When she let her mind wander, the tune came out and she barely even noticed when she started humming. Thankfully the girl beside her didn't seem to mind either, so the two of them worked for a time in a contented sort of quiet companionship. The simple motion of moving the rake over the sands, gathering up all the little shards she could find into a pile to later be placed into a bucket, it was easy to let her mind wander to the last few days and the changes in her life. Daela still didn't entirely know what it meant to be a candidate, to be a dragonrider, to be...part of the Weyr, and while she took her lessons quite seriously, she could do without the menial chores. What were those supposed to teach them? Replacing glows, doing laundry, cleaning the...latrines, that was all servants work and Daela was no ones' servant. Of course, she'd been told that candidates were of such a low rank, but did they truly need to stoop so low as to clean the privy? That was just...disgusting.
Cleaning the Sands, that was fine though, despite the stifling heat that embraced the cavern, and at least her head wasn't pounding this time. The calm quiet of the girl beside her helped Daela more than she would ever know, because it was grounding to have that peace to draw from when her gaze lifted into the Stands once more. It was as she was glancing about that she felt the hitch in the other candidate, the surprise of something and her attentions were drawn back to the girl beside her. Daela looked back in time to see the awestruck look on the candidates face as she lifted the marks from the sands, and then the questioning feeling in her gut as the girl glanced about. She was fairly certain those must be part of the rewards, so when the girl looked over at her, Daela gave her a congratulatory smile and then set back to her own work...only for her rake to bounce off something that wasn't a shard.
"I think you're right." The southerner responded in kind, a soft sort of smile inching over her lips as she knelt on the Sands, reaching to inspect what it was. She withdrew a little pouch from the sands and brushed off as many grains as she could before pulling open the drawstrings. The scents caught her first, the sweet smell of fruits and salty hint of the nuts and seeds within and slender fingers dipped inside to pick out a dried piece of fruit first. "A little snack it seems." Daela said pleasantly, moving to take a step toward the other candidate and extended the pouch toward her as she took the first bite. "Would you like some?" She asked politely, glancing around to anyone else nearby to offer some as well. With the Leaders watching, it was best to make a good impression and share what she could with those around her, and she spotted a quiet young man working close by, keeping himself a little removed from the others though the flitter on his shoulder was keeping him company.
After the other girl had a chance at the snack, Daela smiled warmly at her and then took a few steps toward the young man, almost as if trying to bring the little group of quiet workers together in her own way. "Pardon, but would you care for a snack? Or your flitter?" The southerner asked softly, extending the pouch toward him as well, sharing the small bounty since it seemed he hadn't found anything yet.
