In Service of the Queen { Tag } Dragon Candidates

A large natural cavern found by the initial expedition. It has been cleared out and filled with sand. Naturally flowing hotspring pools inside the cavern keeps this cavern warm enough for dragon eggs, but also makes it very humid with all the steam from the hotspring waters.

When she let her mind wander, the tune came out and she barely even noticed when she started humming. Thankfully the girl beside her didn't seem to mind either, so the two of them worked for a time in a contented sort of quiet companionship. The simple motion of moving the rake over the sands, gathering up all the little shards she could find into a pile to later be placed into a bucket, it was easy to let her mind wander to the last few days and the changes in her life. Daela still didn't entirely know what it meant to be a candidate, to be a dragonrider, to be...part of the Weyr, and while she took her lessons quite seriously, she could do without the menial chores. What were those supposed to teach them? Replacing glows, doing laundry, cleaning the...latrines, that was all servants work and Daela was no ones' servant. Of course, she'd been told that candidates were of such a low rank, but did they truly need to stoop so low as to clean the privy? That was just...disgusting.

Cleaning the Sands, that was fine though, despite the stifling heat that embraced the cavern, and at least her head wasn't pounding this time. The calm quiet of the girl beside her helped Daela more than she would ever know, because it was grounding to have that peace to draw from when her gaze lifted into the Stands once more. It was as she was glancing about that she felt the hitch in the other candidate, the surprise of something and her attentions were drawn back to the girl beside her. Daela looked back in time to see the awestruck look on the candidates face as she lifted the marks from the sands, and then the questioning feeling in her gut as the girl glanced about. She was fairly certain those must be part of the rewards, so when the girl looked over at her, Daela gave her a congratulatory smile and then set back to her own work...only for her rake to bounce off something that wasn't a shard.

"I think you're right." The southerner responded in kind, a soft sort of smile inching over her lips as she knelt on the Sands, reaching to inspect what it was. She withdrew a little pouch from the sands and brushed off as many grains as she could before pulling open the drawstrings. The scents caught her first, the sweet smell of fruits and salty hint of the nuts and seeds within and slender fingers dipped inside to pick out a dried piece of fruit first. "A little snack it seems." Daela said pleasantly, moving to take a step toward the other candidate and extended the pouch toward her as she took the first bite. "Would you like some?" She asked politely, glancing around to anyone else nearby to offer some as well. With the Leaders watching, it was best to make a good impression and share what she could with those around her, and she spotted a quiet young man working close by, keeping himself a little removed from the others though the flitter on his shoulder was keeping him company.

After the other girl had a chance at the snack, Daela smiled warmly at her and then took a few steps toward the young man, almost as if trying to bring the little group of quiet workers together in her own way. "Pardon, but would you care for a snack? Or your flitter?" The southerner asked softly, extending the pouch toward him as well, sharing the small bounty since it seemed he hadn't found anything yet.

As Sunaia took the opportunity to lean on her rake, to catch her breath while watching the other candidates free their discovered prizes from the sand, she felt the tines connect with something. Using the tool to turn that patch over and she found herself in possession of a small leather pouch. Ever careful, she made certain to shake it clean of sand-- as best she could; there was no real escape from the stuff out here-- before tilting the contents into her palm. Marks. Marks! Two of them, and whole pieces, not fractional or divided!

She hadn't ever wanted for anything, not once in her life, and often had more than others. But while she'd had a little pocket change here or there, special for Gathers or her Turnday, to find herself with whole marks all of her own just for doing as they would have been required to do anyway...

It certainly went far towards showing her an aspect of K'rios' nature, as one of the candidatemasters. And now she had funds, which meant she'd just been gifted daydreams too. What to do with them! With two, she might afford a new blouse, or a bracelet, or... a gift for her father? What sort of bottle of spirits could be had for two marks? Maybe something worthy of sitting on his shelf, appropriate for guests...?

She'd been lost in reverie but Aranrod's quiet voice called her back to the present-- and a healthy dose of self-consciousness. Quickly she replaced the pieces in their little pouch and strung it through her belt before taking the rake in hand again. "Oh yes, I'm sorry," she murmured back in kind, "I lost track of where we were."

Sunaia bent to work again but tilted a smile at the other candidate. She seemed the thoughtful sort. Generous too, and she was touched by the offer made. "That's very kind of you. I didn't mean to fall behind. If we get enough of the big pieces, we could start a basket chain. Get them moved out more quickly," she mused with a quick glance towards the others labouring nearby.

"Fyrn, that's a cute nickname," Kole couldn't help but comment with an amused grin. He couldn't help but come off flirty right now, she was just so cute, and watching her get flustered here and there before had endeared her to him enough that he wanted to get to know her a bit. "I think that's pretty normal, getting nervous around higher-ups. Maybe once you're a dragonrider you will find it easier." All the while, Kole kept up a friendly, conversational tone as he worked, pausing only a few times but trying not to get too distracted so he wouldn't get scolded for slacking off. When Fyrn found something though, he couldn't help but stop and look over to see what fun little treat she might have found. If he'd been able to, he might have read over her shoulder, but, much to his private shame, he still couldn't read that well, so he stopped leaning over to see what she had when it was clear that is was scrolls with writing on them. He chuckled when she seemed amazed at whatever the scrolls said though.

"Oh? What'd they say?" At that moment, Kole unearthed his own surprise in the sand, and while he waited for Fyrn to answer his question, he brushed the sand off the small pouch and picked it up. Curiosity getting the better of him, he opened it up, and made an "ooh" of excitement when he found the Sea Glass Candy inside. Immediately he popped one in his mouth happily, before holding the pouch out to Fyrn.

"Want one?"

Raevin did notice that some people found things in the sands. It seemed that K'rios' promise of fun things hidden in the sands was right. Of course, Raevin hadn't found anything yet, but he didn't mind as he worked away quietly by himself. When he took a moment to catch his breath, giving his arms a break from all the raking it was actually Torin that alerted him to one of the other candidates coming over. The still young bronze chattered unhappily before Raevin could calm him.

"Sshh, sshh, it's ok," he reassured Torin before he chased away the young woman that was coming over. She'd never done anything untoward to him, and he was sure she was one of the newer members of the barracks too. That reassured Raevin, which in turn helped Torin to calm down a little more so at least he didn't grumble like an angry cat.

"Pardon, but would you care for a snack? Or your flitter?"

Raevin couldn't help but smile at that. Of course, he knew it was a little bit because she was pretty, but it was mostly the kindness she showed. "That's kind of you, thank you," he responded, taking a piece of her trail mix for himself. After a moment of thought, he gestured to Torin on his shoulder. "If you don't mind, could you give him a piece too? He'll calm down when he realizes you're not a threat." Hopefully, if Raevin could get Torin to see one less candidate as a threat then he wouldn't be so vigilant in his protection of Raevin, so long as the bullies stayed away.

"Oh, I'm Raevin by the way, I don't know if we've properly met before."

Niomi didn't want to be rude, but she was also a little curious what the girl might have found. She offered her own zone a few more rakes as the girl beside her unwrapped the small package, revealing a small pile of nuts and berries. Oh! That's clever. The Candidate offered Daela a small smile as she picked out a piece of fruit for herself. But then the girl was kind enough to offer her a piece. Niomi blinked in brief surprise, then offered the girl a warm smile as she picked a small piece out, careful not to grope around in Daela's prize with her fingers, ”Oh! Thank you very much!” Niomi tried the nut she had gotten, surprised at the rich, salty nutty flavor of it.

She watched the girl with soft eyes as she offered a piece to a boy nearby that Niomi hadn't even noticed yet. He had one of those miniature dragon things though, and she gasped a little as the creature bristled at her raking partner's approach. But the young man calmed his flitter, and as Daela offered him some, the ex-drudge returned to her own scouring of the sands. A small shard or two of egg turned up, which she added to her scrap bag, and then the sound of her take dragging the sound changed. Had she found something else already?

Leaning down, she pulled a small pouch that sounded like broken glass as it moved. Perplexed, she opened it gingerly. It wouldn't do to slice herself. But would the Candidate masters have put something so dangerous as a prize? That didn't sound right to her. Glancing into the pouch, it still took her a moment to realize what she was looking at. It looked like broken, colored glass. But it also almost had a frosted look to it. As she puzzled over the contents, she caught a whiff of sweetness, and she realized what she was holding.

Once before, Cataren had snuck her a couple small pieces of glass candy, a sort of hard sugar that took one a good while to suck on before it dissolved all the way. With a bright grin, she stepped over behind Daela and the young man, quietly offering the pouch of glass as well, ”Maybe you two want some of this too? And one for your friend, if he can have such a thing?” She glanced a bit apprehensively towards the firelizard, obviously a bit unsure around the creature. After all, she had never really been around one.

As she approached the young man, there was a gentle demeanor about her for she could see the poise of the lizard on his shoulder and didn't want the little thing to feel threatened by her. It boded well then that she came bearing gifts then too and her smile widened when the young man accepted, reaching to take a piece from the pouch. "You're welcome." Daela said softly and gave the slightest nod of her head in a subtle sign of respect and nicety. For the moment spent as he picked out his choice, she couldn't seem to pull her gaze away from him, the high cheekbones and sharp angles, with piercing blue eyes that peeked out from behind brown locks. Was every man in this Weyr just bred to be handsome or something? Or was it because she was a teenage girl coming into her own, dumped into the middle of a strange new beautiful world that wasn't meant to last? When he looked back to her, Daela had to shake her thoughts free and it helped that her gaze shifted to the flitter on his shoulder instead.

"It would be my pleasure." She responded in kind, her smile growing a little fonder as she reached into the pouch for the plumpest piece of dried fruit she could find. "What's his name?" The young woman asked politely, hoping to use the flitters' own name to soothe him as she offered up the tempting morsel for the bronze. She held out her hand, palm up toward the flitter and stepped in just a little closer so the 'lizard could reach it without having to leave his perch, though it brought her closer to the young man as well. Daela glanced between them and the slightest hint of a rosy color touched her cheeks before it faded as quick as it had come.

"Oh, I'm Raevin by the way, I don't know if we've properly met before."

The young woman smiled softly for him, yet the slight shake of her head was more akin to say that this was their first meeting, or she would have remembered it. "Nice to meet you Raevin." The southerner said, another proper sort of nod given to the young man, though perhaps this time was a hint of a cheekiness to it as her smile widened a little. "My name is Daela, and I don't think we have, or I would have remembered you." The candidate added her tone perhaps a little coquettish, though that blush threatened to return much more adamantly this time. Did she just say that out loud? Oh shards and shells...

Thankfully, Daela was saved from utter humiliation by the other candidate, the young woman walking over with a new prize to share and she gratefully stepped back, albeit a little sheepishly with a glance at Raevin. As the pouch was offered, she would admit to being curious, though allowed the young man the chance to take the first piece and see if it was something his 'lizard could enjoy as well. When he pulled free a small piece of what looked like frosted glass, she quirked a brow at it for a moment before realizing it wouldn't actually be glass, that would just be silly. When the bag was offered to her, Daela reached in tentatively, and pulled out a triangular piece of seafoam green...glass. She rubbed it in her fingers for a moment and the powder came off, to which she tasted on her tongue and found it to be sugary sweet. A pleased smile crept over her lips as she tucked the sweet into her own pouch of trail mix then.

"Thank you, I think I'll save that for later." Daela said as she closed up the little pouch, although she wasn't entirely sure what to do with it now. Her skirts had no pockets though she could put her hand through the drawstrings to keep it close, but wouldn't that get in the way of working? K'rios had mentioned putting their things up in the Stands for safe keeping, though if she or the other candidates wanted another nibble it would be harder to reach. Watching Raevin's flitter gave her an idea though, as no one had scolded the young man for his pet on the Sands the way they had the other day during the Hatching, so presumably, it was safe for Cadence to be here with her too.

The candidate had left the fancy flit back in the barracks, curled up fast asleep on her pillow, yet Daela knew that slumber wouldn't last long and indeed the moment she prodded for the flit Cadence was ready to respond. The puff of cold air marked the arrival of the unique fancy flit and for a brief moment Daela wondered if anyone was going to shout at her and have her send the flit away, yet no one did and the scarlet hued creature came to rest on the young woman's shoulder. She glanced back at the other two candidates, particularly Raevin and wanted to make sure the arrival of her own pet didn't set his off at all, though she did hastily reach up to give the fancy the little pouch of trail mix for safe keeping, so she could send Cadence away if she wasn't welcome.

Things were going well, and that pleased K'rios to no end. The candidates were cleaning the sands with vigor, and seemed even more eager as prizes were revealed, and better yet, there seemed to be a teamwork effort forming between them as they worked. He noticed many instances between them of sharing taking place, and that was something he had hoped to see, something he knew that would please Bellatrix to no end when she discovered the results in his report, both written and verbal. He glanced at his father and Safry, wondering what they had to say about it all, but from the looks he saw, he supposed they were pleased; from the lack of anger coming from the great queen, he supposed she was pleased as well.

Even so, his curiosity got the better of him, and he turned politely to the Weyrwoman, bowing his head in her direction when he had her attention. It wasn't that he meant to interrupt whatever she'd been saying to their Weyrleader, but simply that he had hoped to have a moment of her time to sate the thought that was on his mind. It would aid in his report, and further treat the candidates later should he receive a positive response in his query. "If you don't mind me asking, dearest Weyrwoman, how do you and our lady queen feel about the job that her candidates are doing on her sands?"

This wasn't so bad, Vare was finding, digging through the sands. It was actually a great distraction from the disappointment just a few days prior, and gave him a bit of a lesson on what went on in the Weyr, besides. He didn't know if he would find anything like everyone else was, and truthfully he figured he was just going to give away anything that he did find - except when he noticed others were finding food. That was something he would hold onto like a possessive bird. He liked his food. He would happily share it, but he had no intentions of giving any of his away.

When his shovel came into contact with a slip, he frowned and decided this must be one of those elusive pieces of something in the sand. He bent to pick it up and brushed it off, looked it over, and gave a little smile. A bit of free time eh? Well, once upon a time, he knew what he would have used it for, but for a little while now... well, that was strange. He scratched his nose, trying to remember the last time he'd snuck out of the barracks for a little midnight fun, and he couldn't recall. Had it really been that long?

Well, in any case, he knew why, and he didn't need it. With no craft, and no reason to keep hold of it, he needed to get rid of it. He didn't want anything in return, but he caught sight of Laikanu, and thought he might want it for his own... pursuits. Grabbing his gear, and deciding to shift location, he moved over to the other man and gave him a tap before holding out the free time ticket. "Hey, I don't want anything for it, but thought I'd offer this. Think you might want it?"
