Taking a Chance - Ember | Calibane

Even with the move to the South, Gathers are still a thing to look forward to, though in the Walled Hold they appear to be called Festivals instead. Either way, Gathers and Festivals are a time of fun to enjoy when they come around.

Calibane had become a close friend of N'kili's, but in the time to follow since the pyriterider rescued her from her sorrows, N'kili had begun to feel other emotions and sensations at work, emotions and sensations she swore reflected in Calibane as well. However, her friend was a difficult one to read, enough for N'kili to sometimes doubt what she saw in the woman. But then a moment might happen, one that lasted a mere breath when fingers brushed together and eyes met in that telling glance enough to make the heart cease.

It was after such a moment that N'kili asked the forbidden, voicing the idea of whether Calibane would like to join her to the gather. The nature of her proposal remained vague, if only to spare N'kili the possible rejection if she outright asked Calibane with romantic intentions, yet when the pyriterider said yes, N'kili could not help but smile.

But was her attempt misplaced? N'kili tried not to think of such things the day she dressed for the Turns End gather. As she pinned her hair up, however, she thought back on all previous failures of romantic pursuits, and worried such an attempt might cause her to lose a friend. Darker thoughts entered into her mind, the worry that N'kili truly was misinterpreting the woman. As she smoothed out the last of her blue and gold gown, she began to fear that Calibane would recognise her attempts and reject her... at least until her mind got the better of her.

Callie knows me, and she knows where I stand in matters of... romance. But she said yes, even though she must know this is my attempt to court her...

Duke offered a trill of support while Omiimiith pressed back upon her rider. I like her and Arieth. Why wouldn't they like us too?

Eyes closed, and for a moment, N'kili thought about what Omiimiith said, and allowed her thoughts to wander over visions of the future, where the two of them enjoyed an evening of laughter, up to the moment when N'kili found the courage to ask Calibane to dance with her. The very dream of feeling Calibane so close, the gestures ones of intimacy and love rather than of simply friendship, was enough to make her bubble and warm with excitement before she calmed herself. And what if... no... N'kili would not dare think of such a thing, even if she quietly admitted if Calibane kissed her, she would not say no. A creature of touch, N'kili was always won over by the very feel of intimacy, even if at times she had let it get the better of her. Perhaps this time would be different.

With a final brush of her dress, N'kili slipped out of her apartment and made her way for Omiimiith, and as patiently as she could manage, she waited for Calibane and Arieth to appear.

Calibane wouldn't say that she was nervous, but she was uncertain of herself as she prepared. She wasn't good about these things, the more formal of occasions, and when she couldn't find anything that seemed fancy enough for what the situation might call for, she fell upon an old stand by, what - to her - seemed like a simple trouser and vest combination that had suited her just fine once or twice before. It matched some of the more darker golden tones of Arieth's hide, and so she supposed in a way she was representing her dragon by wearing it besides.

With her hair plaited and laced with a similarly colored set of ribbons, Calibane announced herself ready. She allowed her starlizard to attend with her, figuring since she wasn't going with jewelry adorning her body in any manner, having Persephone with her instead might be a decent enough option and besides, she'd be able to socialize with other lizards while at the Seahold. Arieth asked her if she was eager, rather than being nervous, and she had to admit that she was.

She just hoped that she didn't make a fool of herself in N'kili's company.

The pyrite snorted, doubting that she ever would or could, and helped her to his back before taking her to their destination, and once there, announced himself to his opal friend. It wouldn't be long before their riders were together, and then they would be able to curl up together while the two were in attendance with one another.

Calibane dismounted, Persephone took her place, and then the rider went in search of her friend, finding her rather quickly and feeling her heart quicken in her chest when she took notice of the woman. She lifted her fingers slightly and smiled, enjoying the sight of her as she approached.

Duke spotted the pyriterider first, and offered a whistle of excitement to the woman. Rather than wait for Calibane to approach, the mottled brown dropped from N'kili's shoulder and glided over to the dark and handsome woman, and even encircled her playfully.

The very sight of the woman surprised N'kili, for she had not anticipated her to dress in a manner that might compliment N'kili's own attire. It also suited her so perfectly, the tones mirroring Arieth in a way that suited the pyriterider. The plait of her air, the look in her eyes, the slightest and rarest of smiles given to N'kili's alone... the opalrider's own smile broadened into a full grin before she stepped towards Calibane. She could wait no longer, and wanted nothing more than at least appreciate her friend closer than at the distance they stood.

"You look wonderful," she began as she took detailed note of the ruffles along the woman's chest just before the vest cinched about her torso where it buttoned together. Dark eyes looked up to Calibane, enjoying the way her hazel eyes matched her own...

A blush followed when N'kili suddenly realised she was staring. Did she hug her? Did she dare kiss her cheek? Did she hold her hand? So out of practice, N'kili had not the faintest idea of what to do with herself or what to say. It was a rare moment for a woman whose entire life was about the grace of diplomacy. Words were so easy to find with strangers, especially when the goal was to cajole them and reduce their anger, all while withhold her true nature and honest sentiments. With Calibane, however, N'kili wanted to be real with her, to let Calibane see her for who she was rather than see the person she played in a day to day basis. Calibane deserved more than feigned niceties and half truths from N'kili, though that now, for a second time, left N'kili in a rare state of vulnerability in Calibane's company.
