The Daywher Social [Bonfire]

While a similar idea to the dragonrider apartments, the Dayhandler cabins are individual homes that are overall smaller than the apartment buildings, with size assigned by rank and needs, woth all cabins allowing Daywhers to come inside. Day wherlings move into these cabins after bonding.

Sevendays before, notices went up around the Dayhandler Complex and in the Dining hall about a Dayhandler centric event. The New Atricis Weyr Daywher Social, hosted by Rosehandler Inakil & Rose Dolcekil. It was an idea Inakil had gotten months ago, and after talking with Naji for some ideas, and talking to Micah about hosting such an event and getting the go ahead, Inakil had worked hard and made sure all of Atricis’ Dayhandlers, Daywhers, and Daywher Candidates knew about it. Inakil wanted to bring Atricis’ pack together more, to create a deeper community among themselves, and today was at last the day for it.

The event actually began in the later afternoon, with a relay race that people had signed up for that morning. The race had been great fun, and by the time it was over, the main event was completely set up thanks to the help of some Weyrfolk that lended their hand to the event. So with the relay complete, the bonfire neared, and everyone who participated and watches was encouraged to head over toward the Dayhandler Complex, not that it was hard to see that was where the event would be.

Near the complex, but not too near of course, a large circle of stones and brick were set up, with an area in the middle dug out to help contain what would be the bonfire. Inside the circle were pieces of wood, sticks, and other kindling that would help set the fire ablaze in due time. For now it sat, for just a little longer.

The food had all been set out, the final platters just now arriving and being laid out across the table they’d moved out from the dining hall. A tent was set up over the food and drink table to keep it protected and make everything feel more official as well. Decorations were sparse, but they were also set up in a wide open area, so they didn’t have many places for decorations, not that they were needed anyway.

Opposite the food in the clearing, there was a setup with several large stone brick slabs held up by short brick legs, with coals burning underneath to make the surfaces hot. Meats were laid out across the surface to cook, and it became clear quickly this section was intended for Daywhers. It wasn’t the prettiest setup, nor the most extravagant, but Inakil had managed to get something special in for the Daywhers, since this was for them as well.

As people filed around and began milling about, wondering when the bonfire would be lit as the sun set, Inakil and Dolcekil stepped up to in front of the bonfire to grab everyone’s attention.

“Thank you all for coming,” he began with, Dolcekil at his side. “The afternoon’s Relay went great, and I hope those who participated had fun. The rest of the night is for relaxing and enjoyment, so enjoy the foods and drinks I’ve been able to get the Weyr to provide for this event. I’d like to thank Dayhandler Leader Micah and Blood Zenucah for allowing me to plan this event, and for their help in making it possible. I’d also like to thank all of you for showing up. It is my hope that this event will bring all of us together into a closer community as we should be. We’re all part of the Pack, after all, and maybe in the future we could see this Daywher Social become an annual thing for us all to get to know each other better.”

With a pause, Inakil was handed a torch, and with a quiet thank you, he took it and held it up for everyone to see.

“Dayhandlers, Candidates, Daywhers, enjoy tonight. Dance, talk, and enjoy the food and drink.”

It might not have been the best opening speech for the event, but Inakil did his best as he had with the rest of it. With that though, he lit the bonfire with the torch, throwing it into the forming blaze once he was certain that the kindling had caught and the fire would take hold of the wood. The fire caught, and spread, and soon was a powerful blaze that towered into the air. Harpers that volunteered for the night took up their instruments and began playing.

.:: Day-Wher Candidate Halian ::.
Open
Halian wasn't quite sure how his daughter managed to convince him to join not one, not two but three somewhat social events in a short span of time. While the former hermit was certainly more interactive than he was when Halimila was a babe, the hunter in him still had troubles interacting with large crowds. Hal had to shake his head at that thought as he took in the crowd. "Not quite that big," He muttered to himself as he shifted in his newest boots. Hands fiddling with the tie Mila had insisted on, Halian watched as the host of the gathering lit the bonfire. Could this really be the new beginning he had been hoping for? Already their small family had grown with the addition of the small Reddite tucked into his vest. Around him there were folk around that he had yet to met, some he had met in passing and a few he shared lessons with. Should he be bold and approach someone?

Hal fidgeted with a button on his vest as he felt the young Starlet shift its sleep. Maybe it would be best to stay stationary until someone else grew bolder. Of course there was the option of collecting a small plate of food as he waited as well. Food and treats were always a good way to strike a conversation up with someone right? The was one last option that played in his mind's eye. One that once held great appeal, now held bittersweet memories. As the Harper's played, memories of dances and gatherings with Namila played in his mind. "What do you think little one?" He asked with a voice thick with emotion. "Should I try finding a partner?" He asked as one hand came up to stroke the red-toned Starlet through the material of his vest.

Mickell DayWher Candidate

Open
Getting ready for the gather after a well rounded run he stretched out his sore joins and gathered his things for the night. Mistress, his new Starlizard, Cuddled on his neck and crooned. She was sweet and oh so trusting, the only problem was the drama. She was a little dramitc at times, having moments of screeched during a serious moment, or at least when she thought it was serious. Once well rounded and ready for the bonfire he gave himself a quick once-over.

He reached the bonfire not long after it had started. With a quick look around he waved at a few candidates he knew, but for the most part hung back where not many stood. He was sure why he was here, mostly he figured because it was the right thing to do. He needed the discipline of another weyr to know how he should be and what he could become. Scratching Mistress with his left hand he sighed and quickly set to finding something to talk to.
Lareli & Blood Anubli
Open
Anubli huffed and groaned about the run for days. Lareli heard about the bonfire and spent several days getting his up and around for going into public. Sighing and standing before the large blood she gave him a stern look.

"Alright mister you get up and we are going to that bonfire.!" She went to get ready as Anubli grumbled and went for his meal. Ready and clean after a long soak Lareli looked over herself and turned around. Anubli and Stump were both looking at her, she grinned and on her way out gave Blew a quick scratch as he went into his little hole to hide.

As they got there she looked around and nudged Anubli, he hissed and went in seach of other males to run around with. She figured he may avoid the females for a while until he gets over his mood. Wondering into the crowd she smiled and waved at those she knew. As the fire was lit and started the fun, she looked for company. She found the food table and looked around for something to eat. She snatched a few rolls and then a few more. She liked the different foods she could gather. Each gathering seemed to bring out the best in the cooks, and she liked to savor it. As she moaned taking a bite of the meat and juice she smiled at a few others that were doing the same. Next she moved down to look for the bubbly pies.

After the relay race Shyran had returned to her room so she could wash up and change for the bonfire. Knowing she would be running or trying to balance an egg on a spoon Shyran had worn trousers for the race. Now that it was over it was time for something far more eloquent. Her family was well off so any dresses she had were well made and clearly beyond the means of the average Walled Holderite.

Pulling out her favourt gown, a deep wine color with golden embroidery across the bust with short sleeves. It was a light flowing material perfect for the heat of a Southern summer. A wide belt fitted snuggle against her flat stomach and she wore light slippers on her feet, mostly hidden by the long dress anyway. Her hair she did up into a braid and coiled it to the back of her head, leaving only the end to dip down just past her collarbone. A ribbon was tied to it which dangled down to about mid back, elaborately carved beads tipped each ribbon end.

It was a dress she normally only wore for Gathers or other special occasions or when she felt like dressing up. In the past she was more apt to just get a new dress made so as not to be seen wearing the same thing all the time but since deciding to come here she knew she would have to limit herself on the amount of dresses she bought. It wasn't as though her family cut her off but they weren't too pleased with her choice and felt since she wasn't going to be working at the shop she should learn to earn her own Marks if she wanted more than the allowance they gave her. Truth of the matter she was more than old enough to be making her own income and she definitely intended to, assuming Daywher Handlers did get an income beyond free room and board at the Weyr. If not well she did have other ways to earn money, she was born and raised a Trader afterall.

Once ready for the Bonfire, Shyran headed out to where it was being held. Before she could look around for Shiravani Inakil stepped up to the front and called for their attention. Shyran politely listened, thinking the speech wasn't too spectacular and had a feeling the Rosehandler was a bit uncomfortable with giving speeches. However it was sincere and meaningful and given most people here probably wanted to get to the food, drink and dancing more than listen to long speeches. Once the fire was lit Shyran waited till the crowd dispersed around her and started looking around for a familiar face.

She recognized a few of her fellow Candidates but her eyes settled on one of the oldest of the Candidates. Shyran thought he was the most mature of the bunch though he did seem uncomfortable in gatherings. She couldn't quite remember his name, Hellian or something like that. Or maybe it was Helen?

He did seem at a loss on what to do next now that the speech was over and the bonfire lit. She watched as he glanced at the tables laden with food were many Daywher folk were already congregating. She also noticed his glance towards the dance floor and decided dancing would be fun to do first as she wasn't feeling particularly hungry. She had taken a moment to have a quick snack before feeding her flits then getting ready for the bonfire. She knew the food would be there for awhile and she didn't want to be stuffed for most of the night till curfew.

"All you need to do is ask," Shyran said. Once decided on approaching the man she arrived just in time to hear him softly ask the question of finding a partner. Some people may have thought he was talking to himself but she noticed the odd shape in his vest and realized he probably had a firelizard or similar pet snuggled there. "My name's Shyran, just recently come to the Weyr as a Day Wher Candidate."

Naia had been pretty excited about the bonfire. She hadn't participated in the Relay, still preferring to avoid physical activity when she could despite her more fit physique as a Dayhandler, but she did watch it and had enjoyed it. Ptahia had too, but then again, he was in a good mood ever since he had managed to Catch Nerosali, his excitement for the coming eggs growing as Nerosali grew. As a caretaker he often got his turn with the eggs, but now that they were his progeny, it was different and he couldn't wait.

Of course, Naia had brought her sketchpad, always ready to lay out sketches at a moment's notice as long as she wasn't on for guard duty. She found get togethers like these and gathers to be some of the best times to get sketches. She could sketch the outfits, the overall scene, anything that caught her interest really. She was even all ready to toss it out over her lap and get ready to sketch with her writing stick, when something else caught her attention instead. Rather, it was Artisan.

The chroma flitt chirped curiously, making Naia look over at what grabbed his attention. A green starlizard on a young man's shoulders. Likely it was the glow, though he had seen starlizards before, he was always curious about them and their glow. So curious, in fact, that he launched from Naia's shoulders and took off toward the green starlizard that got his attention.

"Artisan no," Naia called out, but he would not be stopped.

He flitted over to the starlizard and her human, and upon realizing that he didn't have a place to land, he hovered a moment. His hide, which had been a shade of blue from Naia's dress, changed to the same green as the starlizard's hide as he whistled at her. He then began to fly up and dive and twirl around, perhaps enticing her to play with him.

"I'm sorry about him," Naia called to the owner of the green starlizard, her sketchpad tucked beneath her arm. "He likes other 'lizards. I should probably get him a companion sometime. His name is Artisan. Oh, and my name is Naia, Naia of Blood Ptahia to be precise." She smiled warmly to Mickell, waiting patiently for his introduction.

The Relay Race earlier in the day had been fun. Elias had considered participating, but a minorly twisted ankle from the sparring ring yesterday had kept him from being able to participate. He could walk fine, it was just a minor injury, but running on it would have been stupid and guaranteed a longer healing time. He wasn't going to make foolish decisions and injure himself more, especially not with a Daywher clutch on the way. He had chosen to accept candidacy some time ago, so it was his duty now to stand and make sure he didn't get too injured to stand.

Elias didn't go for the food first like most people did, but he did get some water to drink. He would allow others to go over the food and take what they wanted before he took his turn, his life as a man in Walled Hold still ingrained in his habits. So he sipped at his water, watching people come and go, wondering where Nia might have gone. She was usually right with him when she could be, so he was shocked when he saw the bright green fancy flitt in the middle of the food table shoving food into her mouth.

In fact, Elias was so surprised he choked on his water and sprayed some of it out to keep from choking too badly. She was usually so shy that she never did something like that, but it seemed that the siren call of food wouldn't be stopped.

"Nia! Nia stop that," he called to her in concern, raising his voice so it boomed louder than he usually spoke. Normally Elias spoke softly, keeping up a "gentle giant" sort of appearance so people wouldn't be intimidated by him, but in his surprise at Nia's antics he couldn't help but let his voice call out louder, grabbing the attention of a few startled Dayfolk.

As he reached the table he quickly reached out for Nia, snatching her up in his large hands easily and carefully, though she complained as she dropped what she was trying to shove into her muzzle.

"What has gotten into you little one?"

((Inakil to be posted soon. He is present though so feel free to tag him! I just wanted to get a post up sooner.))

Mickell looked around the bonfire and felt the soft cuddles of his star, Mistress would be his star through the days to come. He cooed to her and she cooed back. Chuckling he gave her a tender scratch and she rubbed her head on his cheek. If he had been a dragon he was sure his eyes would swirl those of content because he may not be comfortable with people but animals, especially babies, was his whole outlook on things. He gave Mistress a scrap of meat to keep her belly from crumbling.

A gust of wind much stronger then the wind current startled him as he looked up to see a unusual blue looking flit. "Artisan no," He glanced long enough to see who the Boise was only to turn back and see the blue change green. He was shocked at the color change and would have choked if he had anything in his mouth. Lifting his arm for the creature to purch, he was curious of the changing firelizard and wanted a closer look.

Hearing a woman's Boise he turned and saw what could only be the lizards owner, as she introduced both herself and the lizard.

"No worries. He is quite marvilouse if I say so. I'm Mickell , its nice to meet you Naia, blood Ptahia must be vary proud. He smiled warmly back. He wasn't going to be completely antisocial, this was a bonfire so everyone could get to know each other after all.

Natara had been a bit surprised at how much she enjoyed the relay race. She couldn’t say that her leg of it had been particularly physical, and she hadn’t taken it very seriously. But that was basically the point, and watching the day whers struggle over the obstacle course had been quite a bit of fun. Atumra wasn’t quite as flawless as he liked to pretend, and Natara had made sure to tease him for his flubs just as much as he teased her for dropping the egg. Of course, she would never be able to tease him enough to make up for all the times he mocked her sense of direction. Or lack thereof.

The bonfire was something else, though. She never felt quite right at parties or gathers. Either she dressed the way she normally did, and felt out of place because so many other women were wearing pretty dresses and looking their best, or she dressed up and felt constantly like she was moving all wrong, and had made some horrible mistake with her hair. Today was only a little different. The dress she was wearing left her legs and arms free to move, but now she was worrying that something would make it slip down, though she’d been assured that wasn’t actually a danger.

I don't think anyone but you would be very upset if it did slip, Atumra said, bored with this line of thinking.

Natara rolled her eyes. Obviously day whers didn’t wear clothing, so she didn’t exactly trust his estimation of how important it was to avoid accidental nudity.

I'm pretty sure at least some people would enjoy the party more, he continued, and she groaned quietly. Okay, maybe he did understand. He just thought she should have found someone to have fun with by now. She’d been at the Weyr over a turn after all.

Almost two, Atumra commented.

Which WAS odd to think about, she had been bonded to the copper daywher for almost two turns. She looked around at all the candidates at the bonfire. Some of them had probably been waiting for their chance at a bond almost that long, and she had fallen accidentally into one.

She was wandering down the buffet table, filling a plate and looking at all the bright dresses when a green flitt landed right in front of her and started grabbing food from the tray she had been about to reach for. That wasn’t exactly unheard of, even if it was a little bit rude, but the loud voice of the flitt’s human caught her attention as well. She looked up to see who was calling the flitt.

Well.

Apparently he was a candidate, so there probably hadn’t been an opportunity for her to meet him, but he was quite noticeable. Atumra was laughing inside her head. <<Oh, hush, I’m only going to be looking. He’s off limits as a candidate,>> she told him, as she saw the green’s owner come and scoop her off the table.

It's nice to know you do at least notice, her bondmate commented.

Natara picked up the food the flitt had dropped, and handed it to the candidate. “I think this is hers now,” she said. She wasn’t going to criticize. It wasn’t as if her two canines would have any better manners if they were here. Which was why she left them in her quarters, but flitts were not easy to leave behind, since they could just pop between to follow.

.:: Day-Wher Candidate Halian ::.
Shyran/LdyPyne
As focused as he was on Mavi, Halian barely noted that there was someone coming towards them. With one hand still laying protectively over the little Reddite, Hal turned slightly towards the young woman. Pulling on a small smile, the hunter nodded a greeting before introducing himself, "Halian. I'm usually a hunter by trade but I recently made the move to become a candidate myself." Using the hand still idling near his vest, Hal shifted the little starlet so that her tiny head was peering out. "This is Mavi. Cute little thing isn't she?" He continued as his thumb drifted over the creature's soft hide. "We'd love to share a dance with you if you don't mind a simple turn. I've never been talented on the dance floor," Hal admitted with a sheepish grin.

For his part Mavi was content to stay warm under Halian's vest. While there were new smells and sounds about, the little one was still quite tired from the excitement of the day so far. Maybe after a small nap she would venture out to explore. When Hal brought her head to the edge of his vest however thoughts of a nap flickered right out of Mavi's head! Chirping a hello to the other candidate, Mavi tilted his head to take in the glittering sparkles in the torch light. Should he attempt to find out just what that shining thing was? Should she stay with her Halian? Oh the choices! Taking a moment to share her dilemma with Halian, the tiny Reddite began to chatter at the human holding her.

"A Hunter?" Shyran responded with a mix of curiosity and awe. "That must really be challenging given all those wild Felines roaming the jungle. Is that why you decided to become a Daywher Candidate so they can help you in future hunts?"

Stepping a little closer so she could see the young Starflit Shyran was amazed at the soft glow of her bio luminescent crests and lure. "She's adorable! Far prettier than my two Fancy Flits but only because they can't match her charming glow."

"I will be glad to have a simple turn with you both on the dance floor," Shyran beamed. She did enjoy dancing and it didn't matter to her if Halian was no expert dancer. As long as he could lead in a simple dance she was fine. When the Gemlizard started chattering away at her human Shyran smiled, falling silent to give Halian a chance to make sense of the noise. After a moment an idea came to her which caused SHyran to break her silence.

"If you like I could call my flits to me and introduce them to Mavi and they could look after her while we dance," Shyran suggested. "Slick is especially good company and Hot Stuff can be very helpful once he gets over his original distrust of anything new. For a little one like Mavi he won't be distrustful of her at all."

Naia often got compliments on Artisan, and she admitted she did like them. Artisan, meanwhile, perched on the offered arm, giving an appreciative chirp before whistling at the starlizard on the young man's shoulder. Naia couldn't help her chuckle, especially as Artisan changed again, this time to match the color of Mickell's shirt, still whistling at his starlizard and bobbing his head at her, enticing her with the prospect of curiosity and play.

"Oh, yeah, definitely," Naia beamed about her daywher. "He's pretty proud of himself. It's his first clutch siring, so he's pleased. I can't wait to see the clutch and the hatchlings. Wouldn't it be amazing if there were other Chimeras like Nerosali in the clutch?" She caught herself there before she went off on a tangent about colors of daywhers and how much she admired the visual appeal of Chimeras. Really, it was perfect that she wound up with a unique firelizard that could change his color.

"You're a candidate, correct? Are you excited for the hatching too?"

Elias wasn't a blushing sort, but when the dayhandler handed him the food that Nia had dropped with what she said, he felt his neck warm with embarrassment. Luckily for him, his bronze skintone kept the mild blush from being fully noticeable, so it was easier for him to play it calm, nodding as he took the food and gave it to Nia for her to chew on some more.

"My apologies," he said to the dayhandler woman, bowing his head to her slightly. "I don't know what's gotten into her. Maybe it was all the food in one place. She's usually not like that. Ah, not that I should be making excuses, apologies." He ushered Nia onto his shoulder where she wrapped her tails around his neck and happily snacked on her treat.

"I hope she did not cause you much inconvenience with her misbehavior."
