Taking On More Responsibility [Tag: Parker/Kisle]

With the establishment of the Pearlriders and the Atrician Glint, a home along the coast for the Pearls and their riders needed to be made. Over time, the original beach camp was transformed from a series of tents into buildings and homes. While some of the Flotilla is being built, the primary areas such as Dining Hall, barracks for candidates, and other necessities have been completed. A series of docks with homes attached are still being built for future Pearlriders in hopes their numbers will grow, and each home is fitted with necessities as well as a personal boat that can be used for some water travel as well as living out of for relatively short periods of time.

Sunlight crept into the room, and dark eyes closed even tighter, not wanting to open.Is it really morning already? the dark haired young man thought to himself? Grabbing a pillow, he quickly shoved it over his head, trying to block out the light. Today was the one day he didn't really have to get up, didn't have to do anything if he didn't want to, yet here he was, fighting to stay asleep. Groaning, he knew it was pretty much pointless at the moment. Once he was awake, there was usually nothing he could to to get back to sleep.

Kicking the covers off, he sat up and stretching, yawning ever so slightly. Well, now that he was up, he might as well start his day and see what he could accomplish today. Or maybe it would be a good day to just be a bit lazy. Actually, today would be a great day to just spend with Keahivis, and not have to go to lessons or anything like that. It would just be a fun day, just the two of them.

Just as he was sitting down to breakfast, a thought raced through his mind and made him freeze, almost dropping his utensils. Damn it! He was supposed to meet with Kisle to day to go on his first mission. Or well, train like he was on a mission, hence why he was going with the leader of the Flotilla.

Quickly he ate his food, hurrying now. It was a good thing he hadn't slept in any longer. As it stood right now, he still had enough time to get there without being late. Once he was done eating, he grabbed his clothes, making sure he looked presentable for this "mission." Calling to his rarely colored Pearl, the two of them hurriedly made their way to the Coast, where he knew Kisle would be waiting.

Once they reached the meeting spot, Dimitri looked around, spotting Kisle not too far away and smiled. "Well, at least we have a good day for for this."

Kisle'vis had never been one to waste daylight hours by sleeping in. Now that he was the Flotilla Leader, he had more reasons than ever to not sleep in. There were always plenty of things that needed his attention. The Flotilla was growing every month and while a part of him couldn't be more proud of what they had built here, a part of him missed the simplicity there had been when it was just him and other first pearlriders. With progress came more responsibilities and while there were times where Kisle'vis felt worn thin, he honestly had never been happier in his life. He had a purpose now, he had people that looked up to him, he had a real home.

Today his schedule was as busy as usual, but he was honestly looking forward to this day. The last clutch of pearlings was growing fast and already a turn old. That meant it was time for them to start going on escort missions with trading ships with a chaperone. While Kisle'vis didn't have to be one of those chaperone's he always liked to help with this particular lesson. He'd chosen Dimitri'vis and Keahivis to help on his first escort mission to the Fishing Village.

All ready, girl? Kisle'vis asked of his giant pearl as he finished his last cup of klah. Her gear was laying at his feet for now, but soon he would put them on her so they could head out to meet with the trading ship that was heading to the Fishing Village. Yes, I am ready. It will be good to leave the Flotilla for a bit. It has been some time since we have been to the Fishing Village. Cetovas answered as she swam closer to shore. Good, now we just wait for Dimitri'vis and Keahivis.

"Well, at least we have a good day for this."

They didn't have to wait long at least. "Yes, it is. Let's hope the weather stays on our side through the entire trip." Kisle'vis commented. Cetovas looked to her son and gave a loving croon. She still loved spending time with her babies, even though they were almost full grown adults now. "Alright, grab your gear and get Keahivis strapped up. We don't want to keep the ship's captain waiting too long." He ordered as he picked up his gear and moved into the water to put them on Cetovas. Kisle'vis chose to just wear a pair of swim trunks for missions like this.

For a moment, Dimitri couldn’t take his dark eyes off of the Flotilla Leader. Shock and awe were probably written all over his face, but he found that he didn’t care. It wasn’t embarrassing to him, at least not yet. Come to think of it he’d never really talked with Kisle’vis before, even though he saw him probably once a day, or at least every other day at least. After that moment, he quickly tried to remember that this was a mission and Kisle’vis was just any other man, well apart from being the leader. He didn’t seem to be the type to really yell at people, or anything like that. At least that was what he hoped for anyway.

Thinking a moment, he knew what the other man said was true. They were going out on the sea, anything could happen. Since this was his first time, the young man found part of himself hoping that the weather stayed like this, but the other part of him wondered if it might be better to have a few obstacles and then he would be more prepared for them next time?

Quickly he pushed those thoughts away as the other man told him to get his Pearl ready to go. Nodding he said, ”Right. I almost forgot we still have a timeframe to stick to.” Carrying his things to the water he walked in, glad that he had worn shorts and just a light shirt for this mission. Quickly he got the young Pearl all geared up he climbed up, giving the dark colored Pearl a pat as he waited for Kisle’vis to be ready. It didn’t take long and he smiled, a bit excitedly. ”So, how long will this mission take?”

”Right. I almost forgot we still have a timeframe to stick to.”

Kisle quickly got Cetovas geared up and climbed onto her back for now. Once they started really swimming, the saddles were not as important as the bar fixed to them that the riders held onto. "Never forget about timeframes. Especially when dealing with captains of the vessels we've sworn to protect." He reminded the pearling gently. Kisle was far too ingrained with his role as a leader to turn off the part of his brain that felt the need to constantly lead. Perhaps his worry of not being taken seriously since he was so young was what kept him constantly in that role.

”So, how long will this mission take?”

Cetovas began to take the lead towards the shipyard. "Depends on if we run into any complications. The fastest it could be would be a couple of days." Kisle explained. One of the stipulations for ships having pearl escorts was that they would store food and water for the riders, that way they didn't have to worry about lugging supplies around on them.

It didn't take long for them to find their ship. Kisle'vis and Cetovas swam up to the vessel and spoke with the captain before he returned to Dimitri and Keahivis. "We're going to take the lead for now. Try not to swim too far ahead of the vessel, but we don't want the wake of our waves to interfere too much either. Keep your eyes out on the horizon and the shore." He explained. "Alright, let's head out. You get to take point." One day they would do this alone, so it was important for the new pair to take the lead under their watchful eyes.

Dimitri settled himself onto Keahivis’ back and looked at the Leader and nodded. He would indeed remember that now. No more waking up late for him. Actually, the Pearling was quiet shocked at the gentle tone that Kisle used, but he found himself very appreciative of it. Unfortunately he knew that the leaders were sometimes a bit rough and short tempered because they just had to deal with so much. It was nice to know that so far, his leader didn’t seem to be like that.

It didn’t take them long, thankfully, and then they were on their way to the shop yard. The Pearling found himself hoping that they still had enough time to get there before the Captain wanted to leave. As Kisle’vis spoke though, he turned his attention back to him, nodding once again in understanding. A few days wasn’t so bad, and it would give him some bonding time with his Pearl, plus allow him a bit of time to pick Kisle’s brain if there was anything he wanted, or needed, to know. Hopefully this time there would not be any complications, but even if there were, the young man knew that with the help of the other man, he and Keahivis would get through it just fine.

After what seemed like forever, they finally arrived at the shipyard and Dimitri tried his best to wait patiently while Kisle talked to the Captain, but he was eager to be off. Once the older man came back, dark eyes turned to him, and everything else was pushed out of the young man’s mind as he took in the instructions he was being given.

Urging his Pearl on, the team took the lead, Kisle’s instructions ringing in his mind. It took Dimitri and Keahivis a little bit to figure out the exact distance that they should be from the ship to not be to far away, but not cause any interference from their wake either. Finally after they seemed to have it figured out, the young man allowed himself to breath a small sigh of relief, but he didn’t let himself relax either. Instead his dark eyes continued to scan the horizon and shore as he had been told.

Dimitri chuckled softly to himself and then said, ”You know, this is certainly harder than I imagined it would be, but I have no doubt eventually Keahivis and I will be able to do this just fine.”

Both Cetovas and Kisle'vis watched the young pair take point. It took a moment for them to get the distance right, but he nodded approval as they finally found the sweet spot. For a while, they rode the waves in silence. Every so often they would look behind them to make sure the fleet was keeping pace with them, but for the most part, these sorts of escorts missions were boring. At least that was a general hope, that they be boring.

”You know, this is certainly harder than I imagined it would be, but I have no doubt eventually Keahivis and I will be able to do this just fine.”

Kisle'vis strained from where they were behind the younger pair to hear his words, but he managed to make them out. "It'll become familiar before no time. Just remember to always be on your guard. That is the most important thing." He said in that same commanding tone.

Cetovas turned her giant head to look at her rider as they continued to swim on the surface of the water at a leisure pace to keep it so they didn't go too fast for the ships. You know...this is a good chance for you to get to know one of our riders better. The mother of monsters stated wisely. What for? Kisle asked. He wasn't exactly the easiest to get to know or along with, so fratiernizing with his fellow riders didn't happen often. You should. If you try, even a little, they will respect and listen to you more. Give it a shot. Ask him about himself. Cetovas explained. Kisle'vis sighed but asked her to move closer to the pair.

"So Dimitri'vis. Tell me a little bit about yourself. I don't often get the chance to speak with the pearlings one on one like this." Kisle'vis spoke above the wind and the waves to reach the other pearlrider's ears.

As they finally got settled in the correct spot, the young man could not stop himself from glancing over his shoulder at Kisle’vis. It seemed as though he had timed it right too, because he caught the nod of approval from the Leader. It made him grin like a fool for a moment before he regained his composure, so the other man hadn’t seen him. Unfortunately, it warned him a mental scold from his Pearling, but Dimitri’vis just let it roll off his shoulders for the time being.

As the commanding voice reached his ears over the sound of the waves, the younger man just nodded. Of course he wasn’t going to let his guard down. Ok, well he guessed he shouldn’t be thinking so big. No matter what, everyone dropped their guard at some point, whether they meant to or not. Finally he managed to say, ” Yes sir, I will make sure to remember that.”

For a few moments the young man stared ahead, looking at the coast line on either side of him, making sure there was nothing lurking there. As he finished his scan, he heard the water moving a bit differently and looked around, noticing that the other pair had gotten a little closer.

As he heard Kisle’s question, he couldn’t help but pause for a moment. What exactly did the man want to know about him? Shrugging to himself he said, ”Well, I’m from the High Reaches Hold, and before I impressed I was an Apprentice Runner, following my dad’s footsteps.”

Dimitri didn’t say anything else for the moment. He wasn’t the type to talk about himself. Besides, what if he did say something that he regretted, or told the wrong person something he shouldn’t have. Making that mistake was not something he wanted to do. He didn’t need anyone knowing what had brought him here. That was in the past, and he honestly intended to keep it there.

”Yes sir, I will make sure to remember that.”

"Good. Be sure that you do." Kisle replied back, though it was in a cheerful tone. He believed that Dimitri would remember to always keep his guard up. So far all of the pearlings had proven to be hard workers and welcomed assets to the Flotilla. It was exciting and a bit nerve-wracking to be so new, speaking about the Flotilla as a whole. They were finding their place on Pern and he really thought that they were going to make it a better place for their presence, it was simply finding that toe-hold that was important.

”Well, I’m from the High Reaches Hold, and before I impressed I was an Apprentice Runner, following my dad’s footsteps.”

Kisle tried to make sure to keep the grimace off of his face at the mention of following in his father's footsteps. His childhood had been awful. His foster family really could not have cared less about him and his well-being. Shards, he wasn't even sure if they had even noticed when he had left for good to become a sailor. Basically, thanks to his upbringing, he had turned out to be a rather bitter and hateful person. However, he realized that not everyone's relationships with their parents were that awful. It made him a bit jealous, but he didn't dwell on it.

"From runner to swimmer...ain't that something." Kisle commented with a smile. He really wasn't good at this small talk thing, but he was going to try. "High Reaches...I've never been there. How exactly did you wind up all the way south from there?" He was perfectly happy asking questions instead of answering them.

For a moment, the young man thought Kisle’vis was just being serious, but it quickly dawned on him that there was actually a bit of happiness or something behind his words. Had he impressed him by promising to always remember that? Shrugging, he just decided to be happy that the Leader seemed to be happy with what he was doing, and that’s all that should matter at the moment, wasn’t it? All Dimitri was really worried about was making sure that he and his Pearl were doing their part and pulling their weight around the Flotilla.

Luckily, Dimitri couldn’t see the look that came to the other man’s face. It would have made him wonder if he had said something wrong. Not that he would have understood even if he had seen the look and Kisle had told him why. He and his father had always had a good relationship, and while he knew there were people who didn’t have great relationship with their parents. But even if he knew that, he would never be able to ever actually understand what that was like.

He caught Kisle’s voice once more over the noise of the water and said, ”Well, it wasn’t something I even thought I would end up doing, but I have to admit, I’m very glad that this was how it turned out.”

The next thing the older man said made him pause for a moment, and he bit his bottom lip. What should he say? He didn’t really want to get into everything that had happened, and quiet honestly, he didn’t even want to hint at it. Finally he said, ”I just needed a change of scenery I think.”[\b] There, that should answer the man’s question.

Taking a breath he looked around again. "So, sir, is there anything in particular we are looking out for? Sea predators? Pirates?"

”Well, it wasn’t something I even thought I would end up doing, but I have to admit, I’m very glad that this was how it turned out.”

Kisle gave a nod of his head. He wasn't the sort of man to smile a lot. It was something Cetovas told him he needed to work on since never smiling could make him come off as rather cold and mean. Kisle had countered with the fact that he was just kind of cold and mean. "Unexpected or not, the Flotilla is lucky to have you with us." He stated. It was a compliment, but he had said it in a tone that was certainly more of a fact.

”I just needed a change of scenery I think.”

The Flotilla leader could understand that completely. His entire had been him needing a change of scenery from the misery that was his life. That's why he'd become a sailor...so he could get a change of scenery. "Yeah, I can understand that. Sometimes you just need a change." For all he was asking questions, Kisle had never been one to give information about himself freely, so unless Dmitri asked him questions he likely wouldn't supply anything.

"So, sir, is there anything in particular we are looking out for? Sea predators? Pirates?"

"There are other predators in the oceans, but considering we're riding on the top of the ocean's food chain, they aren't a top worry. Pirates, bandits, signs that a squall is coming, water sprouts, and also freak waves. All of those things we have to keep an eye out for. Squalls alone can be life-threatening and I hope we never have to worry about freak, giant waves caused by earthquakes." Kisle explained to him.
