The Daywher Social [2049 - Bonfire]

While a similar idea to the dragonrider apartments, the Dayhandler cabins are individual homes that are overall smaller than the apartment buildings, with size assigned by rank and needs, woth all cabins allowing Daywhers to come inside. Day wherlings move into these cabins after bonding.

~Ambience Music~
Fuzzy timed back to autumn some time after the Dominance Fights
Back in 2045, Dayhandler Inakil of Rose Dolcekil had an idea, and hosted the first Daywher Social. Eventually, it was decided it was a great idea to do again and again, and quickly it became a new tradition for the Dayfolk of New Atricis Weyr to bring them all together and help nurture a deeper sense of community. Into the season of Autumn, the notices around the Dining Hall and Dayhandler Cabins would go up, reminding everyone of the Daywher Social coming up. While geared most toward the Dayfolk, non-Dayfolk were welcome to come to the Bonfire as well to meet with and get to know the Dayhandlers and Daywhers that help keep New Atricis Weyr safe.

The event actually began in the later afternoon, with a relay race that people had signed up for that morning. The race had been great fun, and by the time it was over, the main event was completely set up thanks to the help of some Weyrfolk that lended their hand to the event. So with the relay complete, the bonfire neared, and everyone who participated and watches was encouraged to head over toward the Dayhandler Complex, not that it was hard to see that was where the event would be.

Near the complex, but not too near of course, a large circle of stones and brick were set up, with an area in the middle dug out to help contain what would be the bonfire. Inside the circle were pieces of wood, sticks, and other kindling that would help set the fire ablaze in due time. For now it sat, for just a little longer.

The food had all been set out, the final platters just now arriving and being laid out across the table they’d moved out from the dining hall. A tent was set up over the food and drink table to keep it protected and make everything feel more official as well. Decorations were sparse, but they were also set up in a wide open area, so they didn’t have many places for decorations, not that they were needed anyway.

Opposite the food in the clearing, there was a setup with several large stone brick slabs held up by short brick legs, with coals burning underneath to make the surfaces hot. Meats were laid out across the surface to cook, and it became clear quickly this section was intended for Daywhers. It wasn’t the prettiest setup, nor the most extravagant, but Inakil had managed to get something special in for the Daywhers, since this was for them as well.

With the relay race over, it was time for the bonfire and music to begin. As the sun set, the bonfire was lit, announcing to everyone that the evening's festivities had begun and the music started for people to dance if they wished. It bore similarities to a Hatching Feast really, but with so many Daywhers around and Dayhandlers mingling with each other and others. The Daywher Social hoped to lift the spirits and camaraderie of the Dayhandlers, and to celebrate the recent Alpha fights.

She had heard about the Day Wher Dominance fights, she just had no interest at the time to see them nor to really be near where they were to take place. All was well, since she was just a candidate after all. She probably wouldn't have even been allowed to it. But now, she was allowed to go to the social that came after it. This was a new thing to her, but she found it interesting. She also thought that this might be a good way for her to attempt to meet some new people. Perhaps she will meet someone who will be able to prepare her for when she does bond to a day wher?

But then, that would involve her having to talk to someone, wouldn't it. She shrugged as she kept that from her mind and she wandered over to where the food was laid out. She made herself a small plate and grabbed a mug of cider before she found herself a seat and she sat down. Where or what she was supposed to do from here, she didn't honestly know, but perhaps someone would come to her? Or maybe she would find someone whom she could go over to? Either way, right now for her, it was a wait and watch game.

Something that she was used to doing, that didn't bug her a whole lot. She got to know people just by sitting right here, and she was curious to see what all people were going to do, or what the plan was for a social like this. She hasn't had one of these, since she lived at the Farming Ward of the Walled Hold, socials didn't happen very often. Especially since not a lot of people lived at the Farming Ward. She let the thoughts go and she watched everything while she drank her cider and picked at her food, eating it here and there.

Honestly, Natara was still feeling pretty sheepish about her new status, although Atumra was enjoying it thoroughly. She had expected him to do well enough in the dominance fights, but winning?

Now Natara was effectively compelled to act like she had authority. Shard it, apparently she did have authority. It was just, in some sense borrowed from Atumra. At least he earned it in combat instead of the way Weyrleaders were chosen.

Thankfully, she did not have to act much like a host, or social butterfly. She just had to be there, and act mostly competent. She should probably go . . .

Get some food, so that she had something to do with her hands. Atumra was laughing at her, but that was nothing new. Rarely did a day go by without one of them mocking the other, and they both liked it that way.

At some point she should probably try to meet the various candidates in the room. She could handle that, learn a little about what skills this next crop of handlers might bring in. After she ate.

So with his few turns spent at the weyr, Omi knew of the daywher dominance fights. As a handler he hadn't paid them to much attention. Especially since they took place while he'd been sleeping, and they didn't really affect him. Now they mattered though. He could one day be working with those who won. So Omi had paid a bit more attention this year and was actually surprised to see a change in leadership. If he was remembering correctly the last couple of turns had had the same leadership. It would be worth seeing if the direction of the pack shifted at all with a new male alpha. Omi wasn't to concerned with it at the moment, after all he was just a candidate and if he did somehow bond at some point in the next turn the leadership could very well change again.

Still there were so many dayhandlers and even some of the other candidates he didn't know very well and this was the perfect opportunity to meet them. Omi meandered toward the food table, picking out his favorites and making sure to grab the stuff that was really only made in the fall. There was something about the spices that were used specifically as the weather turned cooler. He couldn't resist the pull of cider either and made sure to grab a mug of it as well.

When it came time to choose where to sit there were plenty of open seats. Omi wasn't quite as comfortable wandering over toward where some of the handlers had grouped up. The sheer information and conversation he would get to listen to though... Then his eyes fell on one of his class mates. Nasassa was her her name but that's about all he knew of her. They hadn't really spoken or been assigned chores together just yet.

Omi made his way to her table and set his plate and mug down. "Do you mind if I sit here? I figured we candidates could hang out and people watch." He offered a smile.

Being wrapped up in thoughts could be a bad thing, especially when people randomly showed themselves. Well, not really randomly, but more like she wasn't fully there to actually notice another person show up. The reason she noticed someone come and sit by her, was the chirp and the peck on the hand that came from her garnet fancy flitt. She looked at Ruberia and noticed another person there and thankfully he spoke after she tuned in.

She smiled softly, her shy nature slowly seeping in. "Please do. The company would be nice." Her voice was soft as she spoke and she made some room for him to fully sit, even though it was still an empty table basically. Ruberia on the other hand looked Omiren and chirped before she started to pick at the fruit that was on Nasassa's plate. She didn't know what all was known about her, so she decided that perhaps a simple introduction would be a good start.

"I am Nasassa and this is Ruberia." At the mention of her name, the garnet looked at Omiren again and gave a small trill as she held onto a piece of fruit.

Elias' and Arcelias' first experiences with the dominance fights had been a good learning experience for them. They got to see firsthand how leadership among the Daywhers was decided, Arcelias challenged and learned a few things about trying to best a much more skilled and physically strong opponent, and Elias got to see how the new male Alpha and his handler were placed into their positions. He didn't need to nurse his daywher's pride in her loss to Kivasila, she was a long time Alpha, the first of their pack, she was very capable and it was any wonder she had lost.

*I'll just have to keep learning and working harder. I'll try again next season.* She had assured her handler not long after her loss, not taking it too hard at all. That left Elias able to contemplate how Natara was handling her newfound authority.

When the Daywher Social came again, Elias was happy to attend once more, though the one he remembered had been a few turns ago, he thought it would be great to see it become a regular tradition after the dominance season passed. A good way to build morale, and get to know new leaders if leadership was shuffled around. It was also a good time for him to become part of this community on a more personal level, or at least, that's what Arcelias had insisted.

Elias arrived to the event in some of his nicer clothes that weren't patched up or clearly work attire. His two fancy flitts were at his shoulders, while Arcelias' bronze was with her, riding on her back as he usually did when she wasn't moving too quickly. Once there, he checked out the food, feeling quite hungry, and remembering the first social, where Nia had suddenly lost it and dived after the food. He chuckled, remembering, and scratched her on the chin.

"Don't embarrass me this time," he teased he, sure she wouldn't, as that had been quite out of the ordinary for her, and these days she was content to beg for his food from his shoulder.

While he put himself together a plate from the food offered for the occasion, he spotted Natara not far. He admittedly didn't know her as personally as he might have liked, but he was comfortable enough to approach her. Once he did though, he gave a respectful bow of his head, so as not to spill his plate or disturb his flitts.

"Good evening, Copperhandler Natara, I wanted to pay you my respects. Congratulations on Atumra's victory in the recent Alpha challenges."

Omi was relieved when his offer wasn't rejected. He easily swung his legs over the bench seating and made himself comfortable. "Ah, thank you. I'm Omiren, it's pleasure to meet you both. I normally have a flitt or two of my own but I'm not sure where they've flown off to."

As if on que, his green and sunset appeared, both crooning happily to see food on his plate. "Here they are. The green is Pip and the other is Maude, and I'm sure they're happy to meet you as well." Sure enough Maude landed on the table and chirped a hello. As she grew, it was becoming more and more apparent she was a people person while Pip was still more than fine to hang out on his shoulder when he chatted with others.

"These pets are something else aren't they? They're more than pets, they're like companions or even family. I can hardly wait to see what it's like to bond to a daywher. How about you?" Omi grinned and set about cutting up a piece of roast and took a quick bite. He was quite hungry, even if the thought of bonding tried to tie his stomach in knots. Would it be like his previous bond or something closer? The candidate lessons had said that it was somewhere between a dragon and a wher, yet there were plenty of handlers and daywhers that had separated amicably and without serious repercussions.

She smiled softly when he sat down. It was nice to talk to someone, even if she was shy at first. But that was always something that she had to work out of anyways. "It's nice to meet you." But even as he spoke about his two bonds, they both seemed to appear from between at the same time. The sunset seemed to be a bit more willing to talk than the green, but not everything was the same just like not every person was the same.

She smiled at the two though and she listened at Ruberia gave a small trill in response. The fancy flitt seemed to be content at the moment stealing her fruit, so Nasa just pushed it over to the flitt to have to stay out of the way a little bit. She never got mad at Ruberia for stealing her food, it was part of the reason why Nasa got more food than she planned to eat honestly. "Oh yes, Rubiera is like a sister to me, even if she might be smaller and have wings." A chirp could be heard between bites of food for the flitt and it made Nasa chuckled softly.

The thought of impressing to a Day Wher though was a good thought. "I can't wait. I bet it will be nice." Granted, she knew as much as she was told in lessons, and that was about it. For all she knew, it could be horrible. But she wasn't going to let her mind think that way. "How long have you been at New Atricis?" If they were going to sit with each other, a conversation was going to be a nice little thing.

Omi glanced down at the tiny green clinging to him. Yeah they were like family. After the loss of Omiresk he couldn't have imagined surviving without the support of those close to him or Pip. She was like his support Starlizard. Maude was a welcome addition as well, her outgoing nature helped with talking to those around him, mostly. That wasn't to say he didn't have bad days, but they helped him get through them.

Omi smiled as Ruberia chimed in as she snacked on the fruit. They were like they're own people, it was cute. Having a wher, and by extension a day wher, was pretty different though. 'Lizards were kind of like young children. Whers were a whole other being. It was like working with another human guard... but with a mental link. Having that link again... was he ready?

Distracting himself with Nasassa's question, Omi was quick to reply. "I've been at the weyr for... four? turns. Something like that. I'm newish to this day wher candidacy though. It's something different alright. How about you? Are you weyrborn?" Nasassa didn't look super familiar but that didn't mean that she hadn't lived in the weyr the whole time. Omi had been pretty self focused for the last two turns or so.

Natara suppressed a laugh when she saw Elias teasing his fancy flitt. She would have to remember to protect her food this time, she thought. Elias hadn't been the only person who probably felt embarrassed that time, but. . .

Then Elias acted formal, bowing over his plate and greeting her. Natara twitched. She had been uncomfortable with the obeisance men showed women in the south, honestly it was more subservience than women generally showed in the north, not that she had ever spent much time in holds, where it was a real problem.

"Please don't pay me your respects," she said drily. "I have half a mind to make Atumra handle the paperwork since he's the one who wanted the position."
