The lands around New Atricis that are regarded as Atricis' new territory. Not as big as their previous protective range, but still lots of space and wilds to explore. Dragon Flights and Wher Runs also occur across these lands.

to Aranrod and Halimila
  • He'd been doing inventory in the Infirmary's storage rooms when the call came that about knocked the breath right out of him. The beast's voice had been there, but hadn't, both near and far. He'd heard Gorgoreth's voice throughout his life but he never assumed he'd be so blessed as to hear another. And as if it were so commonplace! Announced to all with the marvel probably lost to many. Few he knew back home ( outside of the Exalted ) could boast over being spoken to by a dragonkin, let alone more than one! Yet there he was, grinning like a fool and completely spacing on the task at hand. Which no doubt meant he should get back to them. A snap of attention switched the young man right back to the original focus, though he failed at keeping his writing on the neater side. Still, it was legible, and would definitely have to do. He had adventures to go on!

Long legs carried him quickly to the Yard, surprise evident on the handsome features. Would he ever get used to seeing these magnificent beasts up close? He hoped not. His trademark quick and easy smile made itself evident upon sighting a familiar face and he lifted a hand in greeting to K'rios, eager to learn more from the kind teacher. There was a wealth of knowledge waiting to be accessed in that man, and Tovrik was ever the willing student. In this adventure, he wouldn't be going alone -- it was past time he got better acquainted with his fellow explorers. It was with that same easy smile that he drifted towards the two Candidates nearest him, two young ladies who already seemed to know each other. "What a way to start off the day, huh?"

Turning a brighter smile to Aranrod, Mila barely noted the sting in her finger as she shifted towards the other girl. In fact it wasn't until the taller candidate mentioned it, Mila had somewhat forgotten the new injury. "Umm," She started with a bit of confusion in her tone, "Yeah! I was in the kitchens a bit ago and the call startled me," Mila answered holding up the bandaged digit. "I'll be fine though. I've had plenty of these smaller cuts over the turns," She admitted with a small flush at the offer of help. "Thank you for offering though," She added in a whisper just before a male voice spoke up close by.

In a sudden bout of vanity, Mila tried to shift to where her scarred side was closer to the more familiar Aranrod. While she knew some viewed her scars as battle wounds worthy of being noticed and bragged on, there was still a good portion of Halimila that didn't like to admit that she wasn't as pretty as she used to be. Since the new voice was exactly that, new, Mila didn't want to embarrass them all with her new looks. With a shyness that still surprised her, Mila whispered a soft, "It's a good change."

Aranrod was glad that she hadn't missed the injury, that it was new. That was a strange thing to be glad about, though, and not something she should communicate to the other girl. "You were chopping something when the call went out?" she asked with a wince. She could see that a surprise could have been much worse, a small cut was probably not significant.

Then another candidate came up, and he was apparently less observant than Aranrod had worried she might be, making that comment about starting the day to candidates who were talking about an injury, even a minor one. The newcomer seemed pleasant enough, but Aranrod had plenty of experience with men who seemed perfectly pleasant at first encounter, but were ultimately anything but. She was prepared to be polite to him, without necessarily trusting him, but Mila's nervous response to him got her hackles up.

She leaned closer when Mila turned in, but smiled as pleasantly at the other candidate as she could. If Mila said it was a good change, even with the tiny cut, that was good. "It is nice to get my nose out of my notes," she agreed mildly. She never had liked the more purely academic part of harper training. If she'd been pacticing music, she might have been upset about putting it away for whatever this ended up being.

Fyrnella had not been at the Weyr for very long, and as such wasn't that familiar with the rest of the candidates as she never really let herself stand out too much. The call went out for a trip out into the wilderness, honestly she was not looking forward much to such a thing as she frowned. It took her a little bit but she had snatched her little bag full of extra healing supplies before joining with the group. A few dragons and their riders already there, along with a few candidates chatting together as well. She didn't barge into their conversation however and just stood close but somewhat scooted away from others of the group.

Fyrn frowned however as she watched the riders start to load their dragon's up and bit her bottom lip a little bit. Would her little bag make a difference and would be left behind? Well instead of waiting to be told to return it she walked up to I'ent and gave a little cough while a couple of feet away. She had noticed him acting a little strange but didn't think much of it, but did notice his green dragon seemed to be rather happy and hyper. "Pardon me, sorry to bother you but do you think it is okay to bring this small bag with us? It is just extra supplies for healing, just basics really just incase. As a healer I tend to take it with me wherever I go, unless it will be too cumbersome?"

Gently giving a tug on the bag she had thrown over her shoulder, she lifted it up to show the small size of it and the relative lightness of it. Inwardly she was already thinking of the worst scenario, having to run it back and then run to make this trip. Nevermind hoping that they had enough healing supplies as well amongst all those bags being tied up.

I'ent found he didn't have much to say or do as Candidates slowly drifted over singly and in small groups. He realized he had no idea how many Candidates they were nor how many were coming on this excursion. He knew there was a fair number when he was a Candidate but that was about 2 Turns ago now. Some he vaguely remembered when he was a Candidate but most were strangers to him. Eventually he turned his gaze to some random spot and lost himself in his own thoughts.

When one of the Candidates spoke nearly at his elbow I'ent jumped and glanced at her then looked around to see who she really was addressing. He realized within seconds she had to be talking to him and in tones that just didn't fit with how he felt women, even Candidate women, should direct towards him. Tensing he worried she was trying to set him up, make him think she was actually seeing him as superior and jumping on him the moment he presumed anything.

He heard what she said however despite his confusion about her behavior, I'ent certainly wouldn't want to upset or anger a woman by failing to hear what she asked. Looking at the bag she had in her hand he doubted it weighed much and as far as he was concerned, extra healing supplies can't be bad.

"It's no problem," I'ent responding, deciding that wouldn't get him in trouble in any shape or fashion from the woman. "I can add it to one of the supply bags on Shireth."

Sensing her Precious's insecurities about women were kicking in, Shireth shifted and looked over at the girl. She certainly felt like a Candidate to her, something the green had been noticing more and more as Candidates arrived. They all felt different from other young humans she had encountered who weren't Weryborn, such as several at the Gathering she had attended.

It didn't take her long to see what the Candidate had in her hand and what she wanted. Shireth lowered her head to get a closer look at the girl and the package I'ent offered to tie on her back.

<That small thing? I doubt I would even notice it's been added to the other supplies I am already carrying. Besides, my rider is the biggest weight I have to carry around.>

I'ent heard every word Shireth told Fyrnella and he gave the green a look. "Are you saying I am too heavy?"

<Not at all, but you are heavier now than you used to be. It's all that food you keep eating, I swear your stomach is growing faster than a gold's belly after a mating flight.>

It was true enough I'ent had been gaining weight but not in the way Shireth was implying. He certainly wasn't pregnant nor was he fat but over 2 Turns of eating as much as he wanted plus plenty of hard work certainly resulted in a much fitter looking young man than he was when he first arrived at the Weyr.

It seemed this dragonrider wasn't ready or noticed her before she spoke, his jumping didn't escape her notice but she kept silent about it. Obviously she didn't have much presence that others noticed, then again she was rather quiet so it wasn't too surprising. But even as he stared at her something seemed off in her mind. Fyrn however couldn't quite place it, maybe this was the so called dragonrider presence or how one should act as a rider? No not all of them did, well she didn't pipe up anyways and merely listened to him speak up.

Fyrn smiled though in relief, it looked like it wouldn't be a problem and feeling a lot better. While they probably were taking enough healing supplies she felt better having her own bag with her. Say what others will, at least she knew exactly what and where things were in it without having to dig through a foreign supply bag in an emergency setting. Her entire body lost it's tenseness as she relaxed, happy gentle smile and everything. She wasn't the most fit, and while she was somehow able to get through the training for candidates she was kind of wanting to avoid rushing back to the barracks.

Eyes grew wide however when she heard the green speak to her, the smile on her face went wider even while her face turned a little shade redder. Inwardly she felt rather happy that a dragon spoke to her, but she tried very hard not to bounce around all willy nilly happily. "I.. I'm glad." Was all she managed to stutter out in response, only to snort a little bit trying to hold in some laughter. Reaching up to place a hand over her mouth to try to stifle it. These two seemed very close... well of course dragon and rider were close but she could tell they acted like a family.

However he of course had to respond in kind, causing some sort of giggle snort to escape Fyrn and causing her to go even redder. Trying so hard not to laugh at the poor rider. "I.. I'm sure she didn't mean you are heavy... I mean... should hope most bags aren't too heavy and.. well.. um.." She coughed a little bit and held out the bag while looking at the ground. "Sorry don't mean to laugh or anything." I'ent's actions from before fled her mind for now, now all that was left was awkward embarrassment as she tried and failed to stop her laughter and tried to make things better only to stumble over her own tongue.

I'ent hadn't expected the woman to laugh at Shireth's banter, in all honesty he didn't know if he should feel offended, laugh with her or just ignore it. He decided to shrug and take the offered bag so he could secure it to Shireth's harness. It barely had any weight anyway and Shireth was used to carrying him and two or more full firestone sacks. Sometimes a couple passengers if he was asked to transfer some dignitary from the Holds sworn to Atricis.

"My green can be quite the wit," I'ent responded. "Once we arrive to where we're going I'll give the sack back to you so you can keep it with your things."

As the candidates arrived, some more quickly than others, K'rios made sure to do a quiet head count. So far, they were all checking in, not a single one of them he was going to need to go hunting for himself. Good, that would make things flow more effortlessly for them all, and allow them to move on to the next portion of this exercise more quickly. They would be rewarded for that if they continued to work in this pattern, he determined, and he spoke to Bellatrix through Vidarth about the matter he had in mind while the candidates mingled and spoke to each other and their escorts. When he received the confirmation, he grinned to himself, deciding he wouldn't reserve it for the end of the event - give it to them now, let them know it could easily be taken away if they didn't work as a team. A potentially cruel move, but they needed to know that there were potential consequences to not behaving and otherwise playing nice.

When he felt enough time had passed, and the last of the candidates had most certainly arrived according to his dragon, he had the pewter make a sound that could have been a whistle if given by a human. Instead, it came off as an something hoarse and bubbling that confused even Iktomith. After laughing it off, tears running down his face, K'rios sobered up and ran a hand over his eyes. "Alright, everyone, gather 'round, it's time for you all to get an explanation so we can head out!" Okay, he was fine, he would be fine, he could be fine.

"After speaking to our lovely Candidatemaster, it's been determined that we're going out for an overnight camping trip. Now, this isn't going to be something for pleasure, but as an exercise in teamwork for all of you. You'll need to all work together in order to craft fires, make klah, fish, prepare food, and ensure we all eat and sleep comfortably. That means working as a collective team, regardless of any issues you might have with one of your fellow candidates. Truthfully, I don't give a shit about the petty garbage right now - you're not going to be a dragonrider if you can't work as a unit. That is one of the main lessons I, Bellatrix, and the rest of the team have been trying to drill into you this entire time, and that's one of the lessons you'll be practicing tonight." He uncrossed his arms and grasped his hips instead, loosening up his stance, growing more comfortable in their presence.

"When we arrive on the grounds I've chosen, I'll select teams. Those teams will work in the different areas - fishing, gathering, setting up the camp. It'll be up to all of you as a whole to prepare the meal once the gatherers and the fishers have completed their tasks." He held up a hand. "In the case of those unable to eat fish, meat has been sent from the kitchens for you, so don't worry, I've seen to your needs." He nodded to those one or two he knew where in that boat, assuring them that he was looking out for them in those regards. "A dragonrider will be assigned to each area to assure you'll be watched over. While the teams will answer to me, the riders will inform me if they notice anything as well, so you're to behave for them."

He glanced as the faces watching him, then nodded. "After I dismiss you here, you'll be sent to the barracks to pack a small overnight bag. Take no more than one change of clothes, and something to wash up with. Everything else is being provided for you. Lizard pets are permitted on this trip, but any others are not. Oh, and as an incentive," he tried not to grin as he shifted on his feet. "For those of you who think they can get away with not behaving, or think they'll try and sneak away for some side fun while we're out... make one wrong step and you ruin this for everyone. Candidatemaster Bellatrix has kindly, and generously decided to allow one free day from the chore of your choice next Rest Day if you all behave during this trip. But as I said, one slip from even one of you..."

He glanced at his companions, nodded to them, and proceeded to make introductions. "Before I go on any further, I'd like you all to know your escorts and the woman who volunteered to help instruct you. They willingly volunteered their time for this trip, and you're to respect them as you would anyone else within the Weyr. We have Wingrider I'ent of green Shireth, Wingrider K'uavaen of blue Synsith, and finally Journeywoman Fisher Dirce who will be assisting those of you on the fishing team." With that said and done, he finally took the time to pause, and ask his charges, "Before I dismiss you to prepare, are there any questions or concerns you might have at this time?"

Varren sighed internally. Camping. At least if it was only one night, he wouldn't have to ask for someone to look after his plants. They could manage one day without attention. He also didn't have the total aversion to dirt some healers, justifiably, had. Dirt obviously had no place in the infirmary, but spending time taking care of plants meant that he spent quite a bit of time sweaty and covered in soil. He would probably fare better than some of the candidates who had never spent a night outside of walls, but he couldn't say that he would enjoy this.

He had a brief moment of concern about the feline attacks that the wherhandlers had been dealing with, but calmed himself down easily. They would be going dragon-back, so obviously the candidate masters would be taking them far enough that there wasn't anything to worry about from that front. So the only problem was whether one or more of the other candidates would misbehave.

And of course they would. It was an empty promise to offer them all relief from a chore. One of the candidates would surely think he could avoid getting caught, or just not care about the possible reward. Then the candidate masters would get their teamwork, when all the other candidates developed a sense of community in blaming whatever idiot did that. All Varren could do was make certain that HE wasn't the idiot in question. Well, that and he could ask one relevant question.

"Assistant Candidatemaster K'rios," he began, "I don't know if you've already chosen teams, but if not, then I should be able to recognize what plants are safe to eat." It was the only skill he had that might be useful in this situation, so he would make certain they knew about it. He couldn't do anything to make this trip fun, after all but everything is more pleasant when you are at least good at what you are doing.

Aranrod looked around her fellow candidates skeptically. It had been quite a few turns, but she had lived without a hold pretty much until her apprenticeship. Some of these holder or craftbred might not have ever slept without a roof, and she was sure that plenty of them would be unable to sleep at all, startling at every nighttime noise.

If they were only bringing one change of clothes and something to wash with, then the real question would be what clothes to bring. It was warm outside obviously, even at night, but...

If they were going by dragon, then it might not be. Surely they would stay within the lands beholden to New Atricis, but even if they could assume that they were staying on the Southern Continent, there were mountain peaks that were always colder than the surrounding land. So before choosing clothing, they needed to know,

"Assistant Candidatemaster, sir, can you tell us what kind of weather to expect?" she asked. If they needed to pack warm, outdoor clothes, she could manage. She wasn't quite as certain of Halimila's wardrobe, and she would have to figure out a polite way to ask if the other girl had a set of clothes appropriate for the wilderness. She was nice, but SO very domesticated.

Fyrn gave I'ent and his green a little smile and a small thank you again but went quiet as she heard someone start announcing some things to the candidates. Quickly she gave a little bow towards him before skittering herself closer to the candidates just incase they were all supposed to group up or something. Honestly this was her first time doing anything like this so she was trying hard to do things right, her face going mostly blank as she seriously looked at K'rios and listened intently. So it would be a camping trip and the teams were already decided, as for the reward of a free day she didn't take it to heart. If one maybe two people were in the group it would be fairly easy to figure things out, but get any larger and the possibility for something to go wrong would just grow.

Fishing might be the best team for her to go to, incase of any injuries.... But what about gathering? Poisonous plants or finding a hostile animal... or just plain clumsiness. Also couldn't forget about possible injuries while things were getting set up. Two other candidates spoke up when he finally got to the end, one could tell plants easily? Well that was good and would probably make injuries less likely there. While the other asked about the weather? Oh yeah they were going dragonback so anywhere was possible. This caused a frown on her face as she stared at the ground, while she had never really been in the wild before that is a thing to ask.

"I am also a journeywoman healer, so no matter what team I am put in if there isn't enough healers to take care of the others I don't mind helping. So a way to communicate in that case..." Fyrn managed to speak up, sure it wasn't a question or concern, just maybe communication so she could get to the injured as soon as possible. In her mind was already a multitude of thoughts, stemming from the basics and up. Good thing she brought her basic bag already, though looks like they would all be going back to pack a few things. Did she have any decent clothes to take? More and more thoughts swirled in her mind, mostly about what possibles might happen or the worst that could happen in any possible sense.
