Lessons Learned ~ { Tag } Dragon Candidates, LdyPayne/I'ent, Kate/K'uavaen

The lands around New Atricis that are regarded as Atricis' new territory. Not as big as their previous protective range, but still lots of space and wilds to explore. Dragon Flights and Wher Runs also occur across these lands.

It had taken almost two sevendays to put everything together. There had been scheduling to work around, weather and Threadfall patterns to watch for, and of course the issue of the felines to discuss. But in the end, K'rios' grand plan of taking the dragon candidates camping and fishing had come to fruition, and with Bellatri's stamp of approval, today was the day. They would get to have fun with the event, no doubt at all, but not without some work involved - that had been one of her conditions of course, along with taking other riders and dragons with them for protection. He had managed to wrangle up I'ent and K'uavaen to assist him with the task, and Nizhoni had tentatively agreed to come by in a pinch if they ended up needing a fourth as backup. But three riders in all seemed like enough, and so with that in mind, he had set about packing what he would need, knowing he would leave the rest as the first part of the lesson for the candidates.

We're going to call for Synsith, Shireth, and Dirce first, Iktomith. He said, joining his dragon in the Weyr Yard where he strapped a final pack to the pewter's harness. Then we're going to set about calling for the candidates themselves. But I want our fellow escorts to be with us as the candidates arrive, so I can have words with them as well before I begin speaking with our charges. He gave the dragon's foreleg a pat, then checked in his jacket for Kipper - the sling he'd fashioned for the creature made sure he could sleep against him without being disturbed, and sure enough, he was still asleep, oblivious to what was going on around him as his owner moved around.

Iktomith, excited for this, crooned, perhaps eager because of how sneaky his rider was being as well - after all, the candidates wouldn't know what they were going to be walking into when they arrived. He called first to the adults that would be involved, reaching out to both dragons, riders, and the lone bondless human. Synsith, Shireth, riders, Dirce, my rider is ready, if your could come to the Weyr Yard. I'm going to be calling for the candidates in a moment here.

K'rios rumbled his approval, and leaned back against his mindmate as he waited for the first of them to arrive. Then the dragon reached his mind out to their charges, making sure the Candidatemaster could hear him as well so that she'd be aware of what was being said, that they were getting ready to prepare for their departure. Dragon candidates, finish your tasks for this morning and join me and my rider in the Weyr Yard. Once all of you have arrived here, there is a special announcement that needs to be made by way of himself and Vidarth's rider.

OOC: Welcome to this dragon candidate thread; next post from K'rios will contain more information on what the candidates will get to look forward to! For marks trackers, this does count as a candidate lesson!

K'uavaen and Blue Synsith

Looking around the house, K'uavaen smiled softly to himself. Getting stuff accomplished was always something that felt good to him. While there wasn't much that had needed to be done, he knew he was going to be helping K'rios with the candidates, so while he had had to time this afternoon he was just trying to make sure things were good. Isolde and he liked to keep things neat, which wasn't really hard, especially since the two of them weren't around much with all their responsibilities. Plus it meant he could spend more time with her if he did a bit of the cleaning at a time when he had a spare moment. It gave him for free time to just be with her, like a couple should. Even though they had been together for a while now, the blue rider still felt as though he owed it to her to keep showing her exactly what she meant to him. Of course, the grey handler would tell him not to worry about all of that, but obviously he would never listen to that. Flowers and little gifts usually appeared once every other sevenday, just to show he was still thinking about her and such.

Good, all he had left to do was get the dishes cleaned that they had used this morning. It did not take him long at all to get those couple things cleaned up. Right as he was putting the last dish away, his dragon's voice. K'rios calls us K'uavaen. We promised him we would help. I am ready to meet him if you are.

Yah, I'm ready Synsith, I just have to grab the stuff I packed up. Be right there.

Going to his bedroom, he grabbed his stuff. Alright Synsith. I'm ready, I'll just meet you there. I feel like a walk would do me some good right about now. I'm kind of nervous about whatever it is we're going to be doing. Help me get some of this nervous energy out.

With that he headed out the door, making his way to the Weyr Yard. Walking at his own pace, he still managed to get to the Weyr Yard pretty quickly. Once he reached there, he smiled at the pewter rider. "K'rios, good to see you again. Glad I could come and help you out."

Initially I'ent hadn't wanted to volunteer to help K'rios out on a lesson for the Dragon Candidates but when Shireth caught win of it she was all for it.

<It will be a great adventure, not to mention a great opportunity to prepare future Dragonriders,> Shireth had insisted.

So I'ent agreed and waited for K'rios to get in touch for the time the excursion will begin. In the mean time he went about his duties as normal, which included taking care of the wingless lizard he won in a raffle. Ancient had grown quite a bit in the 4 months since she hatched. No sign of wings but he did see feather like growths along her forelimbs and tail and he was pretty sure she'll have crest too. He also continued practicing his fighting skills and moving around as quietly as possible as he wanted to be better the next time he asked Locke to teach him more techniques to improve.

When word came from K'rios everything had been arranged and when the outing was scheduled, I'ent spent the days leading up to it figuring out what he should bring. Obviously he would bring his fighting straps along with extras should they need to hunt and the carcass needed to be secured against Shireth's belly for transport. He didn't know if they will be flying the Candidates to some location so he wanted to make sure he had straps for passengers too. I'ent also packed his fighting leathers plus another change of clothing so he won't be stuck wearing the heavily insulated leathers while on the ground in the heat. He also packed food, more than enough for himself and Ancient and made sure Shireth was fed the day before they left so she wouldn't be hungry the day of their departure. Other than that he didn't know what else to bring.

Asking questions however had him add a basic first aid kit which included numbweed, oil for Ancient. She may have feathers but there was plenty of hide which would need regularly oiling still. He also included the few weapons he had plus basic fishing and hunting gear. Lastly he found a sleeping pad he could use plus a blanket to finish off his packing. Two things he wouldn't have considered, he never had either before he came to the Weyr so he just assumed 'roughing it' meant living like he did till he was 16.

<Iktomith calls, it is time my Precious, it is time, adventure awaits us, hurry hurry!> Shireth pranced in her eagerness and nearly caused one of the bundles I'ent had failed to secure properly to fall off her back.

"Take it easy Shireth, I haven't secured that pack yet!" I'ent called, worrying the pack will fall and the fragile things in it would break. He didn't bring many fragile things, mostly the jar of oil and numbweed he was concerned with as that was the pack he included the first aid kit in. Looking around to make sure he didn't forget anything then checking to make sure Ancient was secure in the little pouch he made for her, I'ent quickly secured the last of the packs then mounted up.

Shireth didn't wait for I'ent to give the command to join K'rios in the Weyr Yard. As soon as she knew I'ent was secure she took wing, flying swiftly through the air in her eagerness to start this adventure. As she descended she spotted Synsith was already on his way and chortled out a greeting. She remembered clearly how fun it had been to twine tails with Synsith and was eager to have a completely different adventure with the blue.

<Hello hello Synsith, are you eager for our Adventure? Shireth called out as soon as she joined him on the ground. Folding her wings she quickly moved to the blue's side before turning her attention to the Pewter.

>When will the Candidates join us? Or are we to go find them first? I am very eager to depart so hopefully we don't have to find them though if that's part of the adventure then I will find them quickly!>

I'ent exhaled slowly as Shireth rambled on. Normally she wasn't this excited but when it came to new adventures her enthusiasm was hard to contain. He looked over at K'uavaen and also remembered the first time he met the bluerider. He gave a slight wave, unsure how their relationship would be now, or even if there was any need to worry about it. Flights happen and weren't suppose to be anything to worry about, or so he was told. Not that he felt anything against K'uavaen nor did he feel it would be an issue having the two of them together on this excursion.

"A nice day for a trip," I'ent commented, then dismounted and joined K'rios and K'uavaen on the ground.

She wasn't sure why she was helping, and couldn't quite recall how she'd come to agree. Something about the pewterrider betting her that he could beat a fisher at a drinking game and her taking him up on that offer because no one could beat someone with the sea in their veins at drinking. She'd come to regret it in the morning when she'd woken up with a headache, but thankfully he'd been a gentleman and not taken advantage of the situation; just asked her to help with his candidate excursion. When Cariden had found out, he'd all but jumped and said she had to, so that had been that and now here she was, packing up her things with the help of her brother, who was certain he'd be the first candidate there.

"This isn't about play you know. You're going to have to work. I'm more or less a teacher during this trip." She sounded strict, even now, but Cariden just grinned in his jolly way and saluted her as he checked another pole and added it to the stack already set up in place. "Besides, we don't know when we're going to go, and you're not even supposed to know about this. I'm just having you help because..."

"Because you love me and you adore me and you'd be lost without me."

Something like that.

Her silence said everything to the boy who couldn't stop grinning as he tied another bundle off and set it aside. At that moment, Iktomith spoke to Dirce, and a few moments later, he spoke to Cariden. The boy whooped and hollered, but before he could zoom off to prepare, she grabbed his sleeve and pulled him back. "Remember, you don't know about this, so you can't act all excited. I can carry everything just fine, so go ahead of me and stop bouncing so much. You're going to end up attaching yourself to Rukbat at this rate."

He gave her a nudge with his hip before doing just that, at which point she grabbed as much as she could. She ended up needing someone, grabbed a weyrling to help her, paid him a few marks, then together they hauled all the gear they could outside. When she arrived she offered K'rios, K'uavaen, and I'ent a nod, not knowing the other two riders - or for that, K'rios - very well, but the pewterrider she was at least on name terms with. "I've got what we'll need for the fishing part of all of this. Just tell me what you end up needing me to do otherwise, and I'll do it." That being said, she stepped aside, waiting for whatever happened next.

K'uavaen and Blue Synsith
For a few moments, the blue rider just took everything in, his nerves just the slightest bit on edge. While he knew the general idea of what this was going to be about, he had his doubts that he was the best man for the job. Teaching candidates? Being at a lesson? The young man did not really see himself as much of a teacher, he was really just hoping that he was here just to be more of a baby sitter. Although, he really hated using that word, babysitter. The candidates didn't need to be baby sat. Those young people needed someone to teach them stuff, about what they were going to be doing the rest of their lives. Well, what they would need to know after they got their dragons anyway. Sure, he was able to deal with younger people, he didn't mind them at all. Just the thought of teaching them made him a little nervous, mostly because he was one of those types who just never wanted to mess anything up.

After a few moments, another rider showed up, and to K'uavaen's surprise, it was I'ent, the green rider who K'uavaen had spent the night with not to long ago. Synsith had won his green's flight, so the two of them had participated together. Isolde hadn't minded, she knew how Flights went, and it was pretty much the same thing when Reshelde chased. A tiny part of him felt weird, having slept with someone else besides Isolde, and a man non the less, but that was just the way things went when it came to Flights, and everyone accepted it. As the young green rider raised his hand in a eave, K'uavaen did the same thing, smiling softly at the other man. "You're right, it is a very nice day for trip."

As everyone said their hellos, Synsith rumbled a greeting to the Green he had caught. The blue dragon found himself very excited that she was going to be going on this stip with them as well. Hello to you too Shireth. Of course I'm eager for an adventure. It's so exciting, especially when the candidates are involved. After the Flight, he had become slightly attacthed to her and loved being in her company.

Just then, someone the blue rider didn't know showed up and he studied her for a moment, trying not to stare. She looked familiar, and he knew he'd seen her around, but he did not know her name, and he doubted she knew his. At her nod, he nodded back and gave her a small, friendly smile. "I'm K'uavaen, and this blue dragon here is Synsith. It's nice to meet you.." He let his voice trail off, blushing a bit as he realized he didn't know the young woman's name.

At the pewter's summons, Varren looked around the greenhouse. He still wanted to transplant a few things, but he hadn't started the process, so they weren't urgent. He had already watered all the plants, and taken care of the few things otherwise likely to become rootbound, so if he came back tomorrow, there wouldn't be a problem with anything here. This actually seemed like a good point to stop, although he still needed to clean himself up. He was meticulous about getting the soil off his hands and arms, and especially out from under his fingernails, and the clean up probably took as much time as the other candidates would need for finishing their chores as Iktomith has directed.

Luckily, the Weyr Yard was easy to find from anywhere else in the Weyr, so the fact that he was not perfectly familiar with New Atricis yet did not cause him any problems. It was still surprising that he was one of the earliest candidates to arrive, though he could see several others coming. Of course, the people who were already there were more interesting than the candidates he shared barracks with. He had expected the assistant candidate master, since it was the man's dragon who had summoned them, but Varren didn't know the other riders yet.

"Good morning candidate master, riders," he said, nodding at the blue and greenrider. In High Reaches, he had known almost all the riders, and it seemed like he'd been related to half of them. Here, he only really knew Finn, and he was still feeling off balance from that to some degree.

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Aranrod sighed at the pewter's instructions. Finish up the morning's tasks? Was she supposed to stop now and clear up, or completely finish and then come? The candidates didn't all have class together, of course, as they were of varying ages and educational backgrounds. Aranrod was currently reviewing information on the Weyr's relationship with its Southern neighbors, and she was having a culture shock not unlike her first turn living in a hold. Nothing about the southern continent's culture fit into her old way of thinking, and she could only be grateful that the Weyr mostly kept to northern customs except as necessary to interact with its neighbors.

She put away her notes. She wasn't really making much progress in understanding how the northern legal system interacted with the southern one, and she wouldn't get any further while she was wondering exactly when she was supposed to show up in the Weyr Yard. Instead, she tidied her area, and begain trying to wash the ink off her fingers. It never completely came off, but that was a common problem for harpers, and there were worse problems to have than faintly black stained fingertips.

She made her way to the Weyr Yard, joining the slowly growing group of candidates standing near K'rios and the other riders while she waited for guidance.

Glad that his fellow riders had made an appearance before the candidates, K'rios clasped them on the shoulders, then nodded when Dirce stepped forward. He would explain to them why she was there in a moment, but first he wanted to thank them for their service to this "lesson" they were participating in. Again. "I appreciate this, you know that, right? I'm going to make sure you get that wine I promised, or the marks if you'd prefer. Are there any questions you have before more of the candidates begin to show up?" He included Dirce in that question, since she looked curious herself, or maybe that was just how he was reading her.

"As for our lady companion here," she scoffed at being called a lady. "I invited her along to include a fishing aspect to the entire event. That will be explained in further detail when I address the candidates, but I wanted to let you in on that before I begin." He checked to see how many had arrived, and they were starting to trickle, a little at a time, so he had Iktomith "poke the hive" so to say. That seemed to work, and more of them started to appear at a much quicker pace. "It pays to have the ability to do that when you need to. Just sit tight and we'll be off soon enough. Remember those questions if you have any."

OOC: Dragon Candidates are still more than welcome to join in, I'm just replying with K'rios to continue to move this along. <3

I'ent nodded. He would have said more to the bluerider but a woman showed up and any thought of speaking left I'ent's mind. One didn't talk when a woman talked, at least not how he was raised. K'rios had given a basic idea of what was in store but I'ent didn't recall him saying anything about fishing. The woman's words confused him in other ways, such as were would there be places to fish in the jungle? Sure there were streams here and there and rivers but how could they fish if they don't have a boat to fish from?

Shireth hummed in pleasure when Synsith told her he was as eager for adventure as she was. She had made a good choice in him for a mate maybe she'll pick him for her next flight since they both shared a love for adventure. >I never had an adventure with Candidates, I really do hope they are ready for it. Maybe we'll find a Feline to hunt and kill, show them and the flightless ones we're the best at getting rid of them.>

He didn't know which K'uavaen would prefer but I'ent wanted the Marks. He never had much use for wine, even now when he could drink it freely. Marks however he could use to buy whatever he wanted or save up for something special. I'ent didn't see any reason to tell K'rios which he preferred at the moment however, instead he listened the rest of what the Candidatemaster had to say.

Since K'rios intended to explain what the deal with fishing was all about once all the Candidates showed up, I'ent found he didn't have any questions. He gave his head a shake to indicate he had no questions then looked over at the fisher woman, wondering if she will introduce herself to K'uavaen or ignore him as I'ent expected women to do when it came to men who addressed them without being given permission to do so.

The few Candidates who did make their appearance, I'ent nodded, trying to be friendly without being overly vocal about it. Soon others showed up and I'ent found he was getting antsy, wanting to get underway before any of the female Candidates started asking him questions or introduce themselves to him or worse, flirt. He may have spent some time with a woman Locke had arranged him to meet but he was a long way from feeling comfortable around women, even those closer to his age.

Halimila had been in the middle of chopping a pile of vegetables for the next meal when a sudden voice broke into her mind. Startling at the male feel of the intrusion, Mila felt the sharp sting of her blade slipping past the tuber braced in her still tender hand. Though healing nicely the wrist would be rather sore for another few weeks. Mila blinked down at the now bleeding finger as she tried to process the information flickering across her mind. A few mumbled words left her lips as she began to understand. Raising her gaze from her finger as she lifted the injured digit to her lips, Mila sought out a senior cook to let them know what was going on. After she finally caught the attention of another cook, she managed to stutter out a few words before the other lady put the pieces together herself. "So they're calling you for a lesson? A bit odd that but riders do as riders want," The elder cook intoned with an air of amused disapproval.

With a quick stop at a sink to wash her injured finger and to bandage it with a bit of spare cloth, Mila was on her way to the yard where the dragon had instructed them to meet. Glad to see that she wasn't the last to arrive, Mila smiled a few greetings at those she recognized. There were a few familiar faces in the crowd, mostly fellow dragon-hopefuls but still it put the cook's helper in a happy frame of mind. It wasn't often that the girl got a chance to break away from the monotony of healing. Now she was getting a chance to mingle with her peers outside of the lesson-room. Moving to stand closer to the harper girl, Aranrod. "Hello," Mila called out in greeting, not really addressing any particular person.

When Halimila approached, Aranrod was glad the other girl came to stand near her. In her time at the Weyr, she hadn't made many connections yet, but hopefully their interactions at the Gather had made a good impression. "Hello," she murmured in response to Mila's greeting before frowning at the bandaged finger. She knew they had been at breakfast at the same time, but she didn't remember seeing the bandage then. Of course, she had been focusing on feeding herself and her two bronzes instead of interacting with the other candidates.

That was a bad habit. She needed to pay attention to the others, since she had already been in classes and made it through several Hatchings with many of them. If she ever managed to Impress (which she was starting to doubt after being left standing 4 times), these people would be her wingmates. She would rely on them for support, and probably end up in rather intimate situations with several of them.

Well, even if she had missed the injury earlier, that was no excuse to ignore it now. "Is that new?" she asked, nodding toward the bandage. "Will you need help with anything while it heals?" It was clearly much less severe than the mauling Mila had gotten on the Sands, but even small injuries on the hand could cause trouble getting things done.
