Taking On More Responsibility [Tag: Parker/Kisle]

With the establishment of the Pearlriders and the Atrician Glint, a home along the coast for the Pearls and their riders needed to be made. Over time, the original beach camp was transformed from a series of tents into buildings and homes. While some of the Flotilla is being built, the primary areas such as Dining Hall, barracks for candidates, and other necessities have been completed. A series of docks with homes attached are still being built for future Pearlriders in hopes their numbers will grow, and each home is fitted with necessities as well as a personal boat that can be used for some water travel as well as living out of for relatively short periods of time.

While Dimitri could not see the nod of Kisle's head, he took the brief silence to mean that the other Pearl rider just didnt have anything to say, or was trying to think of something to say. It was kind of one of those things where you probably didnt know what to say. The young man had changed his mind once he got here, without knowing exactly what he was getting into, or what he wanted to do, and now, here he was with a Pearl to call his own, and a beautiful one at that. Although it had only been but a moment, it felt like an eternity before Kisle's voice reach this ears once more. Thankfully, the leader of the Flotilla could not see his face at the moment, since there was a blush creeping into it. Now, normally, the young man would not normally blush at a compliment, but since it was coming from the leader, he couldn't help it. Finally he managed to find it voice, "Thank you, Im just glad to help in any way I can."

Finally, as Kisle spoke again, he was able to take his mind off of those previous thoughts, and begin to get the blush to go away. Nodding, so that Kisle at least knew he had heard him, Dimitri couldn't help but give a soft sigh of relief. Good, it seemed as though Kisle was not going to question him any further about that. Maybe eventually he would be able to talk to people about this someday, but today was not that day, and he wasn't quiet sure if or when that day would actually ever come.

Pushing those thoughts aside, he forced himself to concentrate on what the other man was saying. These were things he was most certainly going to needed to know, right? The thought of the squalls, and big waves did honestly scare him, but he knew it was just part of being a Pearl rider now, so he decided pretty quickly that he was not going to mention anything about his fears to Kisle. He would get over them in time, after he’d done this more than once. It would become like second nature to him.

Nodding he said, ”I agree sir. I hope we never have to deal with them either.” Without realizing it, the the young Pearling and rider had sped up and were now getting a little to far in front of the ship. Quickly, Dimitri slowed them down, but a frown came to his features and he looked back at the ship once more, wondering if they had sped up, or if the ship itself had slowed down. Dark eyes glanced at Kisle and he asked, ”Is it normal for the ship to slow down? Or did we just speed up? I can’t really tell. It didn’t seem like we had sped up all that much.”

"Thank you, I'm just glad to help in any way I can."

"Of course. Truthfully, the Flotilla still is in need of all the help it can get. We've come a long way in these short few turns but we still have a long ways to go in proving our worth to the rest of Pern. While there are obvious things the Pearls are good at, like escorting fleets, I feel like there is a lot we can offer." Kisle wasn't really a talker but once on the topic of the Flotilla and what the pearls could do...well, he could go on for a while. Having come from nothing to now be the leader of something great he couldn't help but want to do everything possible to see the Flotilla flourish.

”I agree sir. I hope we never have to deal with them either.”

"Indeed, though it is something we should train for in case it ever does happen. Further out to sea they are not as devastating, but a wave such as that would ruin the coastline...meaning any ships docked at shore would be in danger." It was better to be prepared for such things even if none of them ever encountered one in their lifetimes. If one were to happen then no doubt the pearls would be tantamount in helping with the recovery process.

”Is it normal for the ship to slow down? Or did we just speed up? I can’t really tell. It didn’t seem like we had sped up all that much.”

Kisle and Cetovas both turned to look behind them at the ship. "Something to keep in mind...while we are on creatures that propel themselves at whatever speed they wish...ships are bound by the wind. The wind has died down some so it's very possible that they have slowed because of that." He explained. Any moment he could teach one of the pearlings something he would. "However, how about you go back there and check to make sure that everything is alright. There is no such thing as being too cautious while out on the ocean."

As he listened to Kisle, Dimitri could not help but feel a deep sense of pride as they spoke about rhe Flotilla. It seemed as though he had been part of it his whole life, even though he knew he hadn’t been. Sure, he wanted to make a difference, and that was mostly because he kind of felt obligated to, more than he probably should. Since he had Impressed, everyone knew his Pearl because of his very uncommon color, and that made the young man out more pressure on himself, and probably on his bonded as well, even though he wasn’t meaning to. It was that part of him that wanted to fit in and once again feel like he was a part of something. Not that he was trying to forget his family, but, just, kind of forget his past. Honestly, so far, he had a feeling he might actually be able to get it done.

Nodding, Dimitri found himself listening eagerly so that he would know what to do if that ever really happened. A thought popped into his mind, and it seemed as though he hadn’t even fully processed it. "Have you been caught out in a storm? What do you do if you are? Is there a way to protect yourself from it?" While he was a bit embarrassed that he was asking all of these questions, at the same time, he honestly felt that it would probably be good to know the answers ahead of time. If he knew how to prepare, then it stood to reason that he would never really be caught off guard, and isn't that something that Kisle had already told him? Dont let yourself get complacent or caught off guard?

Pushing those thoughts to the back of his mind, as the older man spoke once again. For a moment he thought, before asking his Pearl to slow down and make the turn to go back towards the ship. The young man could suddenly feel his heart pounding. Why had he suddenly nervous? He didnt even know if there was anything to be nervous about yet. Once he reached the ship, he saw the Captain, and a small sigh of relief escaped him. The two of them spoke for a few moments, and then Dimitri returned to where KIsle was. "You were right, it was just the wing and such. Everything seems fine."

"Have you been caught out in a storm? What do you do if you are? Is there a way to protect yourself from it?"

"Aye," Kisle answered as he took the canteen off of Cetovas and took a drink before elaborating. "I've been caught out in a storm on a ship and with Cetovas." For a moment he fell silent as he thought about those harrowing times. "I'll be honest with you. It was more terrifying being on the ship in the storm than with Cetovas. On a ship, all you can do is help baton down the hatches, tie a rope around your waist, and hope the ship can ride it out." They'd lost a man in the first storm he'd ever been caught in.

"Being caught out in the storm with Cetovas was not as bad. Any of the larger waves I simply held my breath and she took us under it. It wasn't a picnic, to be sure, but less terrifying." Kisle explained. Being bonded to a water creature made the ocean far less dangerous to a land animal such as himself. "This is why I stress the breathing lesson that you all go through. It is important to train your lungs so they can reach their full capacity. The longer you can hold your breath, the better." Those lessons were ones he did not allow pearlings to skip. If they had to miss it...then they had to make it up.

"You were right, it was just the wing and such. Everything seems fine."

He and Cetovas watched as the two of them moved back to the ship to speak with the captain. It didn't take them long to return and report. "Good. Learning to talk easily with the captains is important." The wind began to pick up again which made him smile. "If the wind stays like this we should get there in no time." He commented.

While it did not completely shock Dimitri to hear that the Flotilla leader had been caught in a storm, it was a little bit of a surprise. He honestly hadn’t expected the answer to be yes, but it seemed as though he and Cetovas had been able to get through it. Wait just a moment, had Kisle really just said that he had been caught out in storms twice? As the young man thought about it, he found himself hoping that if he ever got caught in one, he was on a boat. To him, it just seemed as though the boat would be able to stand it a little better than a young inexperienced Pearl. Once he heard Kisle’s point of view on it, he guessed maybe once his Pearl was older, he would probably feel like that. ”I can see how it would feel safer on your Pearl, although I’m not sure about one as inexperienced as Keahavis. Hopefully I won’t really have to find out for quiet a while.”

Listening to the slightly older man, he nodded in understanding. It did seem to stand to reason that being bonded to a water animal would have its perks in situations like these. Now he truly understood why they needed to have those breathing lessons, as Kisle was explaining. Honestly, Dimitri had hated those lessons more than anything. Blushing slightly he said, ”Well, I guess I have to take back me saying that I hate them. I see now why we needed to have them.”

Nodding, he couldn’t help but already agree with his leader. Speaking with the Captain would come in handy. Although, unfortunately, he knew that not all captains would be as easy to talk to, or as nice. He would just have to learn to deal with the different types. While Dimitri did not think he was the best or anything, he figured adapting to the different types would not be easy, but wouldn’t be all that hard either. It would take a little bit, but he was sure he would get the hangnail of it sooner rather than later.

At the mention of the wind Dimitri glanced around. ”I guess I didn’t notice that the wind was up. Should be paying more attention to that I’m assuming.”

”I can see how it would feel safer on your Pearl, although I’m not sure about one as inexperienced as Keahavis. Hopefully I won’t really have to find out for quiet a while.”

"Well, for one, a wave isn't going to hit a pearl so hard that they literally come apart around you," Kisle stated in a way of trying to make a joke, albeit a bit of a macabre one. He'd heard horror stories about how some sailors had been injured thanks to masts and other pieces of ship breaking and hitting them. "One of the other pearlings, Car'vis, he used to be a sailor. Not sure if you've noticed, but when he's out of the water he walks with a cane. He was injured in a bad storm. The mast came down on him, broke his leg, he's never been able to walk right since. So yeah...much safer to be on a pearl. The main thing to remember though, no matter what is to remain calm."

”Well, I guess I have to take back me saying that I hate them. I see now why we needed to have them.”

Kisle wasn't surprised to hear he hated them. They weren't exactly one of the favorite lessons that the pearlings had to do, but it was one of the most important. "That's why I stress them so much. I know how important they are." Kisle added. It was odd to think that his decisions affected so many lives now, but that was why he took his position so seriously. The Flotilla had a long way to go, but he was determined to make sure they had a positive impact.

”I guess I didn’t notice that the wind was up. Should be paying more attention to that I’m assuming.”

"You would be correct, Dmitri." Kisle commented and then paused a moment to feel the wind himself. It was starting to pick up quite a bit. "You feel how the wind is picking up now? We'll want to keep our eyes open. Just in case this wind turns into something else.

Dimitri could not help but chuckle to himself, at least he hoped it was only to himself, as he listened to what his superior said. Yes, he guessed that amiable did have a valid point. Pearls would most certainly not break as easy as a wooden ship would. All ships WERE made out of wood, right? Kisle spoke once again and the young man found his attention turned back towards his leader. A frown came to his face, along with a bit of a shocked look as he took in the story he was being told. So things like that really did happen huh? While Dimitri felt bad for this Car’vis, he couldn’t help but find himself wishing that it never happened to him. As he listened, he found out that he knew exactly who Kisle was talking about. Well, not personally anyway, but he had seen him around the Weyr, and it had been Kisle talking about how he had never been able to walk right again after the accident, that Dimitri remembered seeing a man like that around the Flotilla. Once the slightly older man was done speaking, Dimitri nodded.”Stay calm, I bet that is easier said than done, but I think I can manage it.” Of course he knew it wouldn’t be easy, and he wouldn’t know until he was actually in that situation.

For a moment, Dimitri found himself wondering if Kisle had not liked that part of the training either. While he hadn’t liked it, he didn’t know how any of the other Pearlings hadn’t liked it. Surely he hadn’t been the only one, right? Listening to Kisle, the younger man knew why those classes were important, he still could not stop himself from disliking them. Nodding he said, ”I always thought it was some type of over reaction, why those classes got pushed so hard. But now, being out here, I have a bit lore of an appreciation for it.”

As the two continued to talk, a frown came to the dark haired young man’s face. Not that his leader was yelling at him, but he felt as though he should have known that, been more observant. Quietly, he listened, just making a mental note to do a little better next time.

Looking out ahead, dark eyes scanned the coastline and the skies quickly, not noticing anything worth mentioning. The wind was still up, and he would only say something if it got any worse. He didn’t really know what they would do if it did, but he had to trust that Kisle knew exactly what he was talking about.

Every couple minutes he would let his eyes wander once again checking everything over once more. ”Well, I’m assuming it is a good thing that the wind isn’t getting any worse, right?”

”Stay calm, I bet that is easier said than done, but I think I can manage it.”

"Well...yes, but then again...most things in life are easier said than done. Just don't panic and you should be fine." Kisle said, though he was confident enough in Dimitri's abilities. Honestly, while he doubted most other people's abilities to function as proper human beings, his trust for his fellow pearlriders were exponentially higher. That was mainly due to the fact that he didn't believe that the pearls would bond to someone who didn't have the ability to keep a calm head.

”I always thought it was some type of over reaction, why those classes got pushed so hard. But now, being out here, I have a bit lore of an appreciation for it.”

"Being the first ones to do...well, what we are...that means that we have to lay the foundation for future pearls and their riders who decide to make the Flotilla their home." He began. Perhaps he was being a bit too much...teacher on this voyage, but there was worst ways to pass the time. "Everything we decide on, from patrol routes to lessons taught, are all weighed and considered for what they will do in the future." He paused for a moment before adding, "Basically, what I am saying...nothing we have you do is done arbitrarily or is taken more serious than is necessary."

”Well, I’m assuming it is a good thing that the wind isn’t getting any worse, right?”

"Right, no wind isn't a bad thing for us...now for the ships we're escorting...yes. They do not like it when the wind dies down completely. However, there is a way for us to help if that happens." Kisle explained and then had Cetovas get a little closer to him. "These bars are meant for more than just us to hold onto," He said as he gave the wide bar in front of him a pat. "Most of the ships we escort now have extra ropes that, should a need ever arise, our pearls can help to pull the ships. Either for safety reasons were merely because there isn't enough wind to get them where they are wanting to go."

While Dimitri knew enough to not let the compliment go to his head he also was very shocked that the leader himself had been the one to compliment him. Of course, he didn’t know much about Kisle, other than what little he had observed before he actually met the man. It was nice to know that the man had some kind of confidence in the new Pearl riders, but he found himself wondering if it was the riders, or the Pearls themselves that he had the confidence in. Deciding it didn’t matter either way, he chuckled softly and nodded. ”Your right, if this was easy, then anyone would be able to do it I guess.”

A thoughtful look come to the younger Pearl rider’s face as he listened to what Kisle said once more. Nodding in understanding, he couldn’t help but agree with the man. Unfortunately, he didn’t exactly understand everything that was being said, but he could get the gist of it, and it made as much sense as it probably ever would to him. At the same time, it gave him a sense of pride knowing that whatever they were all doing now would almost certainly impact the future generations. It made Dimitri want to do something to make sure he left his mark. But, he knew he had time for that, so he decided not to dwell on it for all that long.

Right, no wind was no big deal for the Pearls. Although he did find himself wondering if too much wind would be bad for the Pearls, but obviously it would be good for the ships. Before he could pose the question, Kisle was explaining about the bar. Dark eyes glanced at the one in front of him, studying it as he listened to the leader.

A thoughtful look came to his face as he looked at the bar once again. Then, looking at Kisle he said, ”Will the captain let us know if it gets to that point, or will we just kind of be expected to know that?” While he knew that he wouldn’t be just expected to know at this point in time, he figured as he got more accustomed to doing this, if he would just be expected to know when to tow them.

”Your right, if this was easy, then anyone would be able to do it I guess.”

Kisle fell silent for a moment, his lips thinning as he pressed them together. "I have two thoughts on that," he began. "One is that even if something is easy that doesn't mean just anyone can do it. Everyone has limitations, so easy depends on what a persons' limitations are. Second...I believe that anyone can do whatever they want if they put their minds to it, show a little willpower, and really dedicate themselves. Keeping in mind those limitations." Kisle had grown up being taught that he'd never amount to anything or do anything. He never wanted to treat anyone the way he'd been treated.

”Will the captain let us know if it gets to that point, or will we just kind of be expected to know that?”

"Generally yes. Usually at least one of the people on the ship have a firelizard they can reach us that way. Or they have horns they can use to catch our attention. Sometimes, though, we can suggest it to them first if it seems as though it might be faster." He answered him. The wind was only dying down more as they kept going. He looked back at the ship, but no one was trying to get their attention. The sails were severely slacking, though. At this rate it would take twice as long to get to where they were going.

"If you want...you can go ask the captain if they'd like us to pull for a bit. If he says yes, then wait till he hands you the ends of the ropes and then come back." Kisle suggested, though he really didn't think Dimitri would tell him he wouldn't do it.
