Archery Competition [Evanoria Gather 2045]

Even with the move to the South, Gathers are still a thing to look forward to, though in the Walled Hold they appear to be called Festivals instead. Either way, Gathers and Festivals are a time of fun to enjoy when they come around.

Archery Competition
~Muse Music~
Those with some skill with the bow gather for this competition. There will be 3 rounds and each round will be harder than the next. If any competitor misses hitting the target, they are disqualified from moving on to the next round. The winner will be the one to hit closest to the bulls eye in the final round. If a tie should happen, the two competitors will shoot again and again, until one shoots the best shot.

The rules:
Arrows and bows provided have to be use
You must stand at the marker and cannot move off of it
Cheaters will be disqualified

The prizes:
1st place: 100 marks
2nd place: 60 marks
Participation: 10 marks

Competitors:
Natara (Weapon's Master - Bows & Swords)
L'van (Lessa's Gaze)
Ay'li (Longbow & Marksmen)
Rhianwen

OOC Note: Please sign up via role play. Please be sure to list any talents and abilities your character may have that pertains to archery. These will be taken into account. The participants will be randomized and whoever is last will be dropped from the competition. The last round will be done a little differently. Whoever makes it to the last round will have a d20 rolled to see who receives the highest number. They will be the Grand Champion. Again, any abilities will be taken into consideration.

Natara had already seen the rules for the sword tournament, and was unsurprised that she would be using a bow and arrows provided for competitors, rather than her own. If it didn’t keep her from entering the sword tournament, it wouldn’t interfere in this one either.

She supposed there was room to argue that the skill involved in choosing or making a good weapon, and maintaining it, deserved testing just as much as the skill of using it. However, she had to admit that people with more marks would always be able to pay someone to provide a good sword or bow, so it was likely that the tournaments would then have favored the wealthy. Swordwork probably did anyway, since the participants would need to have learned with a decent weapon.

But archery? That was a sport or skill that the poor relied on more than the rich. Lord Holders never had to worry where their next meal was coming from. Simple farmers needed to be able to take down scavengers after their herds or the beast providing their family’s dinner.

She sort of suspected that she would do better in the archery tournament than the sword. Between the use of unfamiliar weaponry, and the fact that she might minutely hesitate because she faced live opponent that she were not her enemies?

Shooting an inanimate target would definitely be easier for her. Technically, her skill with the two weapons was equal, and she did not hesitate when facing actual threats. But the lack of concern about injuring anyone would make her just a little bit calmer with the bow.

{OOC: Natara has weapon mastery, and her two weapons are the sword and bow}

L'van supposed his skills with the bow weren't at their sharpest, but in his youth he had been a decent marksman. He didn't think it would hurt to see just how rusty he'd gotten the past couple of Turns since he'd stopped practicing on a near daily basis.

It would be shameful if it had dropped anywhere near where he suspected it had, though he hoped it wasn't too bad. When he found out they wouldn't be able to use their own equipment, he was actually fine with that, seeing as how he didn't have any of his own with him. Most of what he did have was at home in a box somewhere, and then he winced. He was going to have to get everything out when he got home, polish the wood, tighten the strings, test it out, if not for anything than to make sure he remained physically capable in at least one weapon.

Liking the idea, he nodded to himself as he signed himself up for the competition, and he felt - and heard - approval coming from Zenjarth as well. It was always a nice thing to know that he was doing something the big bronze approved off. It meant even more when he and his dragon started to have a light conversation about why it mattered that they supported one another.

ooc: L'van has Lessa's Gaze attached to him.

The brownrider would never in a million Turns pass up any opportunity to show off her archery skills, especially in a competition. Shards, her prowess had actually won her and Norieth a chance to fly Walled's Maiden Queen, even if Behemoths' size had won on that day. What had been just a hobby, a means to keep herself sane in the confines of Ista, had turned into a pride and talent she wasn't afraid to show off from time to time. Her skills with a bow were nearly outmatched, and she enjoyed testing herself and those around her to see how good they all were, and who would rise to the occasion of besting her.

So it was that she approached the range with a confidence and a sway in her steps. A wry smile lifted her lips as she stepped up to the table, eager to sign her name and gave a glance around her at the competition. There was the slightest quirk of her brow at the familiar face nearby before she penned her name in a very sure hand. Smiling again at the officiants, she was even so bold as to wink at the pretty woman who sat on the other side of the table. With that, she was striding away, moving to inspect the bows and arrows they were to use, but couldn't help but jape at the bronzerider standing nearby.

"So, old man, you think you got what it takes?" Ay'li jested as she brushed past behind the man, casting a glance over her shoulder at L'van with a wry and cocky smile. She gently picked up one of the bows, testing it's weight in her hand and tugging lightly on the string for the pull. "We could always make it a bit more interesting too. Loser buys the winner a drink?" The brownrider continued, as the grin widened as she tossed the bow toward L'van suddenly, perhaps hoping to catch him off guard.

He wasn't the least bit surprised to see Ay'li there. His friend could always be counted on to make an appearance at any gather or event, and given that this was an archery competition, it was a given that she would have been in attendance in some capacity. L'van smiled and reached out, catching the bow she tossed his way, senses sharp despite his age. "Old man is it?" He chuckled and tested the bow out, lifted it to check on the sight which he clicked his tongue to in approval. "That would be an accurate assessment actually."

Now that he had what he'd be using for the competition in hand, which was no thanks to his friend - and he tipped his head towards her in thanks - he started to look it over carefully out of habit for any hint of flaw or fracture. "As for that drink, my dear Lady, we can make a bet that loser buys the winner something refreshing, but we both know that I'm going to end up buying you something regardless. We need to up the ante just a bit. Unless," and he started to smirk, the look on his face taking on a teasing hint that he wouldn't be able to hide even if he tried. "You happen to be afraid."

The woman's lips curled with a hint of satisfaction as the bronzerider caught the bow deftly, giving it a look over with a keen eye, while agreeing that perhaps he was a bit aged now. Though it seemed the old man hadn't lost any of his spunk either, and Ay'li couldn't help but chuckle softly at his retort of having to buy her something regardless. L'van had seen her more than once at the archery range back home, or sitting astride Norieth with bow in hand, so it was no surprise that the man would confess to her so soon.

However, he did surprise her a little with his comeback and her brow raised in another quirk for the bronzerider. "Me? Afraid?" The femme brownrider scoffed playfully, the tease in his voice fully returned in her own. "You sir, obviously haven't met me before, and I am no Lady." The woman quipped back, moving back to the rack of bows to select her own this time, giving it a similar look as her friend was for any defaults. "What was it you had in mind then? You have me curious just what you're going to owe me now." Ay'li said with a cocky smile for the bronzerider, intending to make sure he would regret upping that ante from just a drink.

Oh, he knew he might be eating his words later. There was a very big chance that he would, in fact. But it was so much fun being able to tease his friend back and forth - Ay'li always gave as good as she got, and never held back her punches, which made it all the more enjoyable! So try as he might, he couldn't hold back his grin when she retorted to his quips, and that was exactly how he wanted it to be. It wouldn't have been right if it had gone any other way. Feeling content, he started to consider all the different ways that he could her instead of drinks, and two different things came to mind.

"Well, I'll tell you what, Dear Lady," that was that. Her special name from him was going to be "Dear Lady" until she put her foot down and said otherwise. After all, she called him "Old Man" and it was fitting, was it not? "My daughter, Lulara, just sent me a two hundred Turn old bottle of Benden. If you best me, I'll give you two things - that bottle of Benden, and I'll bathe Norieth for you for a sevenday, complete with oiling using the oil of the gentleman's choice."

Rhianwen frowned as the archery competitions rules were explained to her. It would take no time whatsoever to return to the Weyr to grab her bow, even with Lennoth bound egg-heavy to the Weyr--6 coughs between with one of the riders on ferry duty in total and the minute it took to run into her apartment to grab it--but that was not an option she was being given. It made sense, of course. It let the archery competition run with equal equipment, putting the test solely between the skill of the participants and their ability to adapt to an unfamiliar bow. It probably also helped sell the wares of whichever woodcrafter had made them and Rhianwen smirked at the marketing strategy. Her own bow had been made by a master from wood from the forest surrounding her home hold, whereas these were likely made by journeymen using local wood.

Rhianwen signed up all the same. It was true that she was more familiar with her own instrument--its feel, the weight of its string, its physical weight--but only a craven would blame their inability to perform solely on an unfamiliar instrument. Rhianwen walked over to the bows, testing the flexibility of the limbs and the bow strings' weights to find something she was most comfortable with. At the very least, those who ran the competition appeared to know enough to offer a few different weights. Rhianwen frowned again at the simple style compared to her recurve back home, but made her selection all the same. She made sure to note the stamp on the bow, marking its maker.

It was only then that Rhianwen allowed herself to study her opponents and caught sight of Ay'li bantering with L'van. From the looks and sounds of it they were betting between themselves. She smirked and left them to it, not interested in encroaching on or being pulled into that particular brand of fun. Instead, she grabbed a few arrows and set herself up at one of the practice ranges to warm herself up and acclimatize her arm to the bow.

{Rhianwen has nought on her side but training and practice}

Natara couldn’t say for sure what it was. She had already exerted herself enough to feel very conscious of her body, but was not in any way tired. In fact, she was energized. However, she seemed to have lost her focus. Something was a tiny bit wrong when she picked up the bow. Whether it was her stance, the unfamiliarity of the weapon, or something completely unrelated, it didn’t really matter.

Her shot went wide on the first round. Frankly, she couldn’t explain it, and she was a bit disappointed in herself. It wasn’t like the sword bouts, where the back and forth of the match meant that she got excited even when she lost. She was just out, and she actually preferred bows to swords.

She shook her head, sighing a bit. She was usually much better than this, but no one was perfect. At least she had done fairly well with the sword, though she would really have been happier with the opposite results.
