P'list hadn't forgotten
about the little egg Jasmine had found. He'd asked around the Weyr, and no one had any gemlizard eggs (and he'd clarified that was what it was, asking how the gossamer eggs looked different), let alone any missing. Apparently, she had found it somewhere out in the wild.
It was cute to watch her hover over it, if a bit odd considering how disinterested she apparently was in her own eggs. (He was still quite certain she'd laid a few the turn before, but had no idea where she'd left them. Apparently not anywhere in his apartment.) After he had moved the egg to Fluff's unused cat bed, she had become fiercely territorial over the bed, and she chased both Fluff and Bumble away several times a day.
Obviously, he knew the egg would probably hatch eventually. It could have been a dud, which would have been a problem when he ultimately had to get it away from Jasmine and dispose of it, but it was likely to hatch, he just wasn't thinking about it. He imagined it would hatch while he was away, during his duties, not in the middle of the night, with Jasmine urgently demanding he wake up.
He stumbled to her little corner with the catbed, and the tiny egg was practically vibrating. Poor Jasmine was so confused, and P'list sighed, struggling to remember what he'd been told about gemlizards. He didn't need to keep meat on hand to bond with it, they...
He wrinkled his nose. They wanted blood, like with whers. He wondered for a moment if he should encourage it to bond with Jasmine, but she was glaring at the vibrating egg, and he thought she might not even have understood that there was a growing baby lizard in it. Had she just thought it was a special toy? One that was now acting strangely, instead of just sitting there for her to cuddle and protect?
An orange head poked its way out of the shell, and oh. It was a copper. If he remembered correctly, the little thing was probably going to end up female, bonded to him, and P'list sighed. He scooped the little egg into his hand, with the lizard still fighting his way out. Another little lizard to hide eggs instead of brooding them, though without wings, this one might not be able to hide them somewhere P'list couldn't find them.
"Alright, little one," he said, wincing and looking away while he let the creature bite his hand. Jasmine was settling down, classifying the lizard as a new member of the family instead of the destroyer of her tiny toy, and she would probably have forgotten about the egg in a day or two. He would feed the new pet in the morning, and he let it curl into his hand for the moment. "Too tired to think of a name right now," he whispered, before going back to bed. Jasmine was still curling possessively into her little catbed, now without the egg, but P'list was sure that in a few days she would be back to demanding a place on his pillow.
