Fancy Some Food? - Kate | A'ric

Despite being new, this dining hall is very similar to the one back at old Atricis, giving a familiarity to the new Weyr. It is one large, central cavern carved out from the side of the cliff with many tables of varying sizes and seat numbers. The kitchens are attached, and there is a set of stairs leading down into the lower caverns.

”Well that’s always a good thing to do. I never wanted to put myself out there or try anything until I impressed to Behemoth. After that it was like I came out of my shell or something like that.”

What did she say to something like that? Since she had Impressed so young, it was not like Solai really knew anything about sex until long after she Impressed Tyreth. Before that, all she shared was a childhood kiss with Arendian.

When Solai noted that her remark prompted a blush, she could not help but grin in response as he elaborated on his private life. The more he spoke, however, the more her grin waned, until she looked to him in dismay.

”Well, honestly it’s the first one. Actually it’s not that I want her and she doesn’t want me, she does, it’s just, she is not really the settling down type. I don’t know if that will change or not but I do have feelings for her, and she is the mother of my son. I just want to give her some time for Victors sake. Maybe she will come around and we can b an actual family. I know it probably sounds weird to you, helll it even sounds weird to me but there is just, something about her that makes me not want to give up without a fight. I know that might mean getting my heart stepped on, but I honestly think that Kit is worth it.”

Her brow even began to furrow. "Well that's hardly fair. If she really wanted you and actually cared, she'd stop messing around." If people wanted open relationships, Solai was not going to pass judgement on them, but both parties needed to consent in her opinion. Otherwise, it boiled down to one person asking the other to sacrifice without giving anything in turn. Solai would have apologised for her bluntness, but only of she had been in the wrong. "It doesn't sound weird to me, we live in a Weyr for Faranth's sake. I just, it irritates me that there are people who think just because they live in a weyr that open relationships are accepted by everyone, so they think they can do whatever the hell they want without consequence. But they never stop to consider that their actions can still hurt people, even weyrbred ones. It's just an excuse to be fucking selfish." She sat back and whirled the content of her glass, only to take a long gulp of it. "If Kit was worth it, she'd give you an answer one way or another instead of leading you on to think you stand a chance."

The name Ivryn came to mind when Solai thought about open relationships and polyamory. Several months into Solai's transfer, Ivryn had found someone else. The bluerider suggested an open relationship to Solai... only to reveal she had been treating their relationship as one ever since Solai had transferred. Ivryn attempted to shaming Solai into accepting her "nature', reminding Solai that she came from a weyr and should have been more "progressive" about her views of love and sex, but when it became quickly apparent that Solai did not play that way, Ivryn left her to enjoy her liberties back in Atricis. Devastated, Solai wondered if she might have been in the wrong. Over time, and with much inner reflection, she came to realise the Ivryns and Kits of the world only used open relationships as an excuse to cheat without consequence.

Actually, A'ric had always been interested in one thing, and that was Impressing a dragon. That was why he had left Benden and came here. Why he had left his friends and family. It had been all that was on his mind. After he had Impressed though, Behemoth had helped him open up. While A'ric would never get an ego even half the size of Behemoth's, his dragon's confidence in their team actually helped A'ric boost his own confidence as well. Even with the new found confidence though, he had never really been a ladies man. Well, he had to admit, at least what he pictured a ladies man as. Sometimes he could think of the right thing to say, and Kit seemed to think he was a good lover since she tended to just find him over and over. Other than that though, he was not the smooth talker that he knew some of the other guys around the Weyr were.

As Solai spoke those words, dark eyes looked at her, studying her for a moment. Appreciating her opinion he just smiled and kind of nodded. "I've had the same thought. I just haven't quiet figured out a way to sit down and talk to her about it. Every time I try and bring it off, I just decide it's not the right time, and keep my mouth shut." Was he ashamed to admit it? Not really, but he did know that this was not the best way to be handling it.

A'ric picked up his drink once more as the green rider spoke again. Honestly, the bronze rider was glad she didn't think this was weird. They did live in a Weyr. And not everyone was together with someone. Even if they were, especially during Flights, they were with other people, and everything always seemed to turn out just fine. Not even bothering to take a drink, he set the glass back down. "An open relationship, is probably what she wants, yes. What would make her happy. Actually, this whole thing started as just a casual thing. Turned into spending Flights together, and then we had Viktor. I know she's been hurt before, even though she never really talks about it. I just get the feeling, and I think honestly, that's why I dont bring up my feelings to her. I think that is what is stopping me."

A'ric knew that Kit still sought out other people sometimes, but it was mostly when she wanted to run or forget about her past relationships. Hell, she even did it to him sometimes. If he tried to talk to her about it, the zultanite rider always seemed to turn it into something else. Shrugging a bit he said, "You know, I understand where you are coming from, but I've seen how Kit has changed, and I can't help but feel like maybe I can make her forget whatever it was that happened if I give her enough time. Maybe I'm crazy for thinking that, but aren't I just as bad as the last person if I just walk out on her?"

Taking a drink, he looked at Solai once more and shrugged. "Sorry, I don't mean to just dump all that on you. It's probably a little awkward since we don't really know each other that I'm telling you all of this." The bronze rider did feel a bit awkward talking to openly with someone he had just met, but at the same time, he already felt like Solai was someone he could trust, and she would quickly become a friend of his. At least he hoped she would anyway.

"I've had the same thought. I just haven't quite figured out a way to sit down and talk to her about it. Every time I try and bring it off, I just decide it's not the right time, and keep my mouth shut."

"Maybe it's time to change that," Solai said without hesitation and little shame. Why should she feel guilt over saying what needed to be said, especially to a man who clearly knew what he wanted, but was too afraid to pursue it?

"An open relationship, is probably what she wants, yes. What would make her happy. Actually, this whole thing started as just a casual thing. Turned into spending Flights together, and then we had Viktor. I know she's been hurt before, even though she never really talks about it. I just get the feeling, and I think honestly, that's why I dont bring up my feelings to her. I think that is what is stopping me."

Everything he uttered only made her blood boil. If he really did not like it, then he should not have to resign himself. In protecting her, he only harmed himself. Solai could have said something along the lines of he needed to stop making excuses for this woman, but instead, she held her tongue and let him continue.

"You know, I understand where you are coming from, but I've seen how Kit has changed, and I can't help but feel like maybe I can make her forget whatever it was that happened if I give her enough time. Maybe I'm crazy for thinking that, but aren't I just as bad as the last person if I just walk out on her?"

If A'ric asked Solai to show some sympathy to this Kit, he would get none from her. There was a reason Solai never got involved with people like Kit anymore. Sure they were fun for a single night, but they were a disaster in the long run.

"Sorry, I don't mean to just dump all that on you. It's probably a little awkward since we don't really know each other that I'm telling you all of this."

"Obviously it's been on your mind for some time," Solai replied, once more without hesitation. "I can warn you all I want, tell you to dump the woman and move on... but really that's your choice to make. Just don't ask me to tell you everything is going to be okay. I've met this Kit's type before, and it never turns out well for people like you and me." Even if this Kit conceded to A'ric, it did not mean she would be faithful. "They want their tender cut, and a side of wherry and pork to go with it, but that's too much meat on the plate for my taste." For all Solai knew how to enjoy herself, she also knew how to love a single person with all her heart. Solai was bitter for the fact that Ivryn refused to do the same. For some people, one would never be enough.

A'ric couldn't help but just stare at her for a moment, before neither shaking his head or nodding. Quiet frankly, he knew what Solai said was right, and probably what he should do. Unfortunately for him, there was also a small part of him that was holding out hope that something was going to change. In his mind he knew it probably never would, but in his heart, he hoped to hell it would. Finally he brought himself out of his thoughts. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I just need to talk to her about it."

Solai's thought of him hurting himself to protect her was true, to a point. Honestly, he didn't feel hurt. Well, not like you would expect anyway. Since there were really no strings attached (for either of them), he really couldn't be mad, or upset, or anything of the like. Really, he didn't see it as hurting himself either. Quiet honestly, it wasn't like there were a lot of girls falling all over themselves to get to him. Then again, that was more likely due to the fact that he wasn't putting himself out there really, rather than Kit, or how he felt about her, holding him back.

Taking another drink, he listened to what Solai was saying. It still baffled him that the green rider was sitting here, listening to him and the two fo them didn't even know each other all that well. Swallowing the drink he had in his mouth, he nodded slowly. "On my mind, yes, but not constantly. It's just like something that pops in there for time to time, even if I don't want it to." A'ric had to fight the urge to chuckle as she compared these people wanting more than one person to be with, to wanting different kinds of meat. The bronze rider found himself agreeing with that analogy though. He understood why she used it, and it DID go along with what they were talking about.

Taking another sip, A'ric didn't say anything for the moment. It was obvious to him that something had happened to make Solai feel like that. What had happened, he didn't know, but he just felt that it had to be SOMETHING. Pressing it would probably not be in his best interest, and would probably make Solai angry with him, so he decided to just change the topic. "What Wing did you get put in? Im always curious to know about the other Wings."

At least he admitted that a talk needed to be had. That was all Solai honestly wanted to hear. As for his... appeal and virility... had he been willing and not so attached, Solai privately thought to herself, I'd hit that. Rather than say such a thing out loud, she sipped her wine instead.

It's an open relationship, according to him. You could ask if you were really that curious.

Nope, Solai licked her lips to enjoy the lingering taste of her latest sip. I don't play that game, Tyreth. If he ever finds himself unattached, then maybe we'll talk, but for now, he's as touchable as a bonded wher. Not going to happen. And that was the end of that.

"What Wing did you get put in? Im always curious to know about the other Wings."

"Dislike the subject of our conversation that much, huh?" she asked him back in a tease. She swirled the content of her glass as she let him stew with those words. Might he squirm in discomfort? Laugh it off? Get upset? He did not seem like the sort to do the last, though she partially was curious about the first. Sometimes Solai simply enjoyed making men uncomfortable, not out of retaliation, but out of a desire to educate them. However, she knew it was best to finally answer his question... only after he answered her's first.

Again, A'ric found himself letting his mind wander just a little bit, sipping his drink once more. What if there we women interested in him, but he just didn't know if because they didn't want to tell him they were interested because of him being with Kit. As much as they had tried to keep it secret, by now, pretty much everyone knew anyway. Especially now that Viktor had been born. Come to think of it, maybe none of the girls told him they were interested, because he did not act interested in them. While he knew he and Kit weren't in a relationship, there was always that feeling at the back of his mind that being with someone else would basically be cheating. Cheating was something that he knew he was not capable of, and he just couldn't bring himself to do it, even though at this point, it wouldn't really matter.

Feeling his cheeks get slightly hotter once again, Shaking his head, he chuckled softly. "Not that I dislike it. Sometimes I feel like I could talk about Kit and Viktor all day. So, I feel like most of the time I should probably change it to something else. I doubt you'd just want to hear me go on about the two of them." That hadn't gone as well as A'ric had planned. The bronze rider had actually been hoping that Solai would not really pick up on the fact that he was changing the subject. Obviously she was really paying attention, and didn't miss it.

Behemoth rolled his eyes, and A'ric could sense that the bronze was thinking he was being quiet the idiot. Behemoth always had to put his own two cents in, even if A'ric really didn't need or appreciate it. Shrugging it off he turned back to Solai, waiting for the green rider's answer about her Wing, if she wanted to that was.

The flush of his cheeks was cute, not that Solai would say anything about it. Even she knew her manners well enough not to point out a stranger's blush. Had she known him as a friend, however, she would have been merciless with the man.

"Not that I dislike it. Sometimes I feel like I could talk about Kit and Viktor all day. So, I feel like most of the time I should probably change it to something else. I doubt you'd just want to hear me go on about the two of them."

"Uh-huh," she teased him in turn. The greenrider could be such a feline sometimes. But what could she say, she liked playing with her food... not that A'ric was food to her, or at least not the kind she would eat. She had thought her reasons to Tyreth earlier, and would stick by her decision. Still, she liked to play, and she liked to flirt, and A'ric made it far too easy. Rather than speak, she let the man stew, and instead ate her little bits of food... and cut another piece of meat for Scarletto who patiently awaited the next little bite she offered. Tiny talons plucked the morsel off the fork. With food now secured between his claws, he turned away to gnaw away at the tender cut.

Solai watched A'ric all the while, letting him stew in anticipation of whether she would answer his question, or ask another one of her own. The tip of her fork poked a crisp tuber, her knife slipping down to half the vegetable. She readied the bite, only to look at A'ric with a smirk, if not the slightest hint of laughter, "They placed me into Shooting Star."

And with that, she finally slipped the roasted tuber into her mouth in satisfaction.

Raising his glass once more, and for a moment, he almost just downed the rest of the glass, but then remembered his manners and just took a sip. A'ric had never really been one to drink very much. Actually, two glasses was quiet a bit for him. Usually he only had more than one when he was with Oly or K'rios, just letting loose.

After he finished his sip, he laughed softly and just shook his head. Of course he knew she was teasing, and he wasn't exactly sure what he should say or anything. Honestly he probably should say something, but he was never really one for teasing. Sometimes he did, but, not usually. "What, you don't believe me?" Of course he said it with the same teasing tone in his voice. Other than that, he wasn't exactly sure what else to say at the moment.

Smiling softly he said, "That's a good Wing to be in. I guess technically all the Wings are good. I'm just biased to Silver Dusk. Of course, I would be, seeing as how Im the Wingleader of it." He wasn't saying that to be conceited or anything, it was more of just stating a fact, especially since Solai had just come back. She might not know exactly who ran the Wings and what not now.

"Do you like your Wingmates so far and everything?"

"What, you don't believe me?"

She had answered him with a playful shrug, though she gave no other indication as she let him squirm. Or did he enjoy the little silent game had between them?

Though he stuffed his face from his perch, the thought of games drew her fancy flit's attention. Game? Scarletto's tails waggled at the possibility, until Solai calmed him with a single thought. No games. He settled once more for his meat, chopping away at the rare cooked cut.

When she did finally answer, he was quick to praise her choice. "That's a good Wing to be in. I guess technically all the Wings are good. I'm just biased to Silver Dusk. Of course, I would be, seeing as how Im the Wingleader of it."

"Of course you are," she chuckled back. If she had been a Wingleader, she probably would have shown bais for her own prowess as well. There was nothing quite so uplifting as thinking you were the best.

"Do you like your Wingmates so far and everything?"

"I haven't really met them," Solai answered honestly. She swirled her wine glass once more, and tipped it back for a small sip. However, where she anticipated a sip of wine, instead Solai found there was none to be had. Her glass was empty. The dried cup earned a scowl of disapproval from the greenrider before she set it aside, and returned to the conversation. Water would have to suffice. "I only just arrived, and I managed to meet my Wingleader, Ay'li, but I'll meet the others tomorrow." After a sip of freshly poured room temperature water, she continued. "Ay'li seems amazing, and I do look forward to flying with her." It also inspired Solai, simply for the fact Ay'li was a woman, for female leadership was a rare commodity on Pern, especially outside of Walled.

For a few moments, A'ric couldn't help but just stare at her. This game, if you wanted to call it a game, was something he had not done in quiet some time. Sure, he and Kit played around like this sometimes, but they were together. Or, as together as they were probably ever going to be anyway. Apparently, he had just never noticed that he didn't do this anymore. Solai seemed interested in the games, but at the same time, from what she had already told him, the bronze rider knew that she was basically just messing with him. Probably just seeing how much she could get him to blush, or something like that.

Had that come out the wrong way? For all of a moment, the bronze rider worried that he might have sounded very conceited. Sure, he was biased because he was the Wingleader. That didn't mean he thought he was the best Wingleader in the Wyer or anything like that. Solai's chuckle put his mind at ease, and he just gave her a grin.

Surprise showed on the young man's face. For some reason, he had figured she had been here for at least a sevenday. Well, if he had known she had only just gotten here, he wouldn't have asked such a ridiculous question. As she poured her water, he quickly thought back. Had she said earlier that she had only just gotten here? Maybe he was just overthinking things. Smiling he said, "Well if you had to meet one person from your Wing, the Wingleader would be the best one."

"Hopefully when you meet the rest of your Wing, you like them just as much as you like Ay'li." Taking another drink he said in a teasing voice, "If you don't you can always transfer to my Wing if they will let you."
