Snooping [Open]

A large natural cavern found by the initial expedition. It has been cleared out and filled with sand. Naturally flowing hotspring pools inside the cavern keeps this cavern warm enough for dragon eggs, but also makes it very humid with all the steam from the hotspring waters.

Nali had gotten to stand at her first hatching a few months back, but she had been left standing, dashing her hopes of being one of those candidates who Impresses her first time around. She didn't remain disappointed for long though, after seeing other candidates who had stood far longer left standing. She had so much time to stand at hatchings, she had nothing to be truly upset about, she had decided, and so just looked to the next hatching with excitement once more.

However, there was a decent period between Paiseantath's clutches and Soquilith's clutches, and Lennoth had yet to Rise her first time, though people were projecting that might be soon given her age now. Either way, Nali was getting impatient for the next clutch to be laid on the sands. That was what led her to the hatching sands for dragons today on her free day. She walked up to the large entrance to the sands, peeked inside and looked around. No female in sight, or a clutch in sight. The large hot cavern was empty. Of course it was though, no female had clutched yet after all. She thought perhaps Soquilith might have clutched now, but perhaps she needed a little more time.

With the sands empty, Nali almost just walked away, but then paused, and looked back to the sands. Honestly, she hadn't really snooped around at the sands before, not being able to do so with a female with a clutch in them. They were empty now though, and there was no rule about staying out of the hatching sands when they were empty. So, with a little grin, Nali turned right around and walked into the sands, letting the warm humidity given off by the natural hotspring that flowed through one side of the large cave wash over her.

She wasn't sure what she was going to do in here, but why pass up the opportunity. Even if one of the females suddenly came in to clutch, she could scramble out quickly through one of the exits, so she wasn't worried. At first, she just walked through the sands, shuffling her feet through them before taking her boots off and wiggling her toes into the warm sand. She dropped her boots to retrieve later. Anyone who took a peek into the sands or saw her walk in would now see a relatively young candidate shuffling her feet through the sands in a lazy circle for no apparent reason.

Pellist had finished his chores in the beast pens a little early and was headed back to the barracks after scrubbing himself down once. Now he smelled like animal and human sweat, instead of worse things, and one more good rinse would probably solve that. He and his clothes were slightly damp, though, and he wanted to get changed before he tried to go to the dining hall.

Passing the Hatching Sands, Pellist glanced in, almost reflexively. It seemed like he had been waiting all his life for a chance to Impress, and for some reason he had always assumed that his first Hatching would be a matter of days after he Turned twelve. However, he had made the move to the candidate barracks, and there wasn’t even a clutch of eggs on the sands, let alone a Hatching anytime soon. He still had more time to wait. He wasn’t alone in his impatience, though.

One of the other candidates was out on the sands right then. Nali was a little older than him, and had been through one Hatching already. That was a reminder that even if there had been a Hatching the day he Turned twelve, he still might be waiting. He would Impress when the right dragon broke shell, Pellist reminded himself, heading out into the sands to see if Nali wanted company.

“H’llo,” he said softly. He wasn’t sure if he was trying to be stealthy in case someone peeked in and chased them out, or if he was just in awe of the new perspective. He’d never been out here where the candidates got to stand before. It was so...empty...without any eggs. More like a theater than anything else.

“It feels weird out here, without eggs, or spectators, or anything,” he said, as he got closer to Nali. “Like it’s just….waiting….just like we are.” Waiting had always been frustrating for him, because there was nothing he could do to make time go faster. There weren’t tips and tricks to be better at waiting, you just had to suffer through it.
