A Wish In The Night -- {V'ric / Ember}

Not the large stone caverns that Weyr people are used to, these are buildings built on the top of the cliff, sometimes referred to as the Weyr Cliff. These buildings are all the same size, with multiple apartments for dragonriders to live in in each building. Because of space constraints, dragons sleep in large pavilions built around the dragonrider apartments.

It had been a night of celebrating, of imbibing and dancing, of letting go for one night before the rules and responsibilities of reality piled onto their shoulders for the rest of their lives. Daela had most certainly indulged in the beginning, allowing herself an extra drink or two while the party was just getting started, yet as the evening wore on, she began to wind down as well and kept up a pleasant fuzziness with just a few sips here and there. She'd spoken with everyone in her class, congratulated them, wished them the best of luck and she'd shared a dance with quite a few of them as well. They were all her friends, will all be remembered and should any of them call upon her, she would happily greet them with open arms no matter how long they go while life gets in the way.

Yet there was one to whom she seemed to linger the longest with, laugh the most with, and shared a few looks with throughout the night, and it would come as no surprise to their classmates that Daela and V'ric would share each others company more often than not. If it were possible, Weyrlinghood had brought these friends even closer than before, and while many suspected they were a couple, Daela would shake her head and insist they were just friends - good friends, but just friends... weren't they? She knew, could feel from V'ric that he wished for more, yet the brownrider had never pushed her, never pressured her for more than whatever she was comfortable with, and so their friendship had gone on, growing stronger. She trusted him with everything, could count on him to keep a secret, knew he would give her sound advice and that he trusted her the same way, they could talk to each other about anything and everything... just about.

The one subject that had yet to arise, was well... Rising. They both knew it was bound to happen, they both knew what it meant with female dragons, and yet neither of them had been able to broach that subject with the other. Daela because she was embarrassed, she'd never even had a boyfriend before, let alone allow someone to get intimate with her, and part of her was ashamed she was still pure when most people her age were definitely not. She thought, perhaps V'ric sensed some of her apprehension about the subject, so he'd never asked her about any of it and she'd never volunteered the information. It was fairly clear to her though that he was the more experienced one of them though, so if she were to ask anyone, it would be the brownrider... but, it frightened her too.

It was a thought that fluttered through her mind periodically during the night, but each time she pushed it away because now was not the time for such things. That's what she always told herself, 'not now, later' .... and yet when would later be? The moment Israfeth took Flight? She knew to had to be soon, but not tonight, they should be celebrating and enjoying themselves, not making awkward conversation. Once more, she shoved the thoughts aside and smiled at the brownrider, lifting her glass for the hundredth time tonight to clink against his own and took another sip of what she claimed was the last drink of the night. It was already getting quite late and the bonfire was nearly embers now in the pit, the party dying down to just a handful of their classmates and a few others, most everyone else having wandered off some time ago.

"We should get going soon, or else we'll be the last ones here and forced to clean up." The young woman teased softly, her lip curling back into something of a teasing smile at the brownrider beside her. "But I'm not really sure if I'm ready for bed yet either, it's too nice of a night still." Daela mused softly, glancing around them at the clear skies and pleasant breeze, the best kind of night to wander or star gaze, or curl up by a fire with a good book, or lounge on a couch talking with your best friend until Rukbat rises. "What do you want to do Vare?" She asked, looking back to the young man and felt the faintest flutter in her heart at the mere sight of him, his nearness and she could smell his musk so clearly whenever he was this close.

It had been a delightful evening filled with laughter and joy and the knowledge that no longer would there be lessons to deal with come first thing in the morning. Certainly there would be times when getting up at the crack of dawn would still be a priority, and maybe some of his old habits would die hard, but Vare was looking forward to no longer having to hear the Weyrlingmasters instruct them, though they had done a fine enough job preparing them for a life in the Wings.

Tonight wasn't time to think about that now. Tonight he should focus on other matters. Enjoyable matters like how good the wine tasted after so long, or how he was finally able to have a whiskey in what seemed like forever. Or how amazing Daela, his dancer of his heart, looked right now. He couldn't help but stare at her from across the field as she spoke to another classmate, and when she glanced in his direction he lifted his glass and winked, then turned back to ask for a fill again, trusting that they would find one another soon after, like they always seemed to through the distances that often struck between them.

And so it happened, just a few hours later, that they managed to stumble back together again, and he smiled at her and offered his arm instead of his hand though it was the latter that he wanted to give her so much. Eventually, somehow, it happened to switch around, and though he kept things loose, he felt his heart flutter, felt his hand quiver every so often as they walked and talked together, and he was certain that he would stumble around his own words when he finally came upon one subject in particular that he'd danced around himself all throughout training.

His feelings for her, the fact that he wanted... her to know how he felt. But he'd kept it to himself for so long, he wasn't sure if she'd even want to hear, and so he kept it quiet, hidden, away. But maybe tonight he'd tell her, without expectations of anything more happening, because he would never expect that to happen. He even knew how he'd set it before her. He felt Rumith strengthen his intent, and as they walked, he heard Daela speak and his resolve melted some, but there would be time later, he decided, and so he listened.

What did he want to do? He considered it for a moment, perhaps two, before a decision was made. "We could find someplace to sit and chat. Maybe get off of our feet. Look up at the stars." He smiled at those thoughts, thinking he also wouldn't mind being alone with her so they could have some privacy, the first perhaps they would truly have had for a long while. But he didn't want to seem like he was that eager, and so he kept it to himself. "What about you, dancer? What are you eager for?"

"We could find someplace to sit and chat. Maybe get off of our feet. Look up at the stars."

This close, she could practically feel the vibrations of his voice in the air around her, and she wanted to shiver a little in delight yet suppressed the feelings that fluttered in her stomach. Stargazing, that's what she'd just been wondering as well, so it sounded like a delightful idea for an end to this splendid evening.

"What about you, dancer? What are you eager for?"

Ever the gentleman though, even though she'd been the one to ask his opinion, Vare always managed to bring it back around to her decision. Daela smiled softly and glanced up at the man beside her and soft dimples started to crease her cheeks. "I was actually just thinking about maybe laying around, looking up at the stars, so that sounds wonderful." She said, using this common thread of thought to make the choice for them.

The chimerarider rose to her feet once more, beckoning the brownrider to follow and she slipped away from the dying bonfire and out into the night beyond. They weaved through the game tables and out onto the grassy areas where blankets had already been strewn about, and Daela spotted one she liked and dipped down to retrieve it, bundling it up in her arms.

They walked together for a time, quietly enjoying the peaceful sounds of the evening and the comforting presence of the other. After a time of walking, perhaps toward the lake shore for the subtle sounds of the lapping waves during their gazing, Daela shifted the blanket into just one arm so her hand could hang free at her side. It was a subtle invitation, it was a quiet longing, and she wondered if he would take up that hand in his own as he'd wanted to all night long.

She had taken the suggestion and turned it into a shared option between the both of them. Something they could share with one another and that made his heart sing. Vare almost touched his chest where his heart was thrumming with happiness but he refrained from doing so and instead allowed himself to walk with her towards the blanket, then down towards the lake, a smile on his face as he realized where they were going. The perfect backdrop to their stargazing, the perfect backdrop to tell her of his feelings for her...

He wasn't sure what made him look down between them. Perhaps the wind, or maybe Rumith, or his own need to look, but whatever the cause he saw her hand freed up between them and the corner of his mouth twitched. He knew what he was going to do and he hoped that she didn't mind; his hand slid against hers, then his fingers, feeling bold, stretched against her palm before sliding between hers and clasping them together. A soft sight escaped him, and his heart, oh his heart, wouldn't stop beating a soft happy pat against his ribs; he wondered if she could feel it through their pressed palms, and then thought himself silly for such a thing.

The moment she felt his hand slip into her own, Daela's heart seemed to skip a beat and her lips curled into a soft, secret sort of smile. Yet, despite how much she wanted to pull him closer, or even acknowledge this little touch, the chimerarider kept her composure and tried to act casual. Her fingers curled ever so slightly into his own, the silent acceptance and need to be close as her hand held onto his without any intention to let him go. She couldn't quite tell who's heart was thudding louder though, feeling the flutter of his own and the skipping beat of hers, each of them with unspoken thoughts on the tips of their tongues.

They walked for a little while longer, hand in hand, feeling that sort of euphoria from even just the simplest of contacts that breeched the boundary between friends and ... something more. Daela felt that line beginning to blur, those thoughts coming unbidden to her mind, thoughts that would make her blush if she lingered too long on them. However, this was not the time, not the place... was it? No, she shouldn't bother him with such things tonight, shouldn't even bring up the Flight let alone anything like that...

"It's a beautiful night for stargazing... Don't you think?" She found herself saying, a lame attempt at conversation when so much else was running through her mind.

"Yes." He found himself agreeing, eyes briefly, but only briefly, on the sky. They didn't stay there for long, only able to linger there for so long before he found himself looking at her again. How many times had he done such things, more often than not on purpose, so many times though it had been unbidden; gaze lured to her very presence by some unseen force, tempted there by the shared beatings of their hearts.

He found himself smiling and gaze her hand a squeeze, because he wasn't finished. It was a beautiful night for such activities, and perhaps she would have anticipated what he was about to say next, but it slid from his tongue, as easily as some of the overly sweet things he would have said in the past to try and gain her attention. Done now because it was meant as sincere rather than as an attempt to try and gain sweetness from her. "But it doesn't even begin to compare to you, dancer."

And then he did something he had never done before; he lifted her hand slightly, and bent forward to press his lips to her fingertips, and he had to close his eyes as he did it. The contact was the first, and barest, hint of intimacy he had experienced since "courting" her had begun, and it made him shiver with something long ago buried. He smiled against her hand a moment, then pressed his cheek to her before standing. "Sorry... I shouldn't..."

"But it doesn't even begin to compare to you, dancer."

When he complimented her, calling her more beautiful than even the starry skies above, Daela couldn't help the blush that crept up to her cheeks. He had called her pretty on more than one occasion, but something about now... the way he said it, holding her hand, the stars overhead, the serenity of the night... It caused her heart to flutter anew.

And then, he was lifting her hand up to his lips and her breath caught in her throat, anticipation rising... When his lips pressed against her fingers, she felt her heart leap in her chest and a sudden blush swept her plump cheeks, a rosy hue that certainly gave away the flutter of her heart. "Vare..." She said his name breathlessly, her lips parted and more words itching to fall from them, but she stopped herself when he apologized.

For a moment, she was quiet, she didn't know what to say, what to do.... she wanted... more. She felt bad even thinking it, this was her best friend, this was V'ric, the man who'd been with her since she basically got to the Weyr, he was... everything to her. Allowing this to go any further could ruin everything... could change everything... In a good way, or a bad way?

"It's okay Vare... I... I.... liked it." The chimerarider said with the softest smile, a secret smile meant just for him.

"It's okay Vare... I... I.... liked it."

Did that mean... no, no. It wasn't even possible. He didn't dare hope it could mean that. He felt his heart begin to flutter in his chest and he wanted so much to have all the wisdom that Rumi seemed to possess in the folds of her brown wings, and yet all he could do, all he could stand, was to hold...

What was he doing?

Pulling Daela closer of course.

And what if she ran from him?

He would be devastated.

But soon enough he found himself drawing her to him more, and a little more, until she was just close enough to put his arms around, but something stopped him. That fear, that voice from just a moment before telling him if he did she would run. But she had liked the kiss to her fingers, and maybe she would like an arm around her - maybe she would like two. It was slow, and it was hesitant, but with his eyes still gathered to a point by her own, he slipped his free arm around her, and continued to hold her hand like a lifeline, as though doing so meant that they wouldn't lose this moment together. "Do you mind this?" His voice was soft and tentative, hoping to elicit that same secret sort of smile she had gifted him with only a little while prior.

There was a flutter between them, something opening up... and the brownrider was subtly and carefully pulling her closer, stepping in closer and Daela was apt to follow his lead. She could feel him so near, the warmth of him radiating, the scent of him permeating her senses, she could feel it going to her head. And then, he was even closer, a strong arm moving around her waist and settling against her side, holding her close and she could feel her heart pounding in her chest, a mile a minute as she glanced up shyly at the young man.

No, she didn't mind it at all and there was a little shake of her head to silently say as much... She enjoyed being this close to him, the way it felt to have his arm settled at her hips, to be this close to him, close enough to... kiss. Even just the thought made her blush even harder, made her practically yearn for it... though she'd never really kissed anyone before... would she even be any good at it? So many thoughts, so many 'what ifs', she didn't know what to do, what to say...

That smile never faded from her lips, if anything only curling a little wider, a secret happiness beginning to shine through that look. Wasn't this something they had both wanted, something they knew was going to happen eventually? Why hide from it, why not embrace it? She could feel his desires, the feelings the brewed just under the surface, the emotions he was so ready to bear and she didn't even think about it as she leaned into the brownrider, wrapping her own free arm around him. Though, their hands remained firmly entwined and even gave his own a little squeeze, perhaps even... encouraging him for more...

Here they were, in a place and position he could have only dreamed of. Instinct told him what to do, but mind tried to ignore heart insisting he didn't want to run her off, that her friendship meant so much more, and yet how was he to ignore the way she smiled, the way she leaned in? Vare leaned closer himself, his own smile just for her, the expression he wore something that he would never be able to erase from his face whenever she was around. Faranth, she could make him leap over the moons without so much as a second thought, and he would do it over and over and over again...

Before he knew it, his face was in front of hers, and he knew what was going to happen before he was even doing it. His face softened just a touch, as if asking her if she was sure, but if she wasn't... they wouldn't be standing as they were. He slid his arm away to reach up and cup her cheek, to touch her face and caress her skin. "Dancer..." He murmured, breath soft against her, before he moved in that little inch or so to press himself to her, and that softness beneath his mouth made the lights behind his eyes explode, and he was certain nothing would ever taste as sweet ever again as her lips.
