I. Introduction
Welcome to Atricis: Awakening’s Character Creation Guidlines and Tips. To make this as easy as possible, just about everything you need to know about character creation is right here on this page. We will try to keep things as brief and concise as possible so as not to bore you and so you can get to creating your character(s) as quickly as possible. We hope this page proves helpful and easy to read so that you can have fun creating your character and writing here on Atricis as soon as you are ready!

Some Basics
  • Atricis no longer has a post based character limit. All character slots are now purchased from the Site Store using Marks from our site’s currency system.
    • However, the first four characters are freebies! So when you are starting out, you will have four free character slots available to you that you do not have to purchase. Any characters after those first four, however, do need to be purchased.
  • Do not post until your profile has been approved. When a profile is approved, the Approval Stamp will be placed at the top of the profile by a staff member and moved into the proper forum.
    • If something needs to be discussed before approval can happen, a staff member will contact you via PM.
    • Character profiles are looked over regularly, though it may take a few days sometimes. We do try to look over and approve characters quickly, so if several days have passed without approval or a PM, you may contact a staff member to ask about it.
  • Atricis does not accept characters taken from another person's work This includes characters from tv, books, media, or another RPers character.
    • However, it is acceptable to have a character loosely based on a character from another work.
  • If interested in adopting a character or dragonkin, please read the guidelines on adopting a character in the Adoptables Subforum.
  • We strongly urge players link their characters in their signatures (you can access this by going into the "My Controls" link near the top of the page).
    • You aren't required to use color codes or graphics in your signature, all we ask is for all your character profiles to be linked in your signature. This is so others, and yourself, can easily see which characters you play and get to their profiles easily.
  • If you have any questions, please feel free to ask a staff member.

II. Character Guidelines
To make the character creation guidelines easy to look through, we have the guidelines separated into different sections by character type. That way, if you're only looking to create a candidate for now, you may look at the candidate creation guidelines and read the other guidelines later on. We do suggest reading the General Guidelines below first and then moving on to read the specific character creation guideline sections below that. There is also a current Creation Availability list beyond the guidelines.

General Guidelines
  • Please follow the profile template and fill it out as directed.
More details about how to fill out the template can be found right above the profile template codes.
  • We do ask for you to write at least a few complete and descriptive sentences for applicable sections for your character’s profile.
More details about how much we want for profiles can be found in the profile template codes.
  • Some types of characters require special tokens or slots for creation due to rarity.
Some types of rare characters include: Female Brownriders, Uncanon Riders and Handlers, pretigious bloodlines, rogues, among others. These tokens and slots can be found in the Site Store for purchase.
  • Please consider our site’s canon and history.
While we don’t expect you to be well versed in all of this right at the start, we do want to see some reading and consideration made. There is a lot to go through because of our site’s age, so we have tried to keep it as easy to go through as possible. We do suggest takig a quick look at least at the most recent turns of history to see how events might affect you character’s bio.
Candidate Guidelines
    ALL Candidates
    • Candidates of all sorts are always available for creation.
    • Profile titles for Candidates should read: Name | Dragonkintype Candidate | Gender example: Alexis | Dragon Candidate | Female
    • Due to our hatchings happening so infrequently, there is no limit on number of candidates per hatching, nor is there a limit on how many characters per player might bond/Impress. However, it isn’t uncommon for only one or two of a player’s candidates to Impress at the same hatching.
    • Character personality is the second biggest factor, the first being player activity, when deciding on Impressions/bonds. So please give Candidate characters plenty of care and attention onto their personalities.
    • Candidate Impressions are decided dominantly on activity of the player with their character. A character with no or very little activity before the hatching will likely not Impress.
    • Useful reading in our information includes Candidacy in New Atricis Weyr.
    Dragon Candidates
    • Ages are between 12 and 22 turns of age regardless of gender.
    • Candidates can choose to take an honorific or not regardless of gender. However, there is still a lot of IC expectation for male candidates to take honorifics.
    • Candidates wishing to take on an honorofic should have their preferred honorific included in their profile.
    • Non-Weyrfolk can be Searched out by a dragon and rider pair. Weyr children are also given the privelege of standing if they desire without a Search. Non-Weyr children not Searched can also petition the Leadership and Candidatemaster to become a candidate. On rare occasion an individual may be invited into candidacy by Leadership or the Candidatemaster.
    Wher Candidates
    • There is an age minimum of 15 turns to be a Wher Candidate. There is no age maximum.
    • Wher candidates do not take on honorifics when they bond to a wher.
    • Most Wher candidates by petitioning the Wher Leadership and Candidatemaster to become a candidate. Some, however, are Searched out by a wher with the rare Keen Searcher ability. On occasion an individual may be invited into candidacy by Wher Leadership or the Candidatemaster.
    Daywher Candidates
    • There is an age minimum of 12 turns of age. There is no age maximum.
    • Daywher candidates do not take on honorifics when they bond to a daywher.
    • Most become Daywher Candidates by petitioning the Daywher Leaders and Candidatemaster. On occasion an individual may be invited into candidacy by Leadership or the Candidatemaster. A few, however, are Searched out by a daywher with the rare Keen Searcher ability.
    Pearl Candidates
    • There is an age minimum of 12 turns of age. There is no age maximum.
    • Pearl candidates take on a type of honorific unique to Pearlriders: Pearls will add -vas, -vis, or -vos to their rider's name (vas for female, vis for male, vos for nonbinary if preferred)
    • Pearl candidates are taught swimming during candidacy. Individuals who have water or ocean phobias are relieved from candidacy. Individuals who, for whatever reason, are unable to swim or learn to swim are relieved from candidacy.
    • Most become Daywher Candidates by petitioning the Pearl Leaders and Candidatemaster. On occasion an individual may be invited into candidacy by Leadership or the Candidatemaster. A few, however, are Searched out by a Pearl with the rare Keen Searcher ability.

Dragonrider Guidelines
  • Rider profiles are posted first, with the Dragon profile posted as a reply to the Rider’s profile.
  • Profile titles for Dragonriders should read: Name | Colorrider | Gender example: Alexis | Greenrider | Female
  • Thanks to the influence of the Southerners, both Dragonriders can choose if they want an honorific or not, regardless of gender. However, there is still an IC expectation for male dragonriders to take on an honorific, so it is still very common among male riders.
  • Dragon sport colors or mutations are not allowed without proper tokens or staff permission.
  • Dragonriders are assigned a Threadfighting Wing by a staff member upon approval.
  • For Clutching Riders, players of a clutching pair are expected to be fairly active in a consistent basis in order to be able to post up Flights, Clutchings, and Hatching starts, as well as for any Plots that might need the involvement of the high ranking Queenriders and Jr. Queenriders.

  • Profile titles for Wherhandlers should read: Name | Colorhandler | Gender example: Alexis | Greenhandler | Female
  • Wherhandlers do not take honorifics.
  • Please read Isilian Wher info page as our whers have some unique info to them on Atricis that may be different from how other sites handle whers.
  • Wher sport colors or mutations are not allowed without proper tokens or staff permission.
  • Wherhandlers are assigned a Wherhandler Team by a staff member upon approval, based on their skills. (for example: a regular Wherhandler would go to the Patrol Team and a Wherhandler with Healer training would go to the Healer Team)
  • Isilian Whers either come from New Atricis Weyr, or Crom Hold currently (or the past Isil Tunnelhold) due to past Wher Leadership wishing to protect Isilian Whers and their bloodlines.
  • Wild Bonds need a Wild Bond token from the Site Store.
  • For Clutching Handlers, players of a clutching pair are expected to be fairly active in a consistent basis in order to be able to post up Runs, Clutchings, and Hatching starts, as well as for any Plots that might need their involvement.

  • Handler profiles are posted first, with the Wher profile posted as a reply to the Handler’s profile.
  • Profile titles for Dayhandlers should read: Name | Colorhandler | Gender example: Alexis | Greenhandler | Female

  • Daywher sport colors or mutations are not allowed without proper tokens or staff permission.

Pearlrider Guidelines
  • Currently, due to the rarity and how new they are, Pearlriders cannot be created, and can only be gained through adopting an available Adoptable, or through Impression at a hatching. This will likely change when the Pearlriders become more established in the future.
Crafter Guidelines
  • Northern Crafts are as follows on the The North Info, please be sure to read when creating a Northern Crafter.
  • Southern Crafts are as follows on the The South Info, with some things from the North craft system applying unless otherwise stated. Please be sure to read when creating a Southern Crafter.
  • Apprentice ages are between 10 to 17 turns of age - with the most starting on average at 12 turns of age.
  • Journeyman ages are usually between 18 to 30 turns of age - with most gaining Journeyman rank at 18 turns of age.
  • Master ages are usually 30+ turns of age, with only a handful of crafters ever gaining Master rank.
  • Craft Masters are those considered the very top of their field, and usually run the Craft Halls. There are usually only one to two Craft Masters in each Craft. (Northern only since Southern crafts are tied to families rather than a communal Crafthall, so Craft Masters are not needed in places like Walled Hold.)
  • Without proper Character Abilities, Dragonriders cannot become Masters of their craft due to the dedication and time it takes to achieve this rank.
  • Wherhandlers and Dayhandlers may possibly gain their Master knots in a craft, but a staff member should be asked about this first.
  • Crafter Availabilities
    • Apprentice Crafters - Always available
    • Journeyman Crafters - Always available
    • Master Crafters - Only available with staff permission (due to rarity)

Weyrfolk, Holdfolk, & Holdless
  • Weyrfolk are the non-Dragonriders/Wherhandlers/Dayhandlers/Crafters of a Weyr. They do many things to help keep the Weyr running smoothly.
  • The lowest position of Weyrfolk is Drudge, with these people most often being people with disabilities that keep them from things such as a Craft or Candidacy. They may also be those assigned the position as long term punishment.
  • Weyrfolk as a term tends to refer to everyone who is not a Drudge, Rider, Handler, or Crafter. Weyrfolk includes kitchen workers, creche workers, and various other jobs and workers around the Weyr.
  • Holdfolk refers to the people who live in the Holds of Pern who are not the Lord Holder and his family. They are anyone who is not a Drudge or a Crafter within a Hold.
  • Holdless refers to people who live outside of the Holds and Weyrs and Crafthalls of Pern.
  • Most Holdless people are groups of trader caravans and the occasional performance caravans.
  • Holdless people living entirely on their own are very rare and usually require strong survival skills to make it.
  • All Weyrfolk are always available for creation.
  • All Holdfolk are always available for creation. (Holder families require Bloodline token)
  • Holdless are usually available for creation, though some may require Survivor token, Rogue token, or other tokens, depending on the type of “Holdless” they are/were.

Unbonded Major Dragonkin
  • Unbonded Dragonkin profiles are posted by themselves due to having no bonded.
  • Profile titles for Unbonded Dragonkin should read: Name | Species | Color example: Alethia | Daywher | Green
  • Due to the nature of their bonding, Whers, Daywhers, and Pearls can live without bonding.
  • Dragons cannot be made unbonded due to being dependent on their bond with their rider entirely.
  • Whers and Daywhers that show themselves capable of working among the Handler Team groups well are able to actively work in their teams even while unbonded.
  • Even unbonded Pearls will almost always work for their glint regardless, and will be assigned to Strike Groups.
  • Please note that unbonded dragonkin characters may have less threading opportunities.
  • While most unbonded dragonkin have the IC potential to bond at any time, unbonded dragonkin characters cannot bond to another player’s character due to the potential issues that could arise from this.
  • However, the player of an unbonded dragonkin character may choose to bond their dragonkin to one of their own characters, or create a character to bond them to at any time. An additional Non-Bonded Character slot would be needed in this case though.

Pet Guidelines
  • The limit on pets per human character is Four Pets.
  • Abilities may be purchased for a character to increase this limit.
  • Dragons, Whers, and Day Whers can bond to one 'lizard pet.
  • An ability may be purchased for a major dragonkin character to increase this limit.
  • Canines can be created with character creation.
  • Most other pets can only be obtained through events, special markets, or the Site Store.
  • Exotic pets (those not traditionally considered pets like canines or firelizards) can be obtained with the use of a purchased token.

Adoptable Guidelines
  • Please see the Adoptables Subforum for Guidelines and currently available adoptables.
  • Available adoptables are not included in the above Availability lists.

III. Profile Templates

About Our Human Character Template
  • Please use our base template supplied below
  • Our template uses Categories to better organize types of information. Please do not change these categories or rearrange them. (You may add colors to them if desired, so long as they stay where originally placed)
  • Our template also makes use of spoiler tags to shorten longer profiles. Spoiler tags are optional and may be removed, however, please do use spoiler tags under categories if a category starts to get long.
  • When filling out the template, please leave everything under the Basic Info category as is.
  • You may add customization to profiles with color codes, some images, and adding sections under categories. (Except for adding sections under the Basics category)
  • You may remove sections not applicable to your character. (examples: Standing Number for a non-Candidate, Threadfighting Wing for a Crafter, etc.)
  • Profiles should be titled: Charactername | Rank | Gender example: Alexis | Greenrider | Female
  • Play-bys are a common use on Atricis, but they are not a requirement. For those wishing to use play-bys, you can find a complete list of currently used PBs here.
  • For Dragon Candidates and Pearl Candidates, please include a preferred honorific in italics under “Name” if an honorific is needed/desired.
  • Please include the Turn of Birth for a character under their Age.
  • ”Origin” refers where your character was born and/or where they came from before coming to Atricis.
  • ”Abilities” refers to any abilities purchased from the Site Store.
  • When filling out Appearance, you may use “quick” description lists of their basic traits, but still include at least several complete, descriptive sentences about your character. We’d like to see one to two paragraphs worth of description.
  • Given that Personality is very important for the Staff when bonding a character, we ask that a “rule of three” be considered when filling out the Personality. This means at least three personality traits, with three sentences on each trait, or three paragraphs with at least three sentences in each paragraph
  • When filling out Biography, please include Turn numbers of when events happened in your character’s history, as it makes it much easier to keep track of when things happened to your character and how old they were. You can find our site’s turn numbers in the Atricis History.

About Our Dragonkin Character Template
  • Major Dragonkin (Dragons, Whers, etc.) have their profiles posted as a reply to their Rider’s/Handler’s profile thread so that both profiles are in the same thread.
  • Unbonded Major Dragonkin can have their profiles posted separately due to not having a bonded.
  • Please add a History section at the bottom of a profile for an Unbonded Major Dragonkin character. (History is not necessary for bonded Dragonkin due to sharing their bonded’s history).
  • Dragonkin profiles can be edited to visually resemble the human profile a little more if desired, just please keep the sections in the default profile present and in the relatively same layout/order.
