Rhea pulled the spyglass down at Galena's words and turned back to the group. "That's because it wasn't the felines," he confirmed, "There's an old camp in the clearing. Fire's out, but no way in telling how long until we can go see if it's still warm. Either way, I don't think the feline or campers are still around, otherwise at least one of our whers would smell them." Rhea sent a glance back through the branches and to the clearing.

"We can wait for Ferghas to scout, but if he doesn't have any compelling news, I say we check it out and continue on. They could be connected, or they might not be. Either way, there wasn't a fight since none of our whers are smelling blood or decay."

Ferghas moved silently and kept his eyes and ears open. He could feel how much Fersk did not like this, but he knew he would be quieter without her. Finally he reached the other side of the clearing and began to look for more tracks. It took him a minute but finally found where the trail picked back up. There was nothing definitive, why would it be that easy, but there was signs of either one large thing or many things passing through. Looking at the clearing and the cut away brush, he hazards to guess this was man made.

"Bullocks." He says under his breath in irritation. Well, there was nothing here to help point to the felines, so he might as well head back to the group. Instead of going back the way he came, he struts from the shadows of the plant growth into the clearing, opting to take the shorter route of going straight through. He gives a cursory glance at where the fire had been, but continues on to where he knows his group is waiting on the other side.

"Sorry darlings. Not much to report on. Something or somethings did head in that direction," He said and pointed in the area he found the trail. "But it's impossible to tell for sure if it was felines or whoever made this clearing."

The more information trickling in from the others the more Iggharudube felt the clearing was likely the campground of a passing caravan. Ferghas final report pretty much confirmed it.

"Lets head into the clearing, see if our Whers can pick up any distinct scents but from what everybody's has reported, this may just be a regular trader stopover." Inggharudube suggested then made his way into the clearing, his bronze venturing forward to get there first, keen on learning anything new scent wise he didn't already know.

Rhea nodded in agreement and followed Inggharadube out into the clearing. While Ferghas had walked through it without mishap, Rhea still kept his attention up and impressed on Rheask to keep his attention on the scent of the feline they were tracking as best he could. Rask he had keeping a nose out for anything his eyes missed.

She frowned at Rhea's statement. She knew it wasn't the felines, but that didn't make it good news. There was a fire here, a camp, and they hadn't known to expect it. There was a short list of things that could mean, and she didn't like any of it. Especially because she was now thinking the best case scenario was that they would find traders or travelers in desperate need of her help.

Even then...this was too close to the Weyr for there to be any legitimate travel that the leaders weren't informed of. At best, they were poachers or runaways, and in either situation, there was a good chance they were in danger from the felines at this very moment. At worst?

"I haven't heard an explanation for why these felines are suddenly acting so intelligent. Would it be more likely that they suddenly had kits much smarter than their parents, or that a human figured out how to train them?" she asked, grimly. "If there's no sign of a fight in the camp, are there scents of humans and felines that were in that area at about the same time?"

Either the humans that made this camp were connected to the Weyr's attackers, or they were in danger from the felines themselves. It made Galana feel queasy as a healer, but she would be happiest if they found some terrified and injured runaway who was clearly not training the big cats. It would be better to do emergency surgery on a stranger than to end up having to test her meager weapons skills against one.

Handlers:
Investigation of the fire will show it still holds some lingering warmth. There are signs of tents and sleeping arrangements, and it's become clearer that part of the clearing, at least, has manmade by cutting away edging vegetation.

Whers:
Inside the clearing, there are a number of different scents. They are a bit hard to separate, but some areas smell more decidedly feline. Whers with Scent Master will be able to pick out the scents of different felines much more easily, but more importantly, will be able to smell the more subtle scents of humans among the feline scents. Scent Master whers will also pick up the scent of something approaching, though soon after the rest of the whers will scent it as well.

While investigating the clearing and discussing the possibilities and what to do next, the handlers would not have to go further to find the possible source of the camp clearing. The whers scented it first, but soon the sounds of movement through the brush could be heard, the beings not trying to hide themselves very well, clearly not expecting anyone out here.

"Shardit! Turn back, run!" The man, scarred and rugged looking, said with surprise, clearly talking to compatriots behind him as he spun to motion to them to get away. Sounds of scattering bodies through the forest could be heard, retreating away as fast as they could. Even the man who had entered the clearing tried to make a break for it, crashing through the brush not quite the way he had come from but still keeping from dashing across the clearing so as to try to keep the whers from getting him.

Once in the clearing Inggharusk started sniffing around, picking up many scents among the very fresh scents of Fersk and Ferghas who had taken a short cut through the clearing moments before. He ignored the familiar scents and focused on the others, mind working hard to decide which were safe to ignore and which he should bring to his Handler's attention.

Inggharudube scanned the clearing as he entered, leaving his wher to puzzle out the scents. The fireplace looked quite fresh and one had to be blind not to notice the flattened areas where tents had been erected. The vegetation also looked recently cut, a clear sign the clearing wasn't a natural formation. He was about to investigate the fire itself when Inggharusk gave a whistle and headed towards one particular spot of the clearing.

<Spotted furred ones scent strong, not one but many,> Inggharusk reported, sniffing the ground in one particular area of the clearing.

"Inggharusk found feline scent, several of them," Inggharudube reported, striding towards his Wher to see what he could find in that location. The words were barely out of his mouth when he heard rustling in the brush and spotted a man step into the clearing. The curse the man said and his shouted warning made it clear they had not wanted to be discovered and it also made Iggnarudube realize something that should have occurred to them long ago. The felines weren't wild.

"Rhea, stop him!," Inggharudube commanded pointing at the man. He hoped Rhea had his bow ready, if not there was always one of his Whers. "Ferghas, lets get the others but don't go too far!"

By the time he finished issuing orders, Inggharudube was already running towards the nearest sound of somebody trying to run away through the trees. A whistle brought Inggharusk away from the area of feline scent to join him. The bronze wher may not be as fast as his smaller kin but when it came to tracking fleeing humans, the Wher was very good. Such fresh scent would make the chase all the easier.

Galana wasn't happy that her sudden suspicion had been proved right just moments later. She would definitely have preferred to be wrong. Failing that, she would have preferred to have figured this out a long time ago. She and Galask were not at the edge of the clearing when the man burst in, and then tried to burst out, so her abortive, almost reflexive dart forward to stick the end of her staff near the man's turning feet was useless. Still, she surprised herself by running toward the threat instead of away from it. Maybe she'd been a wherhandler for too long, or maybe just long enough. Galask's charge toward the man was only a little less futile, but he still had no chance of reaching the man before he reentered the undergrowth.

Inggharudube's instructions made perfect sense, and if Galana was not the best choice for fighting these attackers, she was at least in a good place to treat any injuries that might occur. Hopefully, to the humans apparently training the felines to attack whers, and she wouldn't put any serious effort into relieving their pain, either.

Since her first vague foreboding a few moments before, increasing anger and fear had been rising in her chest, and she wasn't sure which was stronger. She couldn't help but think that humans training the felines made them all in that much more danger, and she was definitely feeling her heart rate pick up even though she wasn't one of the people chasing the men into the woods.

But felines - they were natural predators. They killed for food, or to protect their territory, or possible to gain new territory. They weren't malicious, just goal oriented. They were doing what they believed, in their own limited minds, was necessary for survival. The Weyr, and the wher handlers had to stop them, but Galana had mostly just wanted them gone, without truly hating them.

If the felines were acting at human direction? The humans were murderers, and she surprised herself with how fiercely she wanted them all dead. That didn't fit in with the turns she had spent training as a healer at all. Though, her thoughts skittered to the whers they had lost, especially the one that the healers had tried so hard to save, and to the handlers they had lost as well. It was entirely natural to feel that kind of rage at someone that killed people she knew, just so long as she didn't act on it once the murderer was a patient. In fact, she called softly after Inggharudube, "Unfortunately, it would be useful to bring at least one back alive."

Galana's suggestion that humans had trained the large felines to attack them was a terrifying thought, but when Rheask informed Rhea that he smelled more felines mingled with human scents and Ingharrudube confirmed that his own wher had caught onto the same, his blood ran a little colder.

The fire was still warm, meaning people had not left here long ago. It meant there would be a fresh trail. At least until he noticed how settled of a campsite this appeared to be. He ran his hands through the careful manicure a portion of the clearing's underbrush had received. Before he could suggest they might come back, however, Rheask let out a few clicks and Rhea stood at attention with his hand on his crossbow. "Something's coming," he said only moments before the rustling of the jungle signaled the direction the visitor--no, visitors, there was too much noise for there to be only one person or animal--came from.

Rhea's crossbow was pointed directly at the man who first entered the clearing. He cursed, turned, and, before Inggharudube could finish telling Rhea to catch the man, Rhea called out, "Halt!" and loosed a bolt at the man's shoulder to hopefully keep from a fatal shot. Without confirming a hit, Rhea turned immediately to Rask and pulled on the strap that would drop most of her gear. Catch. Try not to kill, he told her and Rask leapt to comply.

Rheask moved across the field to guard Rhea at that point and Rhea loosed his gear, as well. The two of them, together, chased after Rask.

Ferghas took a better look around the campsite. The embers of the fire was still warm. Whoever had been here hadn't been gone too long and considering the look of the sleeping arrangements they were likely to come back here. "I'd bet marks whoever has been here will be here again." He commented. What are you getting, Fersk? Anything? His lovely sunset wher was sniffing about, trying to look places the other whers weren't. Different smells. Some feline. Others better smellers. She answered him.

"Shardit! Turn back, run!"

Ferghas whipped around just in time to see a man fleeing back into the woods and the movement of others moving through the leaves as well. His bets were generally spot on and this time was no different. "Bullocks." He stated with some irritation.

"Ferghas, lets get the others but don't go too far!"

"Fersk!" Ferghas yelled for his beast and then took off with Iggharudube, though he took off after one of the other moving bodies through the moving brush. He couldn't help but wonder what exactly was going on here. Feline smell and humans together? It didn't make sense and he was afraid if they did begin to understand they wouldn't like what they found out.
