Date: Gilgat 13, 2042
Time of Day: Past midnight, couple hours before sunrise
Weather: Clear, moonless, warm & moderately humid
Run Type: Open - Open to all

Another turn had come and gone for Andalusite pair Sterling and Serisk. Another turn of the usual life and nothing interesting to report since the hatching of Serisk’s last clutch. Spring came to the Weyr, bringing with it the warmth that turned the wet of the previous season into humidity. Sterling often had to fight with her hair in this humidity, but above all, with spring she knew it was time for Serisk to Run again, as she had Run on schedule for the past few turns.

It wasn’t hard to prepare really, not anymore, a Sterling had grown used to this part of being bonded to a female wher. While she wasn’t perfect at it, she was able to judge when Serisk would Run based on her behavior. As she steadily got worse, moodier yet needy, Sterling was able to judge it down to about a sevenday of when Serisk would Run. Like before, her Guard Captain was informed, and she was given permission to leave duties. For that sevenday she wasn’t put on full patrol, knowing Serisk wouldn’t cooperate as well as normal and not wanting the confusion of her potentially taking off in the middle of patrols. So they did other things until the night that Serisk refused to get up from her wallow after sundown.

Sterling told her Guard captain she wouldn’t be able to be in for duties that night, that Serisk was likely going to Run, given she was refusing to get up at the usual time. After that, Sterling had a few hours to kill, getting something to eat before going to her living space to clean up. And by clean up, she meant kicking clothes to be laundered over in a corner of the room and clearing the unslept side of her bed off of random items she tended to toss on there, leaving it on the table in a clutter. Sterling wasn’t known for being neat.

It was past midnight when Serisk finally rose, eyes opening in deep, whirling reds. Sterling pushed the door open with her foot, and let the wher pad out of the caverns and to the dark Weyr yard. It was darker tonight thanks to the lack of the moons, but one could still see the brightly colored hide of Serisk’s as she launched into the feeding pens and snatched a wherry up into her jaws with ease. She bled the beast, then took a second, slightly smaller wherry right as some of the males appeared. Some bled kills as well, others just waited on the other side of the fence for her. She snarled at them in warning.

Sterling prepared in her way, which wasn’t much since she had already cleaned up her space a little. She did take off any clothing she didn’t need though, leaving herself just in a loose shirt and undergarments, not seeing the need for anything else if anyone showed up. She also liked to drive tease the participants if they showed, and she couldn’t say she wasn’t against the idea of driving Carver nuts if he showed again. She then waited on the edge of her bed, sitting with her legs crossed at the knees, hands on the bed so she was leaning back slightly, waiting casually for anyone who decided to show up.

Serisk finished her second kill and at the very moment the body of the wherry hit the ground, she took off, giving another snarl to the males as she jumped the fence. Wings spread to let her glide over and farther from the fence to keep her distance from the males that had waited for her on the other side, and then her feet carried her powerfully across the yard as soon as claws touched the ground again. Her wings were folded tightly so she could focus on running, her first goal to make it out of the Yard.

At first it looked like she was making a beeline for south, toward the large lake south of the Weyr proper, but suddenly, she banked one way and instead found the path that led up the cliff to where the dragons slept. She bayed loudly as she climbed the incline upward, beckoning her suitors after her as she made it to the top of the cliff. Once there, she ran along its edge, disturbing some of the dragons from their slumbering, earning a few curious glances as she ran.

She wasn’t planning on bothering the dragons for long though, running through area for them, running around apartment buildings and pavilions, using some of the larger dragons to hide herself to make her males follow her by scent and lingering het trail, making them use their Pern given abilities to Chase her. Soon she led them away from the apartments and dragons from the other side, leading her males slowly north, into the more mountainous terrain north of the Weyr proper.

There would be nor forests and trees and underbrush to fight with today. Instead the males would have to fight boulders and inclines and rocks slipping underfoot. It would be hard to hide from them visually at times, only having some trees and shrubs to hide with, but she wanted the strongest this time, she wanted the one that could handle more unforgiving terrain.

(The Run has begun! So far I'm planning this to just be a single round Run. There is a small chance I might make it two rounds if things move quickly enough, but one is most likely. All male night whers are welcome, including NPCs.)

Carver and Bronze Carvesk
Carver had been keeping a close eye on his bronze, keeping a close on Serisk. The bronze never failed to chase after the lovely andalusite whenever she ran and honestly, Carver did not mind the prospect of getting to spend some more...intimate...time with her lovely handler. While he certainly enjoyed Sterling's company, both during a run and outside of it, he'd yet to seek anything more serious. For one, he wasn't sure if she was keen on the idea of being tied down in a committed relationship and for two after being married young, then only having one other serious relationship that didn't work out, he was rather enjoying being single for once in his life. That didn't mean the yellow-haired beauty wasn't the most on his mind.

He was working on sharpening his carving tools when Carvesk suddenly took off. Carver didn't have to ask where the bronze was going as he was sure that he was heading towards the feeding ground. He put away his tools, grabbed his cane, and then began to make his way to Sterling's place. Carvesk, in the mean time, was indeed headed towards the feeding grounds. He watched Serisk with longing as she blooded her own kills. The large bronze took one down for himself as well, to give him a little extra energy for chasing. He hadn't won her last time she ran, but this time he was more than determined.

Once Serisk took off, Carvesk took off after her. He was older now, though, and knew not to use all of his energy up in the beginning phase of the chase. Up the cliff they ran, passed the dragons whom he paid no heed to. The only thing that mattered right now was the glowing beauty in front of him. A few times she disappeared from view, but Carvesk had a good nose and he put it to use. Then, they were heading up north towards the more rocky region of the weyr's territory. He was no stranger to the more grueling terrain and knew he had the stamina to keep up. He hoped that she would notice that and chose him to be her mate this time.

While his bronze was off to chase, Carver made his way to Sterling. His leg was aching something fierce tonight, but he hoped an evening with Sterling would make up for it. He knocked politely at her door before he opened it. "Sterling? It's Carver. I..." He began to say something as his eyes finally landed on her and her attire...well, the little of it that there was. "Wow, you look....amazing. Here's to a good run." He didn't need to feel his bronze's longing to feel the same thing towards Sterling when she looked that way.

NPC Bronze Corosk
The trips to New Atricis were becoming so frequent that Corosk wasn't surprised when his handler announced they were putting in a transfer to the Weyr. He was still trying to adjust to the new settings, finding everything about the Weyr different from their original home back at Walled. He didn't think he'd like it, not with so many different whers to compete for territory with, but it soon became apparent that the bronze was attempting to adjust as well as he could. He was still young enough that he wasn't completely set in his ways, and that was enough to slowly ease him out of some of his more stubborn traits and into new ways of thinking. It certainly helped that he had plenty of females to take his mind off of the changes, both internally and externally.

One in particular caught his attention, if only because he was certain she was getting ready to run. He didn't recognize her, or the brilliant color that covered her. He asked his handler about her, and the young woman answered that the wher in question was called and andalusite, which was new to both of them. Interesting. The last female he'd chased at the Weyr had been an electrum, another new type of wher that he wasn't used to. The bronze snorted his thanks and started to make his way outside, watching and waiting for the moment when the call was put out that Serisk was ready to run. Once it became apparent that something was happening, he sprinted after her to the feeding pens to blood kill of his own. When the chase was on, he ran after, determination causing him to continue even when he stumbled.

His handler, meanwhile, decided she would go pay Sterling a little visit. There was no guarantee that her bronze would win, or even that she'd be a welcome presence in the other woman's company. But there was always that chance of catching the eye of someone else with a lost wher, and she was willing to take those chances. Fixing her hair, her clothes, she made her way quickly to the apartment, and bowed her head when she noticed that someone else was already there. No surprise, given how beautiful the blonde woman was. "Good run to you and Serisk." And hopefully, a good run to her and Corosk as well.

By now Jaray was getting quite good at knowing when a female was about to Run-or rather when Jarsk was getting ready to Chase. There were enough of them that the blue was bold enough to go after, even the larger females, Serisk and Rask. It seemed golds were the only ones Jarsk would not Chase, though there hadn't been a gold Run in Atricis since the one that led to Jarsk and his clutch. With Jaray's luck the blue would try, even if he faded before the gold was ready to make her choice.

Knowing the signs gave him some warning when his blue was about to go off after some wher or other though. Thus when Jarsk left to blood in preparation for yet another Run Jaray was ready, even hopeful. Might Halia join him for the Run? If not he had no interest in pursuing another but at least he might be able to burn up in that dangerous fire that always sparked between them. Now that there was nothing holding them back Jaray found no reason to deny it. Halia sparked feelings in him no other had managed and he happily drowned in them with her...especially during Runs, if she was amenable.

Jarsk ignored his lovestruck handler, focusing entirely on the task at hand. While he was blooding so were the other males and the prize they all sought to win over this night: Serisk. The andalusite had never chosen him yet but that didn't stop Jarsk from trying. As a blue he knew he would not be as desirable as the larger males but that didn't stop him either. He also knew whatever Serisk tried it would be harder for him than the others. He had more speed and agility than the larger ones, could squeeze into spaces their bulk stopped them from entering, but he also faded that much faster. To last until the end of a longer Run (so pretty much any that wasn't a green's Run) he needed to play smart and conserve his energy. No fancy tricks unless they were needed to deal with whatever challenges the female threw his way. Even during green Runs he needed to keep some strength in reserve for the end of the Run should he win. In a larger color's Run it was that much more important...if he Chased foolishly he would have nothing left even if it was his name called out at the end.

Snarls rang out as Serisk warned some of the bolder males. Jarsk only watched, amused. While Catching her early would be ideal, he had no such delusions. The andalusite would throw him off, with or without the other males' help and any chance of being her mate would vanish. Besides he saw little point in Catching a female before she was ready, before she was burning too hot to deny her choice mate any longer. And oh wasn't it fun when he was burning for her just as much? If that wasn't enough Jarsk rather liked the challenge. An easy Catch was not worth it. In the past Serisk has done well to make the males prove themselves and this time-

-the blue bounded forward, not bothering to think too hard about what might or might not be. In the moment all that mattered was keeping up with Serisk and not losing her, waiting for the moment she made her choice. Serisk was quick to prove why he should Chase her too, suddenly turning and bolting for the dragons' area. It was simple enough to follow her-until she got there. The andalusite was quick to use the dragons and their riders' apartments to hide herself from sight. Yet while she hid from their eyes she could not hide her warm scent from their noses, or wasn't bothering to. Either way Jarsk happily followed his nose when his eyes failed him, savoring the smell of the beauty he Chased.

Sadly that was the end of the easy part. Today Serisk was really pushing her suitors, in conditions that favored power and stamina over speed and agility. Boulders again, inclines, rocks that slid underfoot...arg. Jarsk hated such terrain. He had to waste so much precious energy to keep from slipping, not to mention fighting the pull of the incline that wanted to take him back down. Growling softly to himself Jarsk pushed on, looking for little tricks that would help him keep his footing and save his energy. If he could safely go around an obstacle he did, because he had a good grasp of his limits and just how much he could give if he wanted to be able to Catch the female at the end. She would not lose him easily, even making him Chase her over terrain that was not his specialty.

Sterling couldn't help her grin when Carver arrived, and it only became more devilish when he paused at her chosen state of dress this Run. She could often count on him to show up to her Runs, even if no one else did, and so it was fun to tease the man a little, flirt and make it all the harder to hold on until the end. However, another handler appeared, but Sterling didn't mind at all, even at the reveal the second handler was a woman. She was given a similar devilish smirk that Carver had been given, before she nodded in return to the handler's greeting.

"Indeed, let's all hope for a good Run," she answered, her tone suggesting she meant more than just the running of the whers outside as she shifted where she sat, crossing one leg over the other purposefully. "Make yourselves comfortable for now, I have a feeling Serisk is going to make this a long... long night." She couldn't help but tease.

Serisk, meanwhile, hardly teased her males, instead, she made them work. She wanted the weak and inexperienced to drop out first and quickly, and showed that in how she picked her paths. She lunged over boulders, ran up steep inclines, kicking rocks out behind her steps before making it to the top and taking off. She ran along crags in the mountainous terrain, daring to try and climb down but not choosing to and instead leaping over and gliding across, not trusting her bulk to be able to handle that sort of climbing well enough nor wishing to tire herself out too quickly either. She wanted to pick off the lesser males first, but she also wanted to enjoy this Run for as long as possible. To Run to the very ends of the South if she could.

At some point she led them over the river that fed into Atricis' waterfall and lake, leaping and gliding across, before landing on large rocks scattered among the rushing water, and jumping from stone to stone, carefully. She nearly slipped on the smooth, wet rocks a few times, but she made it across. A few of the lesser males tripped up on their way across, and she grumbled happily as she continued to lead them along, returning to the rocky terrain of the mountains, and leaving the river behind.

She continued these tricks, these tests and obstacles for her males, until only a few were left and she knew she couldn't hold on for much longer. Finally, she could no longer deny her need for a mate, or her need for rest coming quickly. She led them along a little longer, until she spotted what would be a good safe place for her and her chosen male in the distance. A cave, it appeared to be, or at least, an outcropping of rocks that seemed cave-like. As a wher her eyesight wasn't the best, but it would do well. So, one final surge forward was made, and a bugle to announce the end lifted into the night air.

Only one! Only Carvesk! She called triumphantly at her choice. The other two had put up a great effort, and had impressed her as well, but one had impressed her most of all this time, and that was the bronze she had denied in previous Runs, giving him his chance to sire her a strong clutch now. She led him into her hiding place she had picked out, leaving the other two remaining males to return to the Weyr with the energy they had left. Before sunrise, Serisk and Carvesk would return to the Weyr, but only just before it got too light for the whers to be outside, drawing it close but making the rest of the night well worth it for all involved.

Despite all the tricks and stunts that Serisk decided to put them through, Carvesk continued to keep up with her. He was bound and determined this time to be the one worthy of her and be the one that would sire her next clutch. The large bronze could almost feel it in his bones which made him push himself to try harder to win her affections. Those actions pulled off, though, and an excited trumpet was given as Serisk called for him to catch her. The bronze followed her into her secret spot where the two would remain until they had to return to the weyr.

Carver was a little disappointed when another person showed up, but still he gave her a kind smile and a nod of acknowledgment. While he didn't want to crowd her any, he did have a seat since standing for too long a period made his leg act up badly and the last thing he wanted was for terrible pain to get in the way of what he hoped would be an enjoyable evening. That is if Carvesk won. If the other woman's wher won then...well, he wasn't sure what would happen, but if it had been another man instead of a woman he was sure that they would want him gone. Besides which, he wasn't sure how he felt about a threesome anyways. Thankfully, fate was on his and his bronze's side. While the bronze followed Serisk into a secret hiding place, Carver did much the same with Sterling.

(Blah, awful ending post, sorry. I had a goblin doing his best to drive me crazy the last hour.)
