll have the whole world at your feet."

She paused.

"At your paws," the young woman corrected herself. It was as important to be correct as it was to be polite, after all. "Others are going to come see you in a moment. So you'll be ready." And hopefully prepared not to zap them.

After she prepared this little kindness for her fellow candidates, she stepped back from the egg. She tried to hide her wariness of further shocking-- they were so sensitive, dragons, and she didn't want to upset the little one even before it hatched-- as she moved towards others in the clutch. This was such a rare chance, she should make certain she moved through as many of the eggs as she could; if her dragon was here, she didn't want to risk it thinking it couldn't find her.

Sunaia came to the Through the Leaves Egg. There was little to distinguish it from the others. Indeed, in comparison to some of the larger or brighter eggs on the sands, it risked fading into the background. But it's earthy palette was soothing, and the quiet green which decorated its side reminded her of the jade in her jewelry box. So she paused there and let her fingertips graze the surface. "You look like autumn in the Telgari ranges."

Aranrod squirmed, almost feeling herself the compression that the dragonet was feeling. It was a large egg, true, but didn't the hatchlings always seem to grow to fill the entire egg? Regardless of the dragonet's color, it was large enough that it already felt cramped in the egg, and she could sympathize. She loved having a safe place to live, where she would be permanently welcome, and her craft would provide that if she didn't Impress and get it here at the Weyr. But sometimes she missed being able to see so much of Pern.

"After you hatch," she whispered, "You'll be able to stretch out, and then in a turn or so, you'll be able to stretch your wings, and not even the Weyr will be able to keep you enclosed." Then she moved on, because there were nineteen more eggs to touch.

The Spring has Sprung egg was pretty, and she didn't see anyone else touching it, so she slipped up next to it, excited as she reached out to trail fingertips across the shell. It looked sort of like new leafbuds growing on pale yellow bark, certainly a pretty collection of colors, and she delicately tried to spread her hand over one larger burst of green spots. "I bet you're feeling pretty cramped in there, too," she said softly. "I wonder if you are all as excited to meet us as we are to meet you?"

The dragonet's mind felt sharp, almost cutting, and Varren had to stop himself from jerking his hand away. Had he somehow managed to offend another unhatched dragon just by touching its shell? He pulled his hand away carefully, "It wasn't meant to be an insult," he said, quietly but a little testily, back to the egg. "We're just all really eager to see you and your siblings hatch." He had no doubt that the dragon would find a good match for that sharpness, he could think of several riders just as dry and cutting. And to be fair, maybe the dragonet was just grumpy because it wanted OUT.

He had off days, when he was inclined to be grumpy, too. Just...he hoped that if HIS dragon was inside that shell, then on good days it was a little softer and gentler. Which egg next?

The Summer Beach Egg looked so soothing. Dark brown spots on a light brown background. Maybe like sand that has almost dried out? He imagined for a moment that he would feel clumps of wet sand clinging to the shell when he touched it, but was unsurprised by the smoothness of the shell. "Are you calmer than your sibling?" he murmured. "Your shell makes me think of a lazy summer rest-day with no responsibilities," he continued, "but you probably don't look much like your shell, and even how you look INSIDE the shell doesn't say much about your personality."
